The World Health Organisation report reveals that apart from cannabis, other substances used by children and youths surveyed in Africa include benzodiazepines such as diazepam and chlorpromazine while 3.7 per cent inject themselves with drugs. In this report, GBENGA OLONINIRAN writes about drug-addicted children’s battle against brain disorders and violence https://punchng.com/violence-depression-spread-in-cities-as-more-teenagers-fall-prey-to-illicit-drugs/ 1 Like

Babafemi believes that for teenage girls to have been sexually exploited, they must have been induced by mind-altering substances. “All of these things go hand in hand. For instance, the kind of things those girls were subjected to, they are not things you would do with a clear mind. The criminals behind these activities have a way of indulging these young children by giving them mind-altering substances that will enable them to be able to withstand what they’re lured into. “Those kinds of girls of around 15 years, the oldest being 17, you can’t imagine your sister or kids of that age going through that kind of a thing. Apart from indulging them to withstand sexual exploitation, the men hired to do these things also come under the influence of mind-altering substances, meaning that they must have been abusing these little children. It’s not something you can do with a clear mind. Nobody within his right senses will do that kind of thing. Whether you like it or not, drug influence is involved in all of these,” Babafemi told The PUNCH. Woman hides Colorado In early August, the Lagos State Police Command confirmed the arrest of an adult female trader, Taye Abass, who was selling a hard drug known as Colorado through her 10-year-old niece (name withheld) to evade police checks. The woman who lives in the Oko-Oba area of Lagos confessed to the offence while being paraded by the police at the state headquarters. Abass blamed economic hardship for her action. “When I went to Ilorin, my mother asked me to bring her with me to Lagos about two months ago. When she got to my place, feeding was hard. Where I usually take my drinks for sale, somebody then introduced me to Colorado that I should be selling it. He told me the police always arrested people selling it. So whenever I am taking the drinks for sale, I usually put it (the Colorado) in her underwear, and ask her to put it in the shop where I always collect it back from her,” 45-year-old Abass told journalists when she was being paraded. Speaking, the underage girl said she was brought to the police station and when she wanted to bathe, the drug was found on her body. “I told them it was my sister’s mum that put it on me. She started putting it on me when I came to her place. I will later put off the underwear and remove the drug. She says it’s because of the police. It’s because the police cannot search me (being a small girl),” the girl said at the police station. Homelessness worsens One of the causes of underage exposure to hard drugs, as identified by experts, is are environmental factor, some of which include places the children live. During our correspondent’s visit to Arepo, in the Obafemi Owode Local Government Area of Ogun State, it was observed that some children of ages between four and seven loitered around the Arepo bridge. Under the bridge is the abode of their parents. Mattresses and mats were seen rolled up during the day and laid at night under the bridge where the children and their parents sleep. Some of the kids who were usually seen begging passersby and motorists for money or food were ready to take any substance offered to them by anyone. Our correspondent who was holding a container of water was approached by two of the children, asking that they should be given the container without bothering to know what was inside. A bike man, Mohammed Yakubu, blamed the children’s fate on the poverty of their parents. Yakubu said, “Their parents came from the North and settled here but could not afford to rent a house, so they sought shelter under the bridge.” Children battling mental health disorder A mental health professional, Dr. Tamuno-opubo Addah, warns that exposure of underage to hard drugs has implications on their mental health. According to the professional, children under the age of 20 still have their brains developing, and exposure to altering substances could disrupt the brain developmental process, causing such children to make poor decisions which may include violence. “Consumption of substances like Colorado, cannabis and alcohol during the critical developmental age can have profound effects. One of them is brain development disruption. At that age, the brain is developing until the mid-twenties. Early exposure to drugs can impede this development leading to cognitive deficit or reduced ability to regulate emotions leading to poor decision making and addiction. Another one is mental health disorders,” Dr. Tamuno-opubo, a psychotherapist and founder, Mental Health Support Initiative at the Obafemi Awolowo University, Ile-Ife, Osun State, said in an interview. “A girl that just turned 16; her friend packaged a gift for her. It was a well-designed throw pillow. When the mum opened the pillow, she saw wraps of marijuana in the pillow,” Tamuno-opubo said while giving an instance of reports he had gotten on the exposure of underage to drug abuse. “I want to implore parents, caregivers, and older siblings to