Bernardo, 58, was handed the life sentence for kidnapping, torturing and killing two schoolgirls - Leslie Mahaffy, 14, and Kristen French, 15. He was also found guilty of the manslaughter and rape of his sister-in-law, 15-year-old Tammy Homolka.

It is unclear why the Correctional Service of Canada (CSC) decided to transfer Bernardo from Millhaven Institution, a maximum-security prison in Ontario, to La Macaza Institution, a medium-security-prison in Quebec.

The federal agency released a statement on Monday acknowledging the crimes as horrific, but failed to outline the reasons for the transfer.

"We are restricted by law in what we can divulge about an offender's case," the statement said.

"We regret any pain and concern this has caused."

The decision was met with intense backlash from many Canadians.

"(Bernardo) should rot in a maximum-security prison for the rest of his miserable existence," said Ontario Premier Doug Ford in a statement.

Public Safety Minister Marco Mendicino told the Globe and Mail that he was "profoundly concerned and shocked by this decision", and said he had expressed that to the federal corrections commissioner.

Bernardo was aided in his crimes by his wife Karla Homolka during the 90s. The media dubbed the duo the "Ken & Barbie killers" because of their looks.

Between 1987-1992, Bernardo raped or sexually assaulted at least 18 women, and killed three others, according to Ontario's Ministry of the Attorney General.

The CSC has emphasised that Bernardo remains incarcerated in a secure and controlled institution, and is taking the necessary precautions to protect public security.

Charles Starkweather And Caril Ann Fugate



Oliver Stone's Natural Born Killers (1994) starring Woody Harrelson and Juliette Lewis as two young, attractive serial killers who engage in a killing spree was inspired by the crimes of real-life teenage serial killers; 19-year-old Charles Starkweather and 14-year-old Caril Ann Fugate. In the 1950s, they murdered 11 people in Nebraska and Wyoming over the period of just two months.





Things didn't work out between them and they were arrested when a Deputy Sheriff found the pair wrestling by the side of a road. Fugate ran towards him for help and screamed, "He's going to kill me!" Later at the station, it all became clear who the Sheriff had actually arrested. Aged just 20-years-old Starkweather was executed, he told his father, "If I want to make my atonement with God and be electrocuted, that’s my business." Fugate now lives in Michigan with a new identity.

Ray and Faye Copeland lust for killing came with their retirement years. Why this couple, both in their 70s, went from being loving grandparents to serial killers, who used the clothing of their victims to make winter quilts to snuggle under, is both morbid and perplexing. Here is their story.


Ray Copeland
Born in Oklahoma in 1914, Ray Copeland's family never spent much time in the same place. When he was a child, his family was constantly moving, on the hunt for employment. The situation worsened during the Depression, and Copeland dropped out of school and began scrounging for money.

Not satisfied with earning meager wages, he got involved in scamming people out of property and money. In 1939 Copeland was found guilty of stealing livestock and check forgery. He was sentenced to a year in jail.

Faye Wilson Copeland
Copeland met Faye Wilson not long after he was released from jail in 1940. They had a brief courtship, then married and began having children one after another. With several additional mouths to feed, Copeland quickly returned to stealing from livestock ranchers. While this may have been his chosen profession, he wasn't very good at it. He was constantly getting arrested and did several stints in jail.

His scam was not very slick. He would buy cattle at auctions, write fraudulent checks, sell the cattle and try to leave town before the auctioneers were informed that the checks were bad. If he failed to leave town in time, he would promise to make the checks good, but never follow through,

In time, he was banned from buying and selling livestock. He needed a scam that would allow him to operate despite the ban, one that he could profit from, and that the police could not trace back to him. It took him 40 years to think one up.


Copeland began hiring vagrants and drifters to work on his farm. He set up checking accounts for them, then sent them to buy livestock with bad checks from their accounts. Copeland then sold the livestock and the drifters would be fired and sent on their way. This kept the police off his back for awhile, but in time he was caught and returned to jail. When he got out, he went back to the same scam, but this time he made sure the hired help would never be caught, or even heard from again.

The Copeland Investigation
In October 1989, Missouri police received a tip that a human skull and bones could be found on farmland owned by an elderly couple, Ray and Faye Copeland. Ray Copeland's last known stint with the law involved a livestock scam, so as police questioned Ray inside his farmhouse about the scam, authorities searched the property. It did not take them long to find five decomposing bodies buried in shallow graves around the farm.

