San Diego hosts major law enforcement convention

SAN DIEGO — Thousands of law enforcement personnel from around the world are in San Diego for the International Association of Chiefs of Police annual conference.

It's the first time since 2016 San Diego has hosted the event.

Organizers tell CBS 8 it’s the largest and most impactful law enforcement event of the year. It’s where they learn new techniques, as well as network with agencies from around the world.

The convention started October 12th and runs through October 17th.

Six hundred vendors have taken over the convention floors, showcasing the latest in law enforcement tools and technology. There are also classes covering a number of topics including the flux of migrants coming across our border, as well as the growing fentanyl crisis.

San Diego Police Department Assistant Chief Scott Wahl explained why this type of convention is so crucial.

“We learn from each other when we see innovative approaches that maybe we're not applying in one jurisdiction or one part of the country. That sharing of information, that networking, you bring in the vendors that are providing all of the latest technology out there - it really advances policing. It makes us more efficient, more effective in how we do this job.”

Assistant Chief Wahl says law enforcement agencies all over, including the San Diego Police Department are dealing with staff shortages, so a lot of what they're learning at the convention is based on how to combat crime with fewer officers.

San Diego will serve as host city again in 2034.

There are many side events to the Conference and yesterday, She attended one of such and it was as an absolute privilege to stand before the esteemed members of the National Organization of Black Law Enforcement Executives in the beautiful San Diego.

If the government of Anambra can send its people to come to Lagos and learn about the developmental patterns of Lagos as set by President Bola Tinubu and it is been executed by the preceding governors most especially in the area of water transportation. I don't think it is wrong for the Minister (Nigeria) and the IGP to also take some lessons from San Diego on how Policing and its operation is carried out.

I learnt the Minister and IGP also witnessed a live emergency response by the Police Corps when they received a distress call from a citizen. The way and manner the police acted upon receiving that call. How there was communication between the Police and other bodies involved and it was awesome.

We need such reforms in the Police and security sector of the country.

Police has to learn to respond swiftly when called. Not the one that there's robbery going on and they are asking what type of gun are the robbers using or they start blasting their Siren like one kilometre away so that the robbers will know they're coming and then they take off. Or the medicine after death approach which is coming after an hour when the criminals have done their work and left.

The police should learn from the best.

The citizens need to have trust in the efficiency of the Nigerian police.
The force needs serious reform and good orientation for it's members.
That's when peace can truly be achieved.

The most useless police force in the whole world....

Never seen a police force that defends the oppressors and oppress the poor.

Infact, Nigeria constitution is not for the poor.... Most times you will wonder if the poor are Non-citizens of this country.

The Nigerian Police should as a matter of urgency look into the menace of one chance robbers. Some people have taken it as a daily business.

Meanwhile,
I'm an experience driver in Lagos. I need a car to drive on uber/bolt for weekly remittance.
