Proverbs 11:2 pride leads to disgrace, but with humility comes wisdom.

The attitude of spiritual modesty and the fear of the Lord is called humility. That, it can be said, is a lack of pride. God gave us wisdom as a gift, and it displays itself indeed. Ask God for wisdom if you lack it, according to the book of James.

Because King Solomon was humble, God bestowed upon him immeasurable wisdom. This inspired King Solomon to write much of the book of Proverbs, which offers wisdom and understanding about living righteously in God’s eyes.

“The fear of the Lord is the beginning of knowledge; fools despise wisdom and instruction.” Proverbs 1:7 KJV

“Humility is the fear of the Lord, its wages are riches and honor and life.” Proverbs 22:4 NIV

Solomon the great king possessed riches beyond what we could ever imagine. Because of his humility, he was honored by all the nations and lived a full and prosperous life. Although we may not be kings, the statement is still true because true humility results in honor.

In his letter to the Ephesians, Paul included a prayer for Christians that can be used to clarify Proverbs.

“…the God of our Lord Jesus Christ, the Father of glory, may give you the Spirit of wisdom and revelation in the knowledge of him, having the eyes of your hearts enlightened, that you may know what is the hope to which he has called you, what are the riches of his glorious inheritance in the saints, and what is the immeasurable greatness of his power toward us who believe. Ephesians 1:17-19 ESV

His prayer tells us that God will pour out spiritual wisdom and knowledge upon us if we humble ourselves before Him and His Word. God honors us and grants us riches that are available only through Him as a result of our faith in Him. He showers blessings upon us in accordance with His glorious riches and out of His great love.

Our ability to receive God’s promises of riches, honor, and long life depends on our level of humility and fear of Him. You must be humble if you want to receive God’s wisdom.
