Gunshots, Ballot Snatching Mar Lagos Lg Election •we Supported Fashola, Not Acn by werepeLeri: 11:21am On Oct 23, 2011
The poor performance of the local government in Lagos State in the last three years may have affected Saturday’s poll as voters refused to turn out at the various polling booths monitored by Sunday Tribune.

Electorate at Surulere Local Government Area of the state attributed the low turn out to poor performance of the successive local government administrations, adding that there was no need to vote for them anymore.

According to one of the voters, Mr. Aruna Saheed, those who turned up at the polling booths had done so to show support for the state governor, Mr. Babatunde Fashola, SAN, and not the ruling Action Congress of Nigeria (ACN) or any of its chairmanship candidates.

At the polling booth, located inside the State Junior Secondary School, Eric Moore Ward, Itolo Street in Surulere where the governor cast his ballot, just a little above 40 people turned up to vote between 8.00 a.m. and 12.00 p.m., out of the 870 registered voters.

Politicians at the community were seen moving from one house to another to convince residents to come out for the exercise.

One of the politicians, who refused to mention her name, was seen ringing a bell to create awareness for residents about the ongoing election.

A resident, Mr. Kolapo Rasaki, told Sunday Tribune that he refused to vote because he did not know any of the chairmanship candidates.

Rasaki, who was playing football when our correspondent met him, said he did not know any of the candidates for the elective posts.

“I don’t know these people. We only know Fashola. The governor is the only one that is working in this state. I don’t know the incumbent chairman. I don’t know the new candidate. So, why should I vote for someone that I don’t know?”

It was observed that the major streets in Lagos were turned to football pitches as residents spent the free period to engage themselves in sporting activities.

Reacting to questions, shortly after he cast his ballot, the state governor, Fashola, described the exercise as peaceful, based on the feelers he received from other quarters. He said the state would not hesitate to punish anybody arrested for electoral offences, irrespective of their party.

“We have planned for the worst; we are looking for the best. We will prosecute electoral offenders to make a statement that elections such as this are important to us.

“So far, from the reports that we have, the election has been peaceful. We expected it. We planned for it,” he said.

Despite the low turnout, the governor said the poll was given high attention, adding that “I was not surprised at the high level of attention the election had attracted. Lagos is a global city. The attention is expected because Lagos is the heartbeat of Nigeria. This election is a small election of Nigeria.”

Meanwhile, Former Lagos State governor, Senator Bola Tinubu, caused a drama at yesterday's local government election when he arrived at his polling area in Ikeja without a voter card.

Tinubu, who arrived the venue of the polling centre in the morning, caused a stir when he bluntly told electoral officers conducting the exercise that he was not with his voter card and that the officials should allow him to vote.

“Well, my people, I have forgotten my voter card at home, hope you can recognise me. I am Ashiwaju Ahmed Bola Tinubu, the national leader of the Action Congress of Nigeria (ACN),” he said.

This comment elicited laughter from election officials who were conducting the exercise.

The officials subsequently gave him the ballot paper and he performed his civic duty.

After casting his vote, he described the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) as a party of master riggers, advising the leadership of the party to come to Lagos and learn how to conduct credible elections.

Meanwhile, POLITICAL thugs armed with rifles and other weapons at Odo Isiwola in Eredo Local Council Development Area (LCDA) in Epe Local Goverment Area of Lagos State yesterday disrupted the local government election.

The irate youths, in a bid to discourage registered voters from casting their votes, stormed the polling unit in Odo Isiwola with guns and other weapons, a development that forced many eligible voters to turn back for fear of being attacked.

The thugs also reportedly beat up the driver of a vehicle sighted during the poll as they went on unchallenged, owing to the absence of security personnel as of the time of the incident.

Shortly after the drama, a member of the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC) was seen at the area monitoring the elction that was later conducted.

Meanwhile, as of press time, the opposition in Eredo had been jubilating over the perceived outcome of the election.

