Rethinking Infertility: Endometriosis, Not Menstrual Pain, As A Key Factor by Oliver0910(f): 10:38am On Nov 15, 2023
The link between menstrual pain and fertility has recently sparked widespread debate. Menstrual pain, characterized by cyclical abdominal discomfort around menstruation, can be severe enough to interfere with daily activities. There's a common belief that childbirth can alleviate this pain, but the real concern for fertility may lie with endometriosis, not just the pain.

Understanding Menstrual Pain: Primary vs Secondary Dysmenorrhea

Primary dysmenorrhea involves pain without underlying reproductive organ abnormalities, largely due to prostaglandins and is the most common type. Secondary dysmenorrhea stems from pelvic disorders such as adenomyosis, endometriosis, and pelvic inflammatory disease.

In the view of traditional Chinese medicine, menstrual pain is caused by either 'obstruction,' from emotional distress or dietary choices leading to blocked Qi and blood flow, or 'deficiency,' from illness or overexertion depleting the body's Qi and blood, affecting liver and kidney function.

Endometriosis, characterized by the presence of endometrial-like tissue outside the uterus, can disrupt ovulation and embryo implantation, potentially causing infertility. It may also lead to blockages in the fallopian tubes.

Menstrual Pain and Childbirth: The Reality

While some women report less menstrual pain post-childbirth, this is not a guarantee. Pain reduction after childbirth should prompt a medical check-up since it could signal underlying conditions like endometriosis, which can affect fertility.

Alleviating Menstrual Pain: Traditional and Modern Approaches

To reduce menstrual pain, one can apply heat or consume ginger and brown sugar water. Traditional Chinese medicine recommends moxibustion, herbal foot baths, acupoint patches, and herbal remedy Fuyan Pill. Avoiding cold foods and drinks and cooling environments after sweating can also help.

When to Seek Treatment for Menstrual Pain

Women should not wait for extreme pain to seek medical help. Symptoms like severe abdominal pain, restlessness, disruptions to daily life, accompanied by systemic signs like cold sweats, vomiting, or diarrhea, call for immediate medical attention.

Endometriosis occurs when endometrial tissue grows outside the uterus, often leading to pain and fertility issues. It's prevalent among women of childbearing age, emphasizing the need for awareness and timely intervention.
