In the heart of Nigeria, Kogi State University, once a beacon of academic excellence and pride for the state, now stands as a testament to the disheartening neglect and dilapidation that has befallen its essential assets. Among these, the student hostels, once vibrant and bustling with life, now lie in ruins, bearing witness to the lack of maintenance culture perpetuated by the Kogi State government.

The Economic Potential of Student Hostels:

Student hostels are not merely places of residence; they are also valuable assets with the potential to generate revenue for the university and contribute to the economic development of the state. These facilities, when well-maintained and properly managed, can serve as a significant source of income for the institution. Unfortunately, in Kogi State University, this potential is being squandered due to the government's failure to prioritize maintenance.

The student hostels, once teeming with life and energy, now present a stark picture of neglect and decay. Crumbling facades, leaky roofs, and inadequate sanitation facilities are now the norm. This decline not only affects the living conditions of the students but also reflects poorly on the reputation of the university. Prospective students and their parents may be discouraged by the sorry state of the infrastructure, leading to a potential decline in enrollment.

The root cause of this dilapidation lies in the lack of a robust maintenance culture within the Kogi State government. Maintenance is not merely a short-term expense; it is a long-term investment in the sustainability and functionality of infrastructure. Unfortunately, the government's failure to prioritize regular maintenance has resulted in the rapid deterioration of the university's assets.

The deplorable condition of the student hostels has a direct impact on the well-being and academic performance of the students. Inadequate living conditions can contribute to stress, health issues, and a generally unsupportive learning environment. Students, who are the lifeblood of any educational institution, deserve better. The neglect of their living quarters reflects a lack of commitment to their overall welfare.

Beyond the immediate impact on students, the neglect of these assets has economic consequences for the state. Student hostels have the potential to generate revenue through accommodation fees, but the current state of affairs discourages students from choosing Kogi State University. This, in turn, affects the financial health of the institution and hampers its ability to provide quality education.

The disheartening and dilapidating condition of Kogi State University's assets, particularly the student hostels, is a reflection of the government's lack of commitment to the well-being of its students and the economic potential of the institution. Urgent attention and investment in maintenance are required to reverse this trend, revitalize the university's reputation, and harness the economic benefits that well-maintained student hostels can bring. It is time for the Kogi State government to recognize the value of its educational institutions and take proactive measures to ensure their sustained growth and success.

Low standards from the customers and the institutions. I wonder how much they charge to live in this filthy environment?