Poor voter turn out in Apapa Local Government
The election in this area was tinted with poor turn out of voters even as they lamented alleged lack of awareness of the voting day and duration of the exercise among the electorate.

Sunday Tribune’s observation of 10 wards in the local government area showed that electoral officers came late to polling units and voting did not commence until about 11.30 a.m.

The late arrival of the electoral officers was said to have been caused by some logistic problems encountered in sorting out of voting materials, just as there were challenges of personnel for the exercise.

Speaking with Sunday Tribune, a voter and party agent, who simply identified himself as Felix, said they had been waiting for the electoral officers and materials.

Free food at party chieftain’s residence
Meanwhile, Sunday Tribune also observed that one of the chieftains of a party in Apapa Government Reservation Area had his house turned to a Mecca of sort as members of his party were given free food before and after voting.

Further findings revealed that ambulances put on standby for emergency were used to convey food items and drinks to party members in the wards in the local government area.

Major roads turn football pitch in Amuwo Odofin Local Government
At the local government area, compared to the last general election, most voters stayed indoor, even as major streets in the highbrow area were turned to football pitch by young boys and girls.

Sunday Tribune’s visit to the area at about 12 noon showed that only very few people have cast their votes.

Speaking with Sunday Tribune, the incumbent chairman of the local government area, Mr. Ayodele Adewale, said compared to the last election, the exercise was peaceful and the turn out impressive.

He said security operatives had been on alert and that they had strengthened their network to bring to book anybody that tried to foment trouble in the area.

On the apathy by the electorate towards the election, Adewale said considering the high level of literacy in the area, the electorate were alive to their civic responsibilities.

He explained that the Action Congress of Nigeria (ACN) was the party to beat in the local government as it had a lot of selling points it could rely on to garner the votes of the electorate.

Man arrested for campaigning during election
Meanwhile, a reliable source confided in Sunday Tribune that one Akin Oloyede was arrested for trying to sway some voters to vote for a particular party’s candidate at 11th Avenue in Festac Town.

One nabbed for snatching ballot box in Ojo Local Government
At Ojo Local Government Area, an unconfirmed report had it that one of the thugs loyal to one of the parties candidates for the chairmanship position was arrested while trying to snatch a ballot box.

At the local government secretariat, at about 1.00 p.m., it was observed that most electorate did not bother to come out as they expressed displeasure with the governance in the locality.

Also, young men were seen playing football on the road leading into Ojo town.

Poll peaceful in Ijora/Badia LCDA
The local council development council area, which was considered to be a flash point, was relatively peaceful as voters came out in large numbers to exercise their voting right.

Sunday Tribune observed the presence of heavily armed security personnel patrolling major streets in the area.

Speaking with Sunday Tribune, an electorate, Alhaji Okesuna Adeoluwa, said the exercise in the area had been peaceful, but that the electoral officers came behind schedule, noting that this was not good for the exercise.

He said there was poor awareness as regard the date and duration of the exercise.

Large turn out in Epe Ward B
The situation was calm and in Ward B Unit 102 in Epe Local Government where there was a large turn out. The polling booth was placed in front of the house of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) chairmanship candidate for the local government, Tunde Oluwo.

There was also heavy presence of security personnel in order to guarantee safety and orderliness.

In some polling units in the same local government, there were sounds of gunshots, a development that disrupted the election.

PDP, ACN trade blames over gunshots
Consequent upon this development, PDP officials blamed followers of the ACN, claiming that they wanted to mar the peaceful election because they knew that the people were against them.

The ACN also blamed the PDP for the violence. The situation was, however, brought under control by the security personnel.

PDP councillor arrested, handcuffed
In another development, the police arrested and handcuffed a PDP councillor at Ward B. He was quoted to have said, “they are using the police to harrass us.”

The young man was reportedly beaten up by the policemen, but was later released after much plea.

Disquiet in Somolu over candidates
There was skirmish in Somolu allegedly because the ACN fielded two people for the same position.

