₦‎30,000 Minimum Wage: Bayelsa Teachers Threaten Indefinite Strike by Paraman: 8:31am On Oct 16, 2023
The Nigeria Union of Teachers has threatened to commence an indefinite strike in public primary and secondary schools in Bayelsa over the N30,000 minimum wage and promotion arrears.

The News Agency of Nigeria reports that the union took the decision at an executive meeting on October 12, after an earlier three-day warning strike failed to compel the Bayelsa Government to act.

The teachers had given a 14-day ultimatum to the government and local councils to address the plight of teachers across the state or face industrial action.

The grievances, according to the NUT, include the inability of both state and local governments to implement the N30,000 minimum wage and effect promotion of primary school teachers in the state.

The union said teachers were meted with untold hardships due to the non-payment of promotion arrears to the teachers.

NUT expressed dissatisfaction with the government’s continuous negligence of the plight of teachers who played critical roles in the state, in spite of engaging them at different fora in futility.

The union said the attitude of the government had brought nothing but humiliation and frustration to primary and secondary school teachers in the state.

It said the 14-day ultimatum took effect from, October 13 after failure to address the issues within the limit of the ultimatum would force teachers in the state to go on strike.

The strike notice was ratified by the constituent eight local government branches of NUT in Bayelsa.

Signatories to the communique after the meeting included chairmen of LG branches of the union.

Meanwhile, Dr Gentle Emelah, Bayelsa Commissioner for Education, declined comments when contacted as he did not respond to telephone calls and messages requesting the government’s clarification.

NAN reports that schools in Bayelsa had vacated on August 29 due to an expected flood and are slated to resume on November 13.

How to move our Darling country forward, minimu wage-wise....

1. Abolish SECURITY VOTE in NIGERIA. Nigeria will pay N60,000 minimum wage comfortably.

2. a) Abolish CONSTITUENCY PROJECT FUNDS
b) Reduce number of ADVISERS to SENATE PRES(2), HOUSE SPEAKER(2), GOVs(4), PRESIDENT(5), VP(2)
c) Reduce current ALL Political Office Holders PAY CHEQUES by 51.5%, without exception
d) Do away with special remuneration to POLITICAL ADVISERS & PUBLIC SERVANTS e.g; Purchase of Private Vehicles, Houses, granting Govt paid Vacations, paying for 1st & Business Class Transportations, etc, etc...
e) Abolish payment of OVERSEAS MEDICAL BILLS for Political Office Holders.
f) Eliminate PRIVATE PRACTICE in public workforce
g) Eliminate participation of Public Workforce in Partisan Politics.
h) Institute EMPLOYMENT BY MERIT, and eliminate UNDEREMPLOYMENT.
i) Review and eliminate allocation of Govt paid POLITICAL AIDES & SUPPORT STAFF to Political Office Holders.

With (1) + (2) Nigeria would pay a minimum wageof N90,000 comfortably.......
(3, 4 and 5 To be completed on another thread)

God bless Nigeria
We will get there.......

Much as I do not engage people on this forum,
I have always read your comments on political matters and have no doubt that you're an APC person, which is not an offence.
We all can not support the same parties or have the same ideologies.
However, this your comment is the most non-partisan and practicable panacea I have read from you.
Will they do anything close to these suggestions?
I doubt.
God bless Nigeria.
THANKS for your kind words.
But , FYI,
We are not a party people @MANNA.
We are not a member of APC, (we swear on God's name.)
We vote for good people, no matter the political party they are in.

And yes,
God bless Nigeria 🇳🇬 and God bless you too ❤️
A better Nigeria all around is all we want @MANNA.

I join you in wondering. Truth is resources has a way to limit your brain power.

Some of them are lazy, always fighting for money and at the end of the day, can't do anything meaningful with it.

The whole Bayelsa state population is not up to Alimosho Local Government in Lagos State, yet they collect huge Federal allocation plus 13 percent oil derivation and security vote. Na this kind state NLC expect to pay their own imagination of N200K as minimum wage grin
