To discourage Higher demand on forex ? To encourage local production?

Or maybe part of an elaborate plan to make a select few rich since those items weren't totally banned from import but you just cannot access forex from cbn, hence you have to get FX from the black market.

Summary is that emefiele is not an innocent man.

Because it was felt at the time that we could manufacture them at home. Then we also at the time had issues with dollar revenue

Besides it wasn't an import ban, it was a ban by the CBN on importers of the stuff from accessing them via its auspices . You want to import toothpick for example ? Fine, just get your own dollars. Don't approach the ceebeehen

Ibeto and Lafarge cement would love to have a word with you.

Most rice and tomato production does happen in the North anyway too

To make business boom for the ab0kis into bureau de change I guess.. notice Emefiele placed ban on crypto too at a point before PYO stepped in.
The CBN has been liberated successfully from sharks using it to oppress other ethnicities.

They banned from from obtaining forex from CBN, but importation was not banned, they are to source forex from the black market

No.2

if this is ist, the question from me is why was custom going after every imported rice? Was that because they didn't pay duties?

Buhari wanted to boast local production which is good but some Nigerians saw that as an opportunity to make inappropriate profits thereby causing unnecessary inflation.
If this policy will bring competition with our local prices thereby forcing downward price of goods then so be it.

Spot on.

It ought to be a blessing but unfortunately it wasn't.
Even prices of local rice skyrocketed ever since.

We Nigerians are wicked

Nigeria is an abysmally abnormal country. There's no single policy that is promulgated without the elite / rulers in mind .
And,not to digress but that '99 constitution,it has to be reviewed!

Buhari is just a mugu. Did anybody ban beans, cassava, yam, okro, melon, onions importation before Nigerians started producing them ourselves?

Some things on said list are not what we can produce.

And even for so called simple things like toothpick or cotton bud, there are simple things that should be put in place before such bans...... Are we any better today?
