Peter Obi Emphasizes the Importance of Ethical Paths to Office, Rejects Certificate Forgery as a Shortcut

“The process of assuming public office holds paramount importance, and it must adhere to ethical standards rather than resorting to expedient shortcuts such as falsifying certificates,” emphasized Peter Obi in a video statement.

In the context of the 2023 Presidential election, Peter Obi, the Labor Party’s Presidential candidate, asserted that individuals who gain access to office through fraudulent means are unlikely to conduct themselves with integrity and responsibility during their tenure.

Speaking in an interview with Arise TV on October 2, the former governor of Anambra state emphasized that while possessing the most prestigious educational qualifications is not mandatory, it is essential for leaders to be transparent and morally upright regarding their past to effectively lead.

“In the realm of qualifications, I haven’t discussed the need for advanced degrees or similar pursuits. Qualifications should revolve around leaders making truthful and ethical statements and actions. It hinges on principles of honor and integrity, serving as the bedrock of societal progress,” he stated.

Obi expressed concerns about the prevalent issues of falsified certifications, age discrepancies, and other forms of dishonesty among leaders in Nigeria. He emphasized that such practices hinder individuals from making morally sound decisions and setting a positive example for society.

He then cited examples of renowned global leaders and innovators who overcame educational disadvantages or even dropped out of school, achieving remarkable success that transformed the world. “One need not possess an array of degrees to attain greatness; however, one must be forthright about their past to provide clarity on their current position. History is replete with great individuals who hailed from humble backgrounds or lacked formal education, and their journeys are a testament to their greatness,” he noted.

Regarding the prospect of collaborating with President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s administration for Nigeria’s development, Obi emphasized the significance of adhering to proper procedures and channels for leadership transitions. He stressed that challenging the legitimacy of the process through which a government assumes power is a critical aspect of nation-building. “We are at a juncture where we are scrutinizing the process, as this is an integral part of nation-building. It is imperative that individuals access positions of authority through legitimate means rather than circumventing established protocols,” he concluded.
