1) 99% customer satisfaction rating
2) increase in sales of products and/or services (year on year) consistently
3) A very high revenue per employee ratio

I agree with you that nothing is written in gold. But as a CEO or a business owner you probably want a scientific approach to the trial and error to maximize your result and minimize loss.
