Tafawa belewa is one person you might not like but you find it hard to hate him.
I think those who shot him and threw his corpse in a bush must have hated him enough. What say you?

Agreed. Budget=allocated figure to spend. That's semantics or grammar.

Now lets get to the main issue. Show me how the budget figures that were posted by Eko ole translate into money for development?

If yoruba will neva learn how to call or pronounce IGBO, then we'll keep callg them Yoruba/YOROBO.

up till now the worst cowards of nigerian tribes are the Yoruba tribe - they will do anytg/everytg to  betray their own; like awolowo like all Yoruba people,

It's awolowo's selfish decisn that has brot naija to its knees up till this moment - a typical Yoruba man is a bitch of a traitor!

In epitome, it's insult to people like Francis Fajuyi, to even think awolowo as a leader of that race!  May awo roll restlessly in his grave!

Ojukwu really surmised awo as the 'best president nigeria neva had'  and b4 they knew actually what he meant, they had sung Oj's praises to the hi heaven.

It means - 'he is a butterfly that thinks itself as a bird', it also means 'u may think u're good, but really, u'ain't good enof to be a leader'

Akanbi_edu:

He wasn't humble enough.
An average Yoruba politician at that time was arrogant. They believe their region is develop. This is not newsthough.

M M M:

op  ask your dad
My father might not be objective
Diligence:

As a min of finance, he stole what wld mk obj/abacha saints; awolowo owns a number of skyscrappers @ marina/broad streets in lagos.
They knew he's educated, but morally bankrupt and he wld steal much more than the military guz; they cldn't trust him wt the State's treasury!  Who cld?
He also exploited his position as min of finance to get certain shareholding agreement, such that for every bottle of coke u drink, he/his family enjoys certain percentage of interest,
You are disillusioned. Moral bankruptcy of Awo has never been raised. There was never a time that there was such assertion. Stop brewing falsehood.

Kakatazz:

I also agree that the East didn't like him because of his role in the Civil war( for those who don't know The great Awo advised the FG to cut some major supplies to the East during the war because he felt there was no point fighting a region and still supplying them e.g Salt, as this would cripple them).
If according to your theory, the East votes were based on the roles Awo play in the starvation politics, how do you think the East feel about the region (North under Gowon) that commanded the troops to war? If the East could feel bad over starvation, i suppose they should be mad about the person that commanded the soldiers.

logica:

The "powers that be" always prefer puppets, and Awolowo was nobody's puppet.
This is one reason, another reason was that, the military guys were afraid of being probed. Hence the decision to rig the election in favour of a puppet.
Every seems to like a successor he can always control and or manipulate. Obasanjo and Yar'adua.

Hilundi:

Cheif Awolowo could never have won the 1979 election because he is a core Tribalist and it was pay back time for him for his infamous role of trying to keep the Igbo people down which he and his kingsmen can never ever succeed. How on earth would he have thought of been the Nigerian president at least he once asserted that "Nigeria is a mere geographical expression" yet he wanted to be president ! President koo, gomina nee.
Was there any Nigerian leader at that time that wasnt a tribalist? And yes, he was first a Yoruba man and second a Nigerian but same applied to every single Nigerian of the period: Shagari was first a Fulani and second a Nigerian so that point is nullified. Zik was first an Ibo and then a Nigerian. He even agreed that we are different but his theory was "lets forget our differences and forge ahead" Did he then not see himself as an Ibo?
To those who care to learn, the reason why Obafemi Sunday Awolowo lost the election was not because he was a tribalist.

adamaw2tuf:

the reason awo lost was that he tought it was right to rob peter to pay paul,(1)meaning that as long as he had shown how much he didnt give a damn about the easterners and that will be enough for the north/north central to reward him with the presdency in a gold plate.
Am sure you dont know what you are talking about or if you do, you are deliberately misinformed. Awolowo never shown any hatred of any sort to the easterners. There was never a time in the course of the election that he portrayed the character you described above.

For those that believe that Awo was a tribal jingoist and ethnocentric, I wouldnt blame you much esp if you are not from the South West. Among the Yorubas, there is an adage that says "ILE LA N WO, KA TO SOMO LORUKO".
In essence, it could be deduced to mean that you can never amount to anything until you you have a good home record. Home base support was very necessary and crucial to Yoruba politicians of that time.

@ answer,

Yes o, as the whole bedrock of the nation was founded on mediocrity.

Yet when we expect and wonder why the country is regressing rather than progress inspite of our natural and human endowments.

Only a fool does the same thing but expect a different outcome each time.

SIX LEADERS OF BLACK AFRICA by Time Magazine US

Chief Obafemi Awolowo, 49, of the powerful Yoruba tribe, dedicated, teetotaling Prime Minister of the Western Region of Nigeria who began as a barrister, has gradually emerged as a statesman of integrity in a land where charges of corruption are the political order of the day. His fellow Prime Minister to the more populous but primitive north, the Sardauna of Sokoto, is a haughty Moslem nobleman out of another century. Nigeria's other regional Prime Minister, the demagogic, U.S.-educated Nnamdi ["Zik"] Azikiwe of the Ibo tribe to the east, lives under a cloud as a result of a financial scandal in his administration. So rent by divisions (250 tribes speaking 400 languages), Nigeria has a compromise federal Prime Minister, Abubakar Balewa, a northerner. "To many of us," says Awolowo, "Britain is our second home. We have thrown no stones, fired no shot, and we have not shed a drop of British blood. We are attaining independence by peaceful, orderly and democratic methods."

Re: Why Did Awo Lose The 1979 Election? by BiafranFirstSon(m): 8:00pm On Oct 14, 2011
Awo lost because the only people that supported him were from the west. The northers from origin do not see others as leaders so they did not vote for Awo. The easterners on the other hand were still remembering the war and the role Awolowo played in starving them. Ekwueme is another tool Shagari use to get all the votes from the Biafrans. So they opted for Aboki Mallam Shagari. And again some yorubas were back biting Awo.
