Racoon. This is a matter I am quite well informed with.
This issues with discos.

It's like Nigerians have a short memory.

What happened was that Goodluck Jonathan's Government accessed several funds present in several sectors/ministries before his election against Buhari.

They accessed sooo many sectors including These funds that came form worldbank for the Discos.

Several of those sectors have not recovered from those years 2014/2015 till this very day.

NDDC has been using more than 70% of their budget for past 8years to pay for old jobs.

Only 30% from each yearly budget goes for new jobs. Of which more than half of that 30% pays their salaries and the rest looted away.

Maybe end of the day only 10% successfully goes for new jobs each year for past 8 to 9 years.

This same thing happened in so many sectors. Ministries of works, ferma, NNPC, You name it

If the leader really wants to address issues, he must go back to the root of the problems.

Most of the people responsible for these looting are even richer than the ministeries they robbed.

Each president keeps crying that SUBSIDY IS A SCAM, SUBSIDY IS A SCAM, albeit sincere intentions of saving money that goes to the scam.

Yet the president doesn't want to dig deep to recover what has been stolen.
Even if that president is innocent of the scam, he would be sooo careful of not indicting politicians&friends close to him.

Rather than Buhari to have dug into those pockets and accounts that held the funds inorder to replenish the losses/debt being owed to contractors, his Government went borrowing for funding and relooting.

undecided

When a Meter Asset Provider has a name like "G Unit", undecided it doesn't exactly inspire confidence.

All jokes aside...when will the burden on the consumer be lightened?

You pay for metering
You pay for replacement of faulty transformers
You pay for electric pole installation
You pay for maintenance/repair (of equipment that belongs to DISCOs & GENCOs undecided)
You pay for the electricity itself
You pay for vandalization done by other people

The consumer pays...and keeps paying...and keeps paying...and he still doesn't have electricity. There are all sorts of regulatory and quasi-regulatory bodies (NERC, NEMSA, SON, etc.) doing I don't know what - and service delivery by DISCOs is still very poor. The entire sector is a hot, steaming mess.

When will it end?

Edit: Maybe distribution companies should have chosen a better acronym. A disco is where you go to 'lose' yourself and perhaps get very drunk. Any surprise we are still staggering about in darkness?

While noting that the increase in metering is inevitable, a Professor of Energy and Electricity Law at the University of Lagos, Yemi Oke said the call to upgrade meters is suspicious and must be rejected.

“They don’t trust them. I don’t see why a meter that has been duly tested and calibrated needs to be upgraded,” he said.

Oke said Nigerians must not submit to the idea that their meters must be upgraded, stressing that there is no convincing evidence that the meters are faulty.

I don't understand this metering burden.
Did any private person or business get their meter for free?

And speaking of the World Bank; the World Bank does not give support. The World Bank gives loans.

Greed & Corruption, shorthand for when inept foreign companies partnering Nigerians to deliver services to Nigerians cheat Nigerians knowing they can get away because Nigerian partners would be blamed for corruption. The Nigeria partners are unable to defend themselves because of Nigeria's reputation for corruption and because their ignorance of the market and incompetence was what made them sign contract with the inept foreign firms in the first place (sold on precepts of cost effectiveness ) instead of the ideal ones.

This types of issues may be what David Nweze Umahi is discovering in relation to the road work contacts and atrocious historic road deliveries .
In the end it is our local representatives that we can hold responsible for any short-change of goods and services because they are the ones who show the outsiders how to cheat and beat the system else they ought to protest loudly immediately they notice anything amiss from the foreign partners.

This idiotic halfbaked professor is precisely why universities keep churning out blockheads.

The meter upgrade is a universal response to the token identifier rollover event due in 2024, and has nothing to do with calibration or faults. It's just resetting the base clock which counts token generation for identification purposes, and is designed to be reset every 30 years for all STS meters.

A simple research, even an ordinary Google search, would have adequately informed him.

But no, he's a "professor" and thus knows everything. Why bother with a pesky research?

It takes a just leadership to fight injustices or bring justice into the system, and an incorruptible leadership to fight corruption. Until we have all these in power or positions. It can only get worse and resultantly bring the country under.

Some of these meters ought to have been phased out because they're Obsolete. Meter upgrade is not new any way only that the customers are not comfortable with the level of illegality in the land. Reason (s) for the update is because some of the micro chips or materials used in the course of production are old already n might not be 💯% effective. Most meters (up to 10 years) in d system will start malfunctioning which includes but not limited to blank screen, not accepting token, working but d units remain d same n so on. I just hope d upgrade is well monitored as clearly stated

There is a point in any business where you transfer all your cost of operations to the final consumer in order to survive. Nigeria refuses to be industrialized and prefers to import things we should be making
