President Goodluck Jonathan has ordered that awareness campaigns and workshops be held on the implementation of the Freedom of Information Law, the Secretary to the Government of the Federation, Mr. Pius Anyim, said Thursday.

The talks are to hold between the government, civil society, the National Assembly, the media and other concerned parties.

Anyim, the Head of Service of the federation, and a representative of the National Security Adviser, on Thursday met with lawmakers to discuss the implementation of the new law.

He said the president had personally ordered that the terms and models of implementation of the law be made public at the workshops, in demonstration of the administration commitment to transparency.

"We are to discuss the modalities for the workshop and get all to abide by that law," he said. "That, we believe shows the seriousness of this government to operate open government.”

The bill, a long-standing legislation that was passed by the National Assembly after nearly a decade, was one of the bills signed into law by Jonathan just before the end of his last term in May 2011.

The bill mandates government offices to make available necessary information to the public on request.

Part of the law requires a committee of the National Assembly to liaise with a similar body from the executive to implement the law.
