embarassed
I have been pondering over this for a while now. Is there any hope that the cankerworm milking our system will ever be reduced to a manageable status. Imagine a js3 student thinking about how to steal millions if he could be made a councillor. I tire oo

In a nutshell, no.

That's my realistic answer to this thread.

Maybe . . . , one day

One day when there is more patriotism, more accountability & more transparency. One day when we judge a man not by the amount of wealth that he has amassed but by his integrity. A day when wrong is seen as wrong and right is seen as right with no middle ground.

No.

You can get away with anything as long as its laced with religion and emotional sentiments.People wud look the wrong way, pretend they did not notice and castigate any sane voice that dares to raise questions.

At the end of the day,its all about the benjamins and the end wud always justify the means.sad.

I think you are being to hard on the people, things will change for the better when the peoples situation improves. When people are not their own PHCN, water corporation, police force, HMO etc. I know it is hard, but have a little faith in the people.

No. . .

There is no country in this world that isn't corrupt so I doubt that one day there would be such a nation without this particular element especially if that country is Nigeria.

However the hope is that the corruption in Nigeria will no more be the type which serves to erode the progress of the society.

Well said, the fastest way to achieving this is through a brutal no-nonsense government, which specifically goes after erring public officials, and makes scapegoats of them.
The National Assembly also has to wake up to its responsibilities by making corruption a capital offence. Punishment for corruption should range from life imprisonment to death by hanging. Public officers who are found wanting should be automatically barred from any remote contact with public office. Dubious businessmen should be publicly shamed, summarily tried and thrown out of the country
The Presidency shld refrain from interferring with EFCC and ICPC investigations, and should also met out the gravest punishments to those found wanting

Nigeria seriously needs a swift and radical change of the mindset and mentality of the populace. Let pple entring govt be scared of even losing a single kobo!

The situation as it stands now is ridiculous! Infact it encourages people to steal!

this is part of the reason why Nigeria is not progressing. Because there are to many people depending on some imaginary guy to come down from a imaginary heaven and do what they cannot come together and do themselves.

corruption cannot leave because by nature man is corrupt, but it would help if our leaders are God-fearing and true Christians who really and truly want to do the right thing for the nation and not just for themselves

Nigerians are potentially corrupt with corrupt, evil, and bizarre tendencies- they dont want to work on their individual correctness, but they want the government to be corruption free. How is that possible?

Every Nigerian is potentially corrupt and that is why I say it often that the problem of Nigeria doesnt lie at the foot of politicians but on the shoulder of every Nigerian. Beleive it or not.

You will wait till eternity if you think a man will rule this country and wipe out corruption. Not even Buhari, Ribadu or whoever you call him will ever do it unless each person decided to do it.

Even you check it- is it politicians that sit in offices and look forward to bribes before getting things done? Nope. Go to the hospitals, the nurses look for money to exchange hands to do their duties- go to the post offices, go to the government offices. Come on. When will all that be removed? My answer is never. It will not take GEJ, it will not take OBJ, it will take each our individual self.

How many of the people who shout here on Nairaland go to their offices daily and getting bribed to do their work. Many.

So long as every Nigerian thinks like all of you that have commented here, Nigeria and corruption will remain synonymous.

But if just a few can stand and be different, Corruption will be very much reduced.

Lazy and cursed all of us, cannot remain.

A man can make the different. Wake up guys.

In a nutshell, no.

That's my realistic answer to this thread.

Corruption has little to do with Nigeria and Nigerians. It was not invented by a Nigerian nor is it only practised in Nigeria. It's a widespread systemic cancer which unfortunately is entrenched in the fabric of most (if not all) nations, including the US, UK, Canada, etc.

However, the way it is practised is different. In Nigeria where there's no accountability and more importantly, no functioning systems in place, people "steal" in broad day light. In the West, they use other ways to prop up their base. The notion that "if there was no corruption in Nigeria, things will be better" is a fallacy.

So, in a nutshell, corruption is going nowhere. People will only find better ways to enrich themselves through loopholes. However, creating value for every stakeholder (including the common man) is more important. For instance, you have the folks in the NFF. Funds are allocated for football or other sports. Rather than just "chopping rice and cleaning mouth", they could clean up our league and promote it big time. Can you imagine if 50% of Nigeria's population has some allegiance to local football clubs and fill up stadiums on a weekly basis? The potential revenue from a prosperous Nigerian league will easily dwarf any funds they'd receive in the next 10years if things remain the same and even if they siphoned some funds, you'd hardly see the difference. Unfortunately, we have so many myopic airheads all over the country and it is this myopic foolishness that needs to be eradicated. It all starts and stops with the fundamental mentality of Nigerians - Get rich quick by miracle, oracle, hook or by crook!

No nation on the face of the planet earth is free of Corruption! The only difference is that corruption has eaten deep into Nigeria's DNA. Every young Nigeria now waits for their turn in politics, we like to show off. Everybody wants their child to win in order to say "My Son is in charge". I have given up on Nigeria since OBJ came to power. Can you imagine a nation where the likes of Akala, Fayose, Kalu were once a Governor?? Any nation with people like that in the position of authority will never taste or witness Prosperity.

corruption can only end in naija IF ONLY when the people themselves both the leaders and followers are ready to change thier ways. Be patriotic and really be honest about all their dealings and above all have the fear of God in them.
