I don't think there is any known formula to be
a successful godfather/leader for a very long time.The thing is the leader needs to be transparent to a vast majority of party members and leaders.The leader must try to be on the right side in any fight or quarrel with the governor, so that in the event the governor leaves him,he would still be very relevant politically.