be intentional with their children, wards, or younger siblings,” he added, advising that people should be very careful in consuming what the other person is holding. Parents give alcohol The spokesperson for the NDLEA, Babafemi, while speaking in an interview with our correspondent, confirmed that the agency had encountered instances where parents gave alcoholic substances to their children. He said the parents did this in the name of birthday celebrations or other celebrations. Babafemi said, “The problem is something that has cut across virtually all ages. We’ve seen videos of children of five, six and seven years celebrating birthdays and their parents giving them beer to drink in public as part of celebrations. So it all starts from there. Beer itself is a drug. There are quite a number of predisposing factors responsible for this thing, including the home, the family, the community, schools, peer pressure, social media and environmental factors.” He said what the agency could do was to come to people with the right message to discourage them from going into drug abuse and “that is why the agency in June 2021 launched the War Against Drug Abuse Campaign which we have been taking to schools, traditional centres, places of worship, workplaces and communities. “This is done in partnership with nongovernmental organisations and civil society organisations just to ensure that people are aware of the dangers inherent in some of these things that they consciously or unconsciously consume.” Mental health A Professor of Public Health, Tanimola Makanjuola, expressed worries that hard drug addiction had become a serious menace. According to him, hard drug addiction is tied to violence in society. “Hard drug addiction has become a very serious menace in Nigeria. The involvement of the underage in this practice makes the problem more worrisome,” the don said. He added that “the effect on the mental health of generations of Nigerians is further threatened.” “Drug addiction is often tied to a lot of social ills like crime, violence, rape, etc,” says Makanjuola, a Professor of Public Health at the University of Ilorin, Ilorin and a Consultant Public Health Physician at the university’s teaching hospital. According to the professor, the NDLEA of recent is doing a lot to control drug trafficking, “a lot more needs to be done by the government to handle the problem of hard drugs. Parents and society also have big roles to play in controlling this menace.” NDLEA combating menace The image maker of the NDLEA, Babafemi, said there was hardly any week that the agency’s commands across the states of the federation didn’t take the campaign to schools and other places. He reiterated that prevention was better than cure. “Apart from taking advocacy to the stakeholders and places, we also partner with the state and federal ministries of education. Our Unplug School Campaign aims to educate teachers and students about the dangers of these illicit substances,” Babafemi said as he noted that this was because the students spent more time with their teachers than their parents due to the work nature of many parents. “Another step the agency has also taken is to work with the federal ministry of education to ensure that we have drug education as part of the curriculum in our schools. I’m glad to tell you that the Federal Ministry of Education has also done this. All we’re pushing is for the schools to activate or reactivate these studies,” the spokesman said. He added that in terms of corrective measures, the agency had created a drug abuse call centre where psychiatrist, doctors, counselors, clinical psychologists and other health experts work 24/7 to attend to calls and provide support for callers. He noted that the toll-free line was provided to assist those afraid of stigmatisation or who did not know what to do. 1 Like |

See how drugs have bastardized the lives of young people. Though things are awfully bad, this is not a reason young people should find solace in drug running or abuse. 14 Likes |

These problems stem from a great deal of neglect from the affected parents. Not guiding them through life's early stages is what most parents are guilty of. These days, little or nothing is done to impart moral values or standards to their children. The very foundation of child upbringing should be thoroughly addressed. 9 Likes |

Vyzz: Poverty IS NOT the cause of all this. Rich children take this substances too. The root cause of this is the system we're in. Do we have government bodies that can stop all this? Yes we do. But they would always turn a blind eye towards things like this because it benefits them too. The world would always turn a blind eye to human trafficking, organ trafficking, drugs dealings, prostitution etc because of how lucrative this ventures are, Top shots in the above businesses? POLITICIANS. Who should sign a lot to stop all of this? POLITICIANS. Would they sign a lot to stop themselves from making profits? NO. I always say here; Take care of yourself, the government would not help you. Try to be on Guard as much as possible, the government force would not protect you. It's the right types of food and take care of your health, The hospitals would not help you, there are in business. Connect to the most high, Seek for the truth, guard/purify your soul from stain and weight, Your religion would not help you. Strive to better yourself every day.
