The Manufacturers Association of Nigeria has said that the Current Employment Condition (rate of employment) declined from 51.3 points in the last quarter of 2022 to 50.7 points in the first quarter of 2023, projecting the unemployment crisis in the real sector.

In its recently released Manufacturers CEOs Confidence Index report, the association projected that employment conditions would further decline to 47.8 points in the succeeding months.

The report is a quarterly research and advocacy publication of the association, which measures changes in the pulse of operators and trends in the manufacturing sector on a quarterly basis.

According to the report, the aggregate Index Score of MCCI declined to 54.1 points in the first quarter of 2023.

It noted that employment decisions by manufacturers had been ‘so difficult’ due to the unpredictability and difficulty in the macroeconomic environment.

It read partly, “The issues of acute shortage of forex and depreciation in naira value, cost of energy and limited supply of electricity, speculation about the effect of redesigning of naira, the National elections and the lingering adverse effect of Russian-Ukrainian war were major concerns of manufacturers in the quarter.”

In an exclusive interview with The PUNCH, the President of the Manufacturers Association of Nigeria, Francis Meshioye, expressed worry that manufacturers were beginning to downsize, while others were divesting away from Nigeria.

According to him, the recent increase in the Monetary Policy Rate, coupled with the forex crisis that trailed the floating of the naira, had made life increasingly hard for manufacturers.

He said, “We plead with the government to look at the manufacturing sector as a sector that requires special attention because the success of the manufacturing sector will boost economic growth tremendously. It will boost the economy because we will be able to produce much more goods. We will be able to spend less on importation of goods.

“This will relieve us of the foreign exchange that we are looking for. The real sector is suffering a lot. Companies are reducing their size. Some are divesting from Nigeria. If this continues, we will become an endangered sector.”

We need to get first hand experience to get sense. We all will either benefit together or loose together when we make decisions on who to vote/rig in based on hatred for a section of the country or tribe. Mind u, south and easterners get plan B if government is bad one. This I know. Imagine f.g distributing palliative as,a result of hardship. Under o.b.j this type of nonsense thing dey? Within me, i wish o.b.j had continued, though imposssoble, but Its d truth.

Yet Tinubu and APC claim unemployment rate has fallen to 4.1%

Go to UK embassy, Canada and the rest and see how Nigerians are struggling to leave the country, Yet Tinubu and his cohorts get mind to claim and celebrate that unemployment is fallen?

And these miscreants who support the evil government will keep shouting it will favour them and their family cant you see that you are brainless

No one needs more hands to do less work.

Buying power has eroded and it is natural demand drops, so don't blame people who suddenly find themselves doing less work and thus needing fewer hands.

If there is anytime the rent seeking demons in Nigeria should be condemned to hard labour under supervision(imprisonment) to boost production, it is now.

We know that times are getting tougher in Nigeria, but National Bureau of Statistics released its data, saying that more and more opportunities are being created.

Those people need to sit up and start doing proper survey and studies if they want Nigerians to take them seriously.

This is bound to happen. With weak naira low consumption and high cost of power.its not sustainable.

Until Nigerian demand their right and how they want to live, thing will continue to go south.

That's the sensible thinggo do and what emefiele tried to do by giving Dangote the required forex to complete his refinery. Had the refinery been completed and producing, we won't need forex to import petrol today. That alone can send the Naira high to N500/$ in my own rough estimate.

That's why there had to be an officially acknowledged black market and I&E window under the competent CBN gov.

By collapsing the rates into one. The godfather for from Lagos is saying in principle, wine importion is equally as important as machinery importation. A very daft economic sense.