The development was said to have angered the electorate who claimed that the ACN candidate was imposed on them.

Electoral officials, security personnel idle in Alimosho
At Ijegun/Ikotun, the few security personnel available were sitting idle, while electoral officials were also not engaged.

Though electoral materials were available at some units, voters did not turn out.

The traditional ruler of Egbeda, Oba Samuel Balogun, told Sunday Tribune that he and his chiefs made efforts to encourage voters to come out by using town criers.

Some youths who also spoke with Sunday Tribune alleged that they had not, in any way, enjoyed the dividends of democracy and wondered why they should be asked to vote.

However, the chairman of Alimosho Local Government Area, Mr. Israel Adekunle, said he was impressed with the turn out, which he described as 70 per cent.

Indifference attends election in Ikorodu
There was voter apathy in some parts of Ikorodu during yesterday's election.

As of 10.00 a.m., when Sunday Tribune went round the town, the people were indifferent to the poll as they did not bother to come out.

This reportedly made some leaders of the ACN in the town to quickly embark on mobilisation of voters.

A chieftain of the party in Majidun area of the town, Alhaji Rafiu Yusuff, blamed the situation on inadequate publicity, lamenting that many people were unaware of the election.

The situation was the same in Igbogbo, Agric and Odogunyan areas of the town.

Peaceful election in Isolo LCDA
The election was generally peaceful in Isolo Local Council Development Area.

However, while there was impressive turn out of voters in some of the polling units, others witnessed low turn out of voters.

Candidate of the ACN in the election for the LCDA, Alhaji Shamsudeen Abiodun Olaleye, told Sunday Tribune, shortly after the exercise, that the exercise was satisfactory.

“Here in our area, the election was peaceful and orderly. In some poliing booths, people came out impressively, in others, the turn out was not too impressive. But we thank God that there was no crisis. The conduct of voters today shows that the ACN is their choice,” he said.

He added that the election had also gone to confirm the popularity of the ACN in the state, admonishing the electorate to rest assure that all the promises made by the party would be fulfolled.

Torchlights, candles to the rescue
As voting ended yeaterday afternoon, officials of LASIEC resorted to the use of candles and torchlight for collation, sorting and counting of votes.

Immediately voting ended at 3.00 p.m., officials started to do the collation and counting, but had some problems as the rain started in all parts of the state, while the effect of the rain led to poor visibility as the atmosphere became dark due to the cloudy environment.

This was further compounded by the Power Holding Company of Nigeria (PHCN) which failed to supply electricity during the exercise.

Due to this, officials had to resort to the use of candles, torchlights and rechargable lamps, while some residents came to the rescue of thses officials by providing them with small generating sets.

An official of LASIEC who did not want his name in print said they did not plan for a late announcement of results as they had planned to conclude everything before 6.00 p.m, adding that it was the unfriendly weather which suddenly made everywhere dark at 4.30 p.m. that made them to resort to the use of candles and torchlights.

Meanwhile, as of the time of filing this report, counting was still on, while power supply was yet to be restored.

Thugs snatch ballot boxes at Makoko
At Makoko, Yaba LCDA, suspected political thugs were accused of snatching two ballot boxes and upturning their contents inside the river.

Also, it was alleged in the area that the number of votes was more than the accredited voters.

PDP chieftain call for cancellation in Yaba LCDA
Calling for the cancellation of the election in the area, a chieftain of the PDP, Dr. Babatunde Pearse, said this became imperative going by the cases of irregularities recorded in the area.

Irregularities at Surulere, Ebute Metta, Bariga
At Surulere, Ebute Metta and Bariga, there were also reported cases of irregularities.

Shooting, ballot snatching mark exercise in Agege
Some people suspected to be thugs caused a stampede at a polling unit at Ward 3 in Agege Local Government Area of the state as they carted away ballot boxes after the people of the area had voted.

