NCC boss urges control of Internet content

DR. Eugene Juwa, the Executive Vice Chairman of the Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC), has advocated the control of content that appears on the internet. Juwah spoke with newsmen in Geneva, Switzerland, where he is attending the 2011 Expo of the International Telecommunications Union (ITU).

“There has to be some measure of control on content in a volatile political situation where messages, anonymous messages, are coming through internet and exacerbating this volatile situation; it cannot be allowed.’’ Juwah, who spoke against the backdrop of recent events in North Africa, said that regardless of who was in charge, it was necessary to have an authority in charge of the content of the internet.

“We must find a way to regulate it; whether it is left to the regulators to do or to government, or to the service providers to do – it has to be worked out, but there has to be control of content.’’ Juwah also spoke on the quality of the services which the GSM companies were rendering Nigerians, saying that only substantial investments could improve the situation. He said that although the networks were investing in improvement, they were still being hampered by legal requirements, especially on issues bordering on the environment.

I have a brilliant solution to Dr. Eugene Juwa's mental anguish over anonymous internet messages posted by disgruntled elements.   The good doctor could commit suicide right away, as a preventive measure that would guarantee a definitive end to the pain and frustration about which he currently shrieks.

Free flow of information is always a threat to people who have something to hide.
Volatile environment my foot.

I guess the events in North Africa was caused by the internet rather than the sit tight despots it helped in flushing away.

Is this a Freedom of The Press issue, or an Invasion of Privacy issue?

How does this affect us as Webmasters?

Would love to have your take on this.

Do you believe the goverment has a right to monitor your blog and FB activities and maybe prosecute you for saying your mind, if they feel its against National Security?

they cannot protect their own site yet they would censor us.

Of course we know who draws the iron curtain. We know where they will get help.

The Chinaman will show his hand.

Fellow Nigerians. The Great FireWall of Nigeria is about to be built.

This is just the beginning.

they dont even have the capacity to do such, their level of intellectual mediocrity never ceases to amaze me,

how can people who find it impossible to put in place constant electricity with technology that has been around for ages seek to censor the usage of another

technology whose very existence is based on constant innovation, and change, with all the proxies, tunnels, vpns around?, methinks the minister is just talking so as to appear politically correct, if on the other hand they are serious about this, that means they want to embezzle millions, nay, billions of naira because they will continue pouring money into a hole that is getting deeper everyday, one that is impossible to fill,

A thought must be paid to the safety of Nigerian children's on the Internet. Children's are gaining more access to the Internet in Nigeria, from school and from home, and there are some problems that need to be considered, such as the "risk that a child may be exposed to inappropriate material of a intimate or violent nature." Only pornographic websites should be censored in Nigeria.
Re: Internet Censorship In Nigeria - Nairaland Is Endangered by JUO(m): 7:56pm On Oct 30, 2011
the ones u already blocked is not enough? e.g tagged.com, singlesnet.com e.t.c. is easy for them to do. all they need is to list all the sites and give it the isp,s in nigeria and it will be added to their server. one day na ony day ,
