As part of Nigeria’s moves towards becoming a maritime hub in the west and central African region, the newly built Lekki Deep Seaport has started processing transhipment cargo for neighbouring countries.

Mohammed Bello-Koko, managing director of the Nigerian Ports Authority (NPA), disclosed this during a recent tour of the port facility by Adegboyega Oyetola, minister for the Marine and Blue Economy accompanied by the management of the NPA.

Bello-Koko disclosed that two of Nigeria’s neighbours have expressed interest in transshipping their cargo through Lekki Port, and with the renewed partnership with Nigeria Customs, the country will domesticate the World Customs Organisation’s guidelines on transhipment and other ease of doing business best practices.

He said that in furtherance of the resolve to leverage the competitive advantages of Lekki Deep Seaport in attaining maritime hub status, the number of transhipment cargo can only increase.

“Lekki Deep Seaport’s distinctive features such as full automation, drive-through scanners, and Super Post-Panamax size Ship-to-Shore Cranes among others, positions it for quick cargo and vessel turnaround which will greatly enhance the competitiveness of our exports especially agro-allied products in the international marketplace. With enhanced competitiveness comes increased demand which ultimately grows forex inflow into the country,” Bello-Koko said.

On his part, the Minister expressed his delight at the world-class facilities at the Lekki Port and pledged the Ministry of Marine and Blue Economy’s commitment to ensuring that the opportunities for national prosperity inherent in the Lekki Deep Seaport are maximally utilised.

Just recently, the NPA procured and deployed two first-of-its-kind in Africa, Azimuth Stern Drive (ASD) 80-Ton Bollard Pull Tugboats to equip Lekki Port towards providing the best marine services.

The visit to Lekki Port, which came after the new Minister of Marine & Blue Economy toured Lagos and Tin-Can Island Port Complexes, signposts the importance of the Nigerian Ports Authority in actualising President Bola Tinubu’s vision for national prosperity.

Are you an importer?
For over 7 months now your goods don't stay more than 5 days in the port after the ship has docked. Processing is as fast as anything now, if you have an importer ask him.

You guys should stop saying what you don't know.

That is really not the issue. Which neighbouring countries are they referring to? Is it Benin or Togo or Chad. We all know Chad gets their shipping easily and cost effectively from Cameroon, if Nigeria were sincere and strategic ot wojld have been the development of Eastern ports to offer competitive services to Chad so that it will be cheaper using rail from PH and Calabar to Chad. It is sad that they have refused to expand d and dredge these ports to allow for shipping. It is rather too costly to ship from Lagos to Chad, already Niger is out of the equation, so which neighbouring country are they referring to?

It is not about too early, I am talking about what I know, Nigeria might not be good, but we still need to give them credit where they get it right. No importer will agree to his views because they are pure lies as of today, days are gone when your containers stay weeks in the port.

It is well

I can see lots of Economic Progress and Momentum growth forming around Nigeria.
A New Nigeria is Possible!
What we need is to:
1.- shun and kill Corruption.
2.- get Constant Power ( 24/7) and Nigeria MUST DEMAN for it both in the City and Villages- as done in Ghana. If we get Power / Energy right, then 60% of our Probly will be solved because so many others things will follow e g most of the Computer and Phones Accessories can be locally Produced, hence we will be saving our Foreign Exchange Currencies, and the Naira becomes Stronger against other Currencies!
3.If Nigeria Power is Constant- we eliminate Generators- which is unnecessary wastages of Importations into Nigeria!
4- It will be the beginning of - Food Processing, Agro-Industrial Revolution, etc and
5.More Employment of our Youths!

Let other state governors create a good business environment and partner with multinationals even foreign companies to build a port in their state. Reach out to investors since FG don't want to prioritize it. You see the problem we have is no governor wants to invest in long-term projects because they won't reap from it, and no investor is ready to partner with most states because they are afraid of continuity from the next administration.
Things are happening in Lagos because investors are sure of the continuity from the next administration