Sunday Tribune gathered that officials of LASIEC were about to start counting votes when the suspected thugs stormed the polling unit to snatch the boxes.

They were said to have shot into the air during the melee which forced LASIEC officials, including some of the voters who were waiting for the outcome of the poll, to scamper for safety.

Efforts to confirm the development from LASIEC yielded no fruit as of the time of going to the press.

Voters protes in Lagos Mainland
In another development, some registered voters in one of the polling units in Lagos Mainland refused to vote in protest against a chairmanship candidate who they said did not perform in office.

They claimed that the current chairman did not deserve re-election, based on his alleged non-performance, adding that they did not see what he actually did during the first term.

Opposition in early jubilation
Apart from the case of Eredo LCDA in Epe Local Government Area, opposition members in Somolu and parts of Badagry were observed jubilating in anticipation of favourable results.

Meanwhile, The local government election in the Lagos West Senatorial District was characterised by voter apathy.

At Ifako Ijaiye Local Government Area, many polling stations visited recorded low turn out of voters.

A Lagos State Independent Electoral Commission (LASIEC) official at Ward E, Fagba Junction, lamented the situation, saying it was unfortunate that people did not come out to vote.

According to the official, who gave his name as Gbenga, “we have been waiting here since 8.00 a.m., it is now 9.30 a.m., yet, only a few people have been accredited.”

It was further noted that the sit-at-home order by the state government was not fully complied with in the area as some traders in places like Agege, Abule Egba and Ogba were seen displaying their wares.

Also, some commercial motorcycle (okada) riders were seen ferrying passengers in these areas, while commercial buses were also seen plying the roads as early as 2.00 p.m.

There was also no voting at Agbelekale Ward 7 in Ijaiye Ojokoro Local Council Developmen Area (LCDA).

Not different in Ipaja/Ayobo LCDA

At Ipaja/Ayobo LCDA, voters turn out was low. Party agents and some party members were only loafing around the polling booths, while security officials were there idling away.

One of the party agents who identified himself as Tunji told Sunday Tribune that the number of voters that had voted could not be ascertained, owing to the system adopted by LASIEC.

He added that voters only came to vote, but were not keen about the result as it was the case with previous elections because, he alleged, many of the candidates were imposed by the party.

Generally, though, there were hardly skirmishes in Lagos West Senatorial District, a development ascribed to the presence of security officials.

Meanwhile, It was men of the Lagos Rapid Response Squad, a unit of the Nigeria Police, deployed to monitor the local government election that delivered a pregnant woman of a baby boy on Adeniran Ogunsanya Street, Surulere on Saturday.

The policemen abandoned their primary duties of providing security during the election to save the lives of one Mrs. Blessing Umar who was shouting for help as she rolled in the pool of her blood on the popular road.

Initially suspecting her to be mentally ill, the policemen, with some passersby, moved closer to the woman and found out that she was in labour.

Mrs. Umar, who hails from Calabar in Cross Rivers State was savely delivered of a baby boy after several hours of panting. She was taken to a nearby hospital for medical attention.

According to an eye witness who simply identified himself as Bolaji, Umar had been calling for help from Bode Thomas area where she was assisted and moved to the neighbouring Adeniran Ogunsanya Street before she later delivered the baby.

According to Bolaji, it was a sad experience looking at a woman undergoing pain of labour without the capacity to help her.

“We are labourers here, working in an uncompleted building, but we were helpless when we saw the condition of the lady. When she came, she was shouting for help. We asked her what happened, but she was too weak to respond clearly. When we saw her belly and blood, we understood her plight,” he said.

A medical practitioner who spoke to Sunday Tribune over the matter, Dr. Quadri Adebola, said the woman was delivered of the baby on the road, adding that it was a bit difficult to get out the placenta.

According to him, his hospital received a telephone call to assist a woman who was in labour along the road.

“We quickly rushed to the scene to assist the woman,” he said.

