This morning in Alaba Road, Baruwa, Ipaja, my mother-in-law had an unsettling encounter that serves as a stark reminder of the need for vigilance, especially as the holiday season approaches.

A man entered her store, seeking to purchase raw food items.

Impatient and in a hurry, he urged her to quickly package the goods he desired.

In a somewhat unusual turn of events, he requested to make an upfront payment of N100 for polythene bag.

My mother-in-law, unaware of the impending misfortune, collected the money and merged it with her substantial cash amounting to N10,000.

The man assured her he would return to complete the transaction, leaving as swiftly as he had arrived.

It was only when the stranger had vanished from sight that my mother-in-law inspected her purse, realizing with a sinking feeling that her N10,000 had mysteriously vanished.

This serves as a reminder that as the festive season approaches, instances of heinous deception and theft tend to rise.

In the midst of our daily activities, let us remain vigilant, exercising caution and discretion when dealing with unfamiliar faces and unfamiliar transactions.

The place of spiritual discernment can't be downplayed this period.

It's also essential to be mindful of unusual requests and take extra steps to safeguard our valuables.

Above all, in these times of uncertainty, let us also remember the power of prayer, seeking protection and guidance in all our endeavors.

May we all navigate the coming days with wisdom, discernment, and an unwavering commitment to our safety and well-being.
