Considering the economic situation in the country, a roasted maize seller was spotted dividing a maize into half in order to sell to those who can not afford to buy a full maize, which sells for between 150 and 200 naira depending on the size.

Things are really tough for many.
I remember back in 2010 when I used to spend as much as 5%-10% of my salary on Masara, sold by a very pretty bgagi girl. Reminds me of the first time I told a lady I a want to suck her breast. Unfortunatly, I didn't follow up on my rizz. I've made mistakes in this life no be small.

God bless her.. Country hard.
She's actually doing herself good. A smart business strategy to boost her sales. She might even make more profits by selling half for #60 against a full one at #100, giving buyers options. Sadly, her move is a sign of hardship in the land. Growing up, corn & most agricultural produces were never bought. You could easily get them freely within the mini-farm around the house or even the main farm owned by you or good neighbors. Even life stocks aren't left out as they are purely organically breeded. A sizable house in a very large compound where plants give the house the natural coolness. Modernity has come and of course with it's associated challenges, even worse in Nigeria as the country is neither here nor there.

E don red finish!

Typical example of how powerful purchasing power is in price models for goods and services.

If you like, increase the prices of your commodities, saying price of PMS don increase...you will reach a level no one will buy...not because they don't need what you are selling...but because, they don't have that power to buy what you are selling.

Good questions. Two important factors that matter for not only agriculture but most businesses in general -

1) Land ownership. Large scale mechanized farming of crops or animals may require substantial and fixed structural investments. Most skilled or well capitalized investors are NOT willing to put in the money because the government owns all land in Nigeria and can LEGALLY seize the farm at any time, or at least attempt to seize it. In short, right to land in Nigeria is tenuous and risky.

2) The official economic policy of Nigeria is to keep the naira strong. The government thus maintains a rigged Forex market to achieve this objective. This policy is very popular among the Nigerian people but harms the economy is several ways...just two examples will suffice

a) A strong currency makes imported goods cheaper and thus suppresses domestic productivity. This is why Nigerian farmers face ruinous foreign competition in markets where they should logically be dominant.

b) High interest rates is one of the classical ways of keeping a currency strong. This is the reason interest rates have ALWAYS been high in Nigeria, and a key impediment to investment.

Macroeconomic policies are important in setting basic incentives for economic activity. At a minimum, Nigeria must cancel the Land Use Act and float the naira if it is serious about evolving a productive and prosperous economy in the long term.

Good Luck to Nigeria.