A revelation, however, came up when a resident who refused to mention her name disclosed that Umar was in the habit of giving birth to her babies on the road.

“This is not the first time Blessing would give birth on the street. At least, I can cite three times she gave birth in similar circumstance. But the funny thing is that we don’t know where she and her husband keep the babies,”the woman said.

Reacting, the purported husband, Mr. Umar, said he was helpless, adding that he could not carry his wife to the hospital because of lack of fund.

He said, “I don’t know where to get money to pay her medical bill.”

Umar, who is a labourer on Dauda Imam Street confirmed that he had been married to Blessing for 12 years and they had four children, adding that he had to move their four children away from his wife when she became mentally ill.

Meanwhile, Five people were arrested by the police for being in possession of already thumb-printed ballot papers in boxes as violencewas recorded parts of the state like Somolu , Agege, Obalende and Amuwo Odofin.

Four people were, in the afternoon, arrested around Onireke in Amuwo Odofin Local Government Area with four ballot boxes and a Ghana Must Go bag filled with already thumb-printed ballot papers.

As early as 9.00 a.m., there was violent protest around Obalende area as angry Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) members protested against what they described as attempts by the rulling party in the state to rig the election

Also, an unidentified resident of Somolu was arrested around 10.00 a.m. at Olokemeta Primary School with two ballot boxes and already thumb-printed ballot papers.

The suspect was unlucky as other members of his gang escaped, when policemen from Alade Police Station invaded the primary school where they were allegedly trying to stuff the ballot boxes with the ballot papers.

Serious tension enveloped Somolu Local Government Area as collation of results was moved to the local government secretariet, following the invasion of the collation centre by gunmen who shot sporadically into the air.

The image maker of the state police command, Samuel Jinadu, however, refused to comment on the arrested suspects, saying he had not been properly briefed by the divisional police officers in charge of the affected areas.

I am presently at ETI-OSA Council where ACN roundly lost several Council positions to PDP, Wale Adeniji fighting to be re-elected after 8 years of poor performance. lost to Babajide Obanikoro as of counting poll results yesterday night. the LAISEC Officials did the usual by running away rather than declaring the results and proclaiming the winner. this morning TVC (owned by Tinubu) annouces that Wale Adeniji won the Chairmanship for ETI-OSA LG, how can ACN loose Council positions and win the Chairmanship - did their voters love the incumbent ACN Chairman and hate the ACN Councillors -  shocked Why has Politics in Nigeria got to be about Cheating, Killing and Lying. We stand firm on yesterdays results and will not be moved by the failure and incompetence of LAISEC.

A policeman was arrested last night -thumb-printing ballot papers- an office in the ETI_OSA council and a council man was arrested for burying Ballot papers into a dug hole inside the office.

Sadly they are not - which is why the begging masses of Lagos State have realised that their future has been bought over the odd N200 - N1,000. ETI-OSA PDP Councillors won all their councils. two PDP Chairman Candidates have been killed and one critically injured. ACN make inciting comments of PDP heating the polity and TV Continental declaring ACN winners of the recent polls when LAISEC have not even counted. one day wishes of the people will come true

It was obvious that PDP won in Etiosa. Now ACN couldnt stomach it. From what Joe Igbokwe said and the way he was looking on Channels TV, they met more than they bargained for. It is obvious that ACN is not democratic enough, just bunch of criminals. Time will tell and they will fade away. People now know the difference that all this party, whether PDP or ACN are all power drunk.

Peaceful election as Lagosians vote council executives

Peaceful election as Lagosians vote council executives
On October 22, 2011 · In News

Lagos – Accreditation and voting began before 9 a.m. on Saturday in most parts of Lagos State for elections into its 20 local government areas (LGAs) and 37 Local Council Development Areas (LCDAs).

About 5000 candidates from 28 political parties are participating in the elections in which 57 chairmen and 376 councillors would be elected.

