CSCHEI Commends The appointment of the Acting Chairman of FIRS, Mr. Zacch Adedeji ; More campaign needed to educate Nigerians on taxes.

CSCHEI charges the office of the FIRS Chairman and admonishes its functions to Assess, collect, account and enforce payment of taxes as may be due to the Government or any of its agencies. Taxes are crucial because governments collect this money and use it to finance social projects. Social projects that are of benefit to the well-being of the people and society. However, Nigeria has one of the lowest revenue-to-GDP ratios in the world, which makes its fiscal position vulnerable to shocks. A hands-on approach is in order due to the economic recession and high inflation, more damaging due to the removal of fuel subsidy.

The IMF informs that Nigeria's low tax revenue has been mainly driven by the basis of its indirect taxes, low tax compliance, large amount of tax exemptions as well as low rates. Given Nigeria's very low level of tax revenues, administration measures alone will not be sufficient to raise needed resources. Bolder tax policy measures—including raising indirect tax rates to the level comparable to ECOWAS countries and rationalizing numerous tax incentives—will need to be adopted. We recommend partnership with NGOs, CSOs, and CBOs to lead a campaign on the benefits of paying levies and taxes and it's effect on human capital development.