The autopsy report determined that each man had been shot in the back of the head at close range. A register, with names of the transient farmhands who had worked for the Copelands, helped police identify the bodies. Twelve of the names, including the five victims found, had a crude 'X' in Faye's handwriting, marked next to each name.

More Disturbing Evidence.

Authorities found a .22-calibre Marlin bolt-action rifle inside the Copeland home, which ballistics tests proved to be the same weapon as the one used in the murders. The most disturbing piece of evidence, besides the scattered bones and rifle, was a handmade quilt Faye Copeland made out of the dead victim's clothing. The Copeland's were quickly charged with five murders, identified as Paul Jason Cowart, John W Freeman, Jimmie Dale Harvey, Wayne Warner and Dennis Murphy.


Faye Insisted Knowing Nothing About Murders.

Faye Copeland claimed to know nothing about the murders and stuck to her story even after being offered a deal to change her murder charges to conspiracy to commit murder in exchange for information about the remaining seven missing men listed in her register. Although a conspiracy charge would have meant her spending less than a year in prison, compared to the possibility of receiving the death sentence, Faye continued to insist she knew nothing about the murders.

Ray Attempts an Insanity Plea.

Ray first tried to plead insanity, but eventually gave up and tried to work out a plea agreement with prosecutors. The authorities were not willing to go along and the first-degree murder charges remained intact.

During Faye Copeland's trial, her attorney tried to prove that Faye was another one of Ray's victims and that she suffered from Battered Women Syndrome. There was little doubt that Faye had indeed been a battered wife, but that not was enough for the jury to excuse her cold murderous actions. The jury found Faye Copeland guilty of murder and she was sentenced to death by lethal injection. Soon after, Ray was also found guilty and sentenced to death.

The Oldest Couple Sentenced to Death.

The Copelands made their mark in history for being the oldest couple to be sentenced to death, however, neither were executed. Ray died in 1993 on death row. Faye's sentence was commuted to life in prison. In 2002 Faye was compassionate release from prison because of her declining health and she died in a nursing home in December 2003, at age 83.

Inessa Tarverdiyeva And Roman Podkopaev



Russian housekeeper Inessa Tarverdiyeva was just an "ordinary mother" before she turned to murder alongside her husband, Roman Podkopaev. They started their murder sprees in 1998 and took the lives of at least 30 people during their six-year reign of terror. They also allowed their two daughters, 25-year-old Viktoria Tarverdiyeva and 13-year-old daughter Anastasiya, to play an active role in the crimes.

The family would target wealthy families, breaking into their homes and robbing them before stabbing them to death. The father of the family died during a shootout with the police, the mother and daughter are now behind bars serving their sentences. Russian detectives said, "They looked like a totally good, nice family. Imagine them - a mother, a father, and two children. I am sure that when they were together one could hardly imagine that they could even plan a crime."

Gwendolyn Graham And Catherine May Wood



In the latest series of American Horror Story: Roanoke, two nurses were murdering patients according to the letter of their first name so they could spell out "MURDER." The characters were based on real-life nurses Gwendolyn Graham and Catherine May Wood from Grand Rapids, Michigan, who fell in love with each other and turned to murder for thrills.
In 1987, they killed five patients aged between 65 to 97 years old and managed to spell "MURDE." They were finally caught when Wood confessed to her ex-husband what she and Graham were up to. Later, Wood revealed that she confessed because they had been transferred to a different hospital and she was worried the crimes would continue but this time involving children. Wood received twenty years behind bars and Graham was handed life imprisonment.

Michael And Susan Carson



The "San Francisco Witch Killers" Michael and Susan Carson took the lives of three victims between 1982 and 1983 in Northern California and the San Francisco Bay Area - although the actual victim count is believed to be much higher. The couple, which were both heavy drug users, murdered those who they believed had "evil energy" and described themselves as "vegetarian Muslim warriors" who were trying to rid the world of "witchcraft.

Their first victim was their roommate Keryn Barnes who was killed because they believed she "was draining Miss Carson of her health and yogic powers." Barnes was beaten over the head with a frying pan and then stabbed. Once detectives caught up with the delusional couple, they were both sentenced to 75 years behind bars

David and Catherine Birnie


David and Catherine Birnie became known as Australia's worst serial killer couple following a four-week killing spree that claimed the lives of four victims. The couple would pick up teenage girls then take them back to their home. One of their intended victims was 17-year-old Kate Moir, she had been abducted by the pair but was able to escape through a bathroom window.