The most visible political parties include the ruling Action Congress of Nigeria (ACN), People Democratic Party (PDP), All Progressive Grand Alliance (APGA), All Nigeria People’s Party (ANPP) and Accord Party (AP).

The outgoing local council chairmen in the state are all of the ACN.

NAN correspondents in Epe, Badagry, Ikorodu, Lagos Island, Agege, Isolo, etc, report that as at 8 a.m., electoral officers had started distributing voting materials.

Some residents of Agbado Oke-Odo LCDA and Festac town in Amuwo Odofin council were at the polling booths as early as 8 a.m. but electoral materials did not arrive until between 8.30 a.m. and 9 a.m.

Policemen and party representatives were at the booths before 8 a.m.

Voting began at 10:30 at the polling Unit 2, Ward G3, Surulere where Gov. Babatunde Fashola would vote. The governor had yet to come out.

The state government restricted vehicular movement from 7 a.m. to 4 p.m. to ensure peaceful elections.

Hundreds of youths converted the empty roads to football pitches. The Orile-Mile 2 Road, the Agege Motor Road and the Lawanson Roads are among those turned into fields.

Security personnel were scarcely seen on the roads contrary to what obtained during the general elections in April.

Complaints of shortage and delay in the distribution of electoral materials have, however, continued to trail the conduct of the council poll in Badagry.

At Badagry Grammar School Polling Centre, only 100 ballot papers each were received for the chairmanship and councillorship elections, whereas registered voters were 700.

The same situation occurred at L.A Primary School Badagry where 100 polling officials were issued with 100 ballot papers for the 700 electorates registered

Alhaji Ajagbe Adejumo, a PDP leader in Badagry, said that the observed delay may demoralize their supporters from voting.

Ahmed Olabisi, LASIEC officer in Badagry, said the delay was due to refusal of the police to accompany voting materials from LASIEC office to the polling units.

At Odomola, Maforija and Odoselu communities in Eredo LCDA, Epe, voting was going on smoothly, even though NAN observed that the presence of policemen was scanty.

As usual, Aregbesola was in Lagos yesterday, trying to rig the elections there. The people on the street have seen through the whole sham and after being led out to support ACN on ethnically poisonous politics, the people have seen through the massive corruption. The result is massive let down and voter apathy, all this happening much less than a year into the current tenure.
There is something wrong with the average Nigerian politician, that their whole talent is put in the service of stealing.

I hope yesterday "unevent" in Lagos will open the eyes of NL's fake ethnically driven revolutionaries and callers for coups.

Fashola better take the bull by the horns and own that party. What clearer picture does he want? We the people will massively support him, better still, he can join the reborn PDP.

I saw Police and Solders at the Eti-Osa LGA shoting tear gas at protesters.

The rumor was that KORO(PDP) won the chairmanship sit for Eti-Osa LGA.

People are still waiting for the ballot boxes and electoral officer that disappeared when they realised that PDP won resoundingly.
The elections will be cancelled, the rigging has been ridiculously blatant.

when there was no free and fair elections at the federal and state levels yet we want such at the local level. Thats simply impossible. as far as i am concerned, everything boils down to the topmost top.

THE FACT REMAINS THAT ACN CLEARLY RIGGED THE ELECTIONS IN ALL FRONTS…, I WAS AT THE AGUDA POLLING BOOTH NEAR MY HOUSE AND THERE ACN LOST WOEFULLY….

BUT TO THE SURPRISE OF SOME PEOPLE (ME, I WAS NOT SURPRISED COS I EXPECTED ACN TO RIG) THE RESULTS GAVE IT TO ACN (WHO IS FOOLING WHO?)

