Tribalism already existed before 1978 - it led to the civil war. Tribalism is older than Nigeria.

Not sure how accurate this is.

It was Buhari who cancelled free feeding for Students, as then most if not all students were southerners. If you remember that the North does not need qualifications to get jobs, they get automatic jobs & promotions based on quota. This has led to the North not being interested in education till date.

So now while the southerners will score highly & not get admission, promotion or a job.
The Northerner simply has to attend to get admission, promotion or a job.
This has led & remains the north's Achilles heel for progress.

Hence Buhari hated the way Southerners were fed & cancelled free feeding.

Yep but not up to this level, I still remember Abiola election, there was no talk about tribe unlike now that it is at the forefront.

Unfortunately, today, the nation is too divided along ethnic lines to even agree on whether there is hardship or not.
If you say the country is hard, somebody else will quickly counter you that you're against his kinsman,, even when he himself is obviously suffering too.
Nigerian politicians are the luckiest in the world