Kate's recollection of her ordeal was haunting, as the serial killer's would refer to the attacks as "munchines." Kate recalled, "I remember hearing, 'Have you got the munchies?' David was the puppet, Catherine was the puppeteer. She gave the tick of approval. She would say ‘I’ve got the munchies’, which meant ‘you can have this one’. You know you’re gonna die but you don’t acknowledge that to yourself, you just live it." Both of them were sentenced to life imprisonment

Charlene and Gerald Gallego were two twisted serial killers who terrorized the Sacramento, California, area between 1978 and 1980. Most of their ten victims were teenagers, who they kept as slaves before killing them. The skeletal remains of their victims were later found scattered around the area. They were caught when a passerby witnessed one of their abductions


Following their arrest, Charlene turned against Gerlad and she was offered a plea deal where she would only have to serve 16 years in prison. During an interview, she said, "There were victims who died, and there were victims who lived. It's taken me a hell of a long time to realize that I'm one of the ones who lived." She also claimed that she "tried to save some of their lives." Gerlad died on death row in 2002.

The Lonely hearts Killers

In the 1940s, "The Lonely Hearts Killers" Raymond Fernandez and Martha Beck would place adverts in the local newspaper and lure their victims with lonely-hearts letters. They loved each other unconditionally but their sinister side took the lives of more than 20 victims - although the actual victim count is unknown. They buried the bodies of the victims in the basement of their home.



They were arrested when witnesses claimed many of the victims were last seen with the couple. Before he was sent to the electric chair, Fernandez cried out, "I wanna shout it out; I love Martha! What do the public know about love?" Beck said, "My story is a love story. But only those tortured by love can know what I mean. I am not unfeeling, stupid or moronic. I am a woman who had a great love and always will have it. Imprisonment in the Death House has only strengthened my feeling for Raymond." They were actually one of a kind !

Carol M. Bundy and Doug Clark

In the 1980s, Carol M. Bundy and Doug Clark became known as "The Sunset Strip Killers" following their sexually charged killing spree around the Los Angeles. Their relationship was temperamental from the start, they met in a bar and Clark introduced himself to Bundy as the "king of one-night stands." When they had begun living together, they discovered they both shared very dark fantasies.



The pair murdered sex workers and would take parts of the body home as sickening trophies. On another occasion, Bundy tempted a country singer named Jack Murray to the back of a van on the promise of sex, but here she decapitated him instead. They were finally caught when Bundy suffered a nervous breakdown and confessed all her crimes to colleagues - they were both sentenced to life behind bars

Alton Coleman and Debra Brown





Starting in 1984, Alton Coleman and Debra Brown left eight people dead between six different states during their two-year killing spree. Coleman ruled over Brown, he was dominant and threatening - their relationship was compared to a master and slave scenario.


Their first three victims were under the age of 9-years-old, later they moved on to older couples, attacking them with a lead pipe. All of their victims they befriended, earning their trust before killing them in cold blood. They were finally caught when one victim survived a brutal attack and described the couple to the police. Coleman was executed in 2002 and Brown will live the rest of her days behind bars.

David Parker Ray & Cindy Hendy


David Parker Ray is more famously known as the Toy-Box Killer. The “toy-box” was the name given to Ray’s soundproofed semi-trailer, which is where he would take his kidnapped victims. Ray would hold them there for several months and do unspeakable things. It was never proven that Ray committed homicide, but he is suspected of killing up to sixty women. Ray was aided by a girlfriend named Cindy Hendy, whom he met at a state park. Hendy helped Ray pick and kidnap his victims and would occasionally participate further. Hendy was eventually sentenced to over thirty years in prison but was released early in 2019. Ray died of a heart attack in 2002.

Nathan Leopold & Richard Loeb


These two University of Chicago students wished to prove their incredible intelligence and commit the perfect crime. So they decided to kidnap and kill one Bobby Franks. Franks was actually related to Loeb, being his second cousin. They enacted their plan on May 21, 1924, grabbing Franks and killing him. Despite planning for seven months, their supposedly perfect crime fell apart almost instantly, and they confessed just a week later. While the nature of their relationship is somewhat ambiguous, it is strongly suggested that Leopold and Loeb shared at least a brief sexual relationship.

That is not all. The sexual and racial judicial discrimination is a running theme in these series of gory events where in addition to what you observed, the execution of Alton, the black man, was punctual unlike the seemingly delayed execution of the majority of the white folks who they gave unjust room of existence allowing nature to take its course on them. In other words, they died peacefully for the bloodcurdling murders they carried out.
