Police Stepping Up Their Act. Disciplining Senior Officers. by robby1(m): 10:56pm On Oct 16, 2011
THE Inspector-General of Police (IGP), Hafiz Ringim, has set up a disciplinary committee to try both senior and junior police officers who might have erred in the course of their duties.

The Moment on Sunday reliably gathered that among the senior officers who are to appear before the committee are three Assistant Inspectors-General (AIGs) of Police whose identities the police hierarchy is shielding.

A dependable source at Police Force Headquarters (FHQ) Abuja confided in The Moment On Sunday that the committee is being headed by Deputy Inspector-General of Police (DIG) in charge of Administration, Azubuko Udah.

The source also hinted that the committee started sitting last Monday in Port Harcourt, Rivers State capital, and that about 300 police officers who have disciplinary cases against them are expected to appear before it.

Apart from the three unidentified AIGs, some senior officers of the rank of Commissioner of Police (CP), Deputy Commissioner of Police (DCP) and Assistant Commissioner (AC) are said to be among those to appear before the committee.

A source close to the committee disclosed to that 'three AIGs have already appeared before the committee. Those who were summoned were those who had queries pending against them. They were summoned to defend themselves. If the committee is convinced by their defence they would be exonerated.'

The source, however, refused to disclose the identities of the AIGs and the nature of the cases pending against them.

But investigations revealed that such queries range from corruption, insubordination, loss of arms and ammunition to desertion of duty.

Our investigations also revealed that punishment usually meted out to those indicted by the committee ranges from dismissal to compulsory retirement, reduction of rank, and redeployment to obscure offices.

The IGP is expected to approve the committee's recommendation with a covering letter to the Chairman, Police Service Commission (PSC) for implementation
