They did.

The refineries did not work because the government then started selling fuel at a loss and paying a subsidy to cover the loss , and then the whole mess came in.

Once you set the price of a good or service below what it costs to produce, there would be sabotage, corruption and evil doings and wrecked production instruments. Because things need a profit to run well.

Niger is poorer than us, they produce crude and they have a working refinery because they sell fuel at a profit. Right now it is above 1000 per liter there. The army junta has not reduced the price.

Communist countries used to subsidize food. The result? Long queues and massive scarcity of products. Then they dumped the subsidy.
You say we sell at loss that why we don't have refineries working ? Let keep this aside first

Are you telling me the multi-millions of dollars these govt people embezzles can't fix a working refinery .

Baba, Nigeria get money pass UK
We have no right to be suffering in this hardship like this.

All these ypur profit and loss talk no make any sense.

These people are stealing our wealth and not leaving behing any significant growth.

Subsidy is one of the things contributing to our debt. And since politicans make the decision to keep subsidy and have done so since 1999, it is still their fault

( Other things that keep us in debt is the fluctuations in oil price, import dependency and massive looting and corruption. Failure to diversify the economy worsens the matter).

If we had kept petrol at N65 since 2011, by now subsidy costs would have been running between 900 to 1000 per liter, up from 34 naira in Dec 2011. And we would have been paying for the thing from other parts of the budget.

Nothing like cheap fuel

Leave that story because fuel subsidy is the only thing that every Nigerian benefits from.

Subsidize fuel or not the money that was supposed to be used for the subsidy will eventually be syphon so what are we saying?

If they like let them use 10k per liter for fuel subsidy.

No good roads, medical facilities, electricity yet you said common subsidy that everyone is benefiting from is a bad idea, says who?

Buhari did EXACTLY what Tinubu is doing now. And both of them did what EVERY NIGERIAN LEADER has done in the name of subsidy since 1973.

Sell petrol at a loss, and pay a subsidy that cannot cover the loss long term without us running into debt.

You guys, and the Tinubu guys do not see it, because you think you can buy something that costs N100 at N1.

Anyway, enjoy your subsidy. At the end, all of you Nigerians, you are the same. You want cheap fuel.

If we sold fuel today at the N145 it was under Buhari, we would be paying N800 per liter as subsidy by now. Is that sustainable, oga?

If we sold fuel today at the N87 it was under GEJ, we would be paying N900 or more per liter as subsidy now. Is that sustainable?

Tinubu=Buhari-=GEJ=Obj=Yaradua=army.

We dey pay too much for this cheap fuel.

Indeed, if you think that Buhari is better than Tinubu, you don't have any awareness of how much debt subsidy has plunged our economy into, apart from the other causes of our debt, corruption included.

The honest truth is, we have paid too much for cheap fuel. And for tinubu to bring back cheap fuel, it shows that his government has decided to return to one more failed government policy.

Well, let's keep lying to ourselves. Niger and Ghana buy fuel above N900 per liter...and BOTH HAVE WORKING REFINERIES. No subsidy, working refineries. The income we earn from oil is too low for us to pay for subsides and pay for good refineries. Not when we produce less than Libya....for a population twenty times the size of Libya/
Op is telling a boldfaced wicked lie

Disregard. Don't believe him.

Petrol is not $3.9 per litre in USA. This is very misleading.

Petrol is $3.9 per gallon in USA instead even lower than that in some regions.

A gallon is equivalent to approximately 3.8 litres.

somebody without any idea will read this your comment and think you are making sense. You compare Niger and Ghana with Nigeria because they have a functional refinery but you did not tell us how they get their crude.
We produce less crude you did not ask why, or is it that there are no oil Wells or crude had dried up from ground.
This whole subsidy problem will be solve with just a refinery.
You are justifying that Nigeria cannot carry the burden of paying subsidy and building refinery but one man can build a refinery in the same country.
FG can also borrow money to build unless railways.
Meanwhile they can borrow to build refinery and from the proceeds they can build railway to where ever they want to build it to.
Lastly the price of crude is going up simply because of price of dollar if dollar to Naira because #200 the pump price will also come down drastically.
So please do analysis be u talk.
Have even thought of Government giving licence to IOC like Total, Agip, Shell, Indorama etc to build refinery and see if they will not do it.

The statement ascribed to the CSO makes no sense. Since NNPC is the sole importer of petrol, which marketers is he referring to that benefit from the devaluation to ask for higher payments? People who don't even know the goings on in the industry just like to say nonsense, because it will sell in the papers.

Same way the marketers are always saying the price of petrol will only crash when we use Nigerian crude and not imported crude!! How will it crash, when the crude will be paid for and not free. Even if petrol reduces by N70 because the freight and import duties etc are no longer there, is N70 a crash!!?

You forgot to include devaluation of naira! Is like you undersestimate the impact of Devaluation.

Devaluation in itself is not an issue, it simply means more naira After converting revenue in dollars. Had it been the wages and salaries had been adjusted accordingly since 2011, people would not be complaining. Instead this guys just left the salaries and wages the way they were since 2011 that's why there's massive Looting and embezzlement going on in the civil service and government offices.

As in the salaries and wages are so poor that if you don't embezzle you can't feed properly 😂🤣

but why is it very difficult for the 6th most crude oil producing nation in the world to have functionable refineries ?
it's actually corruption and the greediness of the political elites that is killing Nigeria, not the so-called subsidy.
every nation subsidize one thing or the other to the benefits of her citizens, but Nigeria 's type of fuel subsidy is abused through the corrupted system of governance .
if the FG cannot make the refineries to be productive, even with all the billions spent on turn around maintainance, they have no other options than to subsidize fuel for nigerians, or else pms could soon become the product of the few privileged citizens.

Tinubu has been the brain behind and has presided over the economic misfortune of this country right from buharis first tenure.

Good morning, we cannot exonerate Buhari from shortfalls of his government. He promised to resuscitate our refinery; for eight years, non of our refineries worked and Dangote refinery that was hyped is not refining any crude oil.

My concern is that the price of fuel has affected the price of everything in Nigeria, APC failed after grabbing power from PDP.