IN BADAGRY, PDP WON CLEANLY…IN ETI-OSA PDP ALSO WON……… BUT BY THE TIME THE RESULTS ERE RELEASED BY THE LAISEC CHAIRMAN….(THAT SHAMELESS OLD BABA’)…, WE ALL HEARD THAT ACN HAS WON EVEYTHING….( I LAUGH IN SWAHILI grin grin grin)

AND TO IMAGINE THAT THE BABA ASKED THE PDP PEOPLE TO GO TO TRIBUNAL AFTER ANNOUNCING THOSE RUBBISH RESULTS…, (A BABA THAT SHOULD BE THINKING ABT HIS GRAVE AT HIS AGE; ACTIVELY RIGGING ELECTION WITH ACN CRIMINALS…)

BUT DO I FEEL SORRY FOR PDP NOT AT ALL………………THEY ARE ONLY BEING PAID BACK IN THEIR OWN COINS……THEY HAVE BEEN RIGGING EVERYTHING RIGEABLE SINCE TIME IMMEMORIAL……I JUST PITY THE ‘STUPID’ ELECTORATES WHO WENT TO VOTE AND COULD NOT DEFEND THEIR VOTES…. (SHAME ON YOU ALL!!!!) embarassed embarassed

AS FOR FASHOLA ND HIS CO TRAVELLERS IN ACN…THE MESSAGE HAS BEEN PASSED….(YOU CAN FOOL THE PEOPLE SOMETIME BUT YOU CANNOT FOOL ALL THE PEOPLE ALL THE TIME…BOB MARLEY)

WE WOULD WAIT FOR YOU WHERE IT MATTERS MOST (AT THE GOVERNORSHIP ELECTION)……………, …WE SHALL STRIKE THE SHEPHERD AND ALL THE SHEEP WOULD BE SCATTERED…. angry

EKO ILE…OYA TRY REFUTE THIS ONE,……OMO ALE!!!!

Eko_ile, Gbawe, seant - putting asides our political affiliations and perceived or proven bad character of political leaders. I want to ask you a few questions.
1: Did you participate actively or passively in the recent LGA Elections
2: What is your honest (non-biased) opinion of the performance of LASIEC Officials at the polling center you voted
3: ETI-OSA LG results are yet to be counted - LASIEC Officials walked out and have not collated the results till-date, yet Wale Adeniji has been declared the winner with poll results to boot. What is your view on this

I have never been passionately involved in any election than the recent LG elections in my entire political life. I am a card-carrying member of the PDP representing WARD L2. From Saturday till last night I have been returning each day to the Council offices to protect ballot papers that unidentified armed men purportedly from the SSS have tried to take away. Youths from Lagos Island arrived yesterday with machetes and guns, Senator Obanikoro was shot at and injured in the leg (lucky for him), fingers of a PDP member were cut and a representative of the Hausa Community was beaten to unconsciousness.

These events do not fit the picture you passionately paint online (and offline I assume), I was there first hand and the only reason I am grateful this morning is that I made it out alive.

I recognize that you are a long-standing member on NL whose political discussions indicate that you are a man of intellect and passion. I will also wish to implore you and fellow NL members who are active ACN party supporters/members to look at the matter of elections in new light. Positive performance is the most important value an Elected Public Official is Obligated to deliver to the people who voted him into power. I have lived in Ikoyi since 1995, I walked with Tai Solarin, Rioted with Sowore and Malcom Fabiyi in our Aluta days, and Pelted the Police with stones and kerosine-filled bottles trying to unseat Abacha. I was passionate about the NADECO Agenda and Tinubu was my hero-in-exile. It saddens me greatly that we have turned the opportunity to recover a great deal of years stolen by Military Dictatorship and Corrupt leadership. The LG Elections is the Grassroots Empowerment Engine, the real connection between the People and their Leaders at the State Level. I cannot speak for the performance of recently announced Chairmen and Councillor results, but I can say this for Ikoyi/Obalende Constituency, PDP won all Council seats and the Chairmanship fair and scare. I now understand the heart-ache that the cheated feel when injustice is dealt to them. Even if PDP were to go to court, the Lagos State Chief Justice will seemingly forget that ETI-OSA votes for which results were announced by the LASIEC Chairman are still yet to be collated.

Is this the future of elections in Lagos?
