Lagos seals off Ajah market, demolishes illegal structures at jubilee bridge

The Lagos state government has sealed off the Ajah market and demolished illegal structures mounted by traders around the Jubilee bridge.

The joint operation was carried out by officials of the Lagos Waste Management Authority (LAWMA), Lagos State Environmental Sanitation Corps (LAGESC) and the environmental task force.

“Demolition of illegal street traders structures around the Ajah Jubilee bridge. The combined team of Lagos State Waste Management Agency, LAGESC and Environmental Task Force also sealed the Ajah market today Sunday 5th November, 2023 in pursuant of the State’s declaration of zero tolerance ‘War on Waste,” Jubril Gawat, senior special assistant to the Lagos governor on new media, wrote on his X page.

In the last couple of months, the state government has been ramping up the closure of markets over environmental infractions.

On October 23, the Lagos government cordoned off the Alaba international market in the Ojo LGA over poor environmental practices.

Tokunbo Wahab, Lagos commissioner for environment and water resources, said the market was “sealed up for poor waste disposal practices, failure to pay waste bills and gross environmental sanitation offences”.

Lagos on its way to becoming the cleanest city/state in Nigeria and to compete shoulder to shoulder with windhoek (Namibia), kigali(Rwanda) and Cape town(South Africa).

Good.

Lagosians are wayyy too Lousy, noisy and dirty.i wonder whether it takes the intervention of Government to maintain decent and clean public environment

You Will see food sellers washing plates on top of open suckaway, cooking and stepping on human feaces that I wonder how nothing irritates them.

How can people be living comfortably around an environment that is so stinking that it's almost choking that it takes force for them to clean up their environment.later they'll be playing Victim for their own irresponsibility

I can imagine how people will be crying in that market today. Lagos is full. Other states should create opportunities for their people.
