I can understand building Public Housing for President, Governors and their Vice. Barracks for Police, Army and Navy.

Why not build public houses for the poor and working class like Jalande?

Under no circumstances should anyone confuse this development other than what it really is: selective patronage.

It is a system of guilt tripping a state institution with the intention of making it subservient to those who have now become its benefactors.

They are now fulfilling part of what they agreed before the PEPT proceedings.

Wike did it in Rivers, Tinubu in Lagos and they have now brought this apparent state capture to the center.

Congratulations Nigeria, you are now captured.

Remember that the buildings and facilities will still be in place long after BAT and Wike have gone. They're necessities for the development of institutions and in this case the judiciary.

Give the judiciary their rightful autonomy and cease these jokes.

So Presidents and governors deserve housing but Judges who are paid poorly yet determine the fate of the nation don't deserve housing? Do you know that no judge earns up to 1 million naira per month? What am I saying? The average pay for judges is probably around 500k with senior magistrates earning less even as inflation soars. Let's be serious.

It seems that some of us have not really understood what the government is. The government has no business building houses for state functionaries. We also have to look at the macro and micro effects of this policy. So you built houses, furnished them, and handed them over to judges to live in. Now what? It's important to remember that houses deteriorate and need regular maintenance, which Nigeria and Nigerians often fail to do.

So, how about building a responsive and responsible civil service like we had before this crop of rent-seeking politicians happened to us?. Pay workers at all levels a responsible living wage. Let them go to the banks and take out mortgages to build homes for themselves.

They will maintain it properly because it is their and their children's inheritance, and the micro and macro effects of this investment and related activities are huge and very positive for the economy of the country.

Governance must trickle down to all citizens, regardless of class. What we are witnessing is selective patronage of those they use and will use in the near future. A clear prerequisite for state capture.

There is absolutely nothing wrong with the government building and maintaining quarters for state functionaries. It is in fact prudent to do so since commercial house rent will come at a premium and will always increase, making it far costlier over the long run, whereas government-owned quarters have been paid for once and for all and will only require maintenance. It's a more pragmatic approach so far as the facilities are well maintained, and all that is required is the allocation of a budget to that, or for allocatees to maintain them on their own.

Your opening statement has no nexus on the following arguments, btw, since you failed to provide your own definition of government in a way that explains why the government has no business building basic facilities for its officers.

It's also not clear what governance trickling down to all citizens has to do with the post. Are you suggesting that until the government builds houses for all citizens it shouldn't build for high-ranking judicial officers?? If not, do clarify what your point is here, in relation to the general subject of housing for judicial officers.

You are perfectly entitled to your opinion. Unfortunately, that does not make it relevant, nor does it address the genuine concern I raised.

Now, I'm not sure if you really understood what I wrote, either that or you are engaging for the sake of argument. Clearly, your argument is based on your experience as a Nigerian with the mindset that has kept the country economically immobile. Again, the state has no business building houses for its employees. Yes, even judges are government employees.

Your argument that free market housing is more costly fails on two counts:

1. The money used to build these houses did not fall from the sky. Most of it is loans, which must be repaid with enormous interest, or a direct charge on the state's investment budget, which immediately reduces what is available for interest-bearing investments.

2. It robs the free economy of scope and immediate fiscal input.

And we are talking about houses that are eventually sold to the occupants at a very tiny fraction of their real market value. This is the system, you know it, and it is a loss to the country and its people.

Understand this, Nigeria is not a welfare state and never has been. People here shout โ€œinternational best practicesโ€ all day long. What are international best practices?.

Building houses for corrupt government officials is definitely not one of them. It is not doing your very weak economy any favors. What it does is perpetuate the well-known system of selective patronage, as I said, with the intent to corrupt.

Now tell me, where does a U.S. president live after his term in the White House?. The same as governors?. Governors do not get houses in their state capitals and another in Washington DC with cars, drivers, and other domestic staff to boot. This is the Nigeria story. In a country where most people survive on less than one dollar per day.

A U.S. president, governors, and other top government officials retire to privately purchased or rented accommodations. Yes, security details are provided to them as appropriate, but they are expected to live on their measured pensions, unlike the well-known Nigerian absurdity you seem to be propagating here.

I have every reason to suspect that you live in Nigeria and are therefore amenable to a system of gratification for service that has rendered the society comatose. I understand your desire to defend it. You may even be a net beneficiary.

My recently retired next-plot neighbor was a circuit court judge. That's your equivalent of an appellate judge, and we've been neighbors for 16 years. He bought his property and paid it off with a 30-year mortgage. He told me.

There's no acceptable reason to sequester people under the guise of federal housing just so you can keep track of them. That's what military barracks are for, but in this case, unfortunately, to purchase loyalty.

Judges are public servants like any other. Compensate them appropriately for what they do and hold them accountable for upholding their oath of office if you're concerned about their integrity.

This is what they do in functioning societies, which unfortunately Nigeria is not.

Please note that this is not an intellectual debate. In the unlikely event that you need one, just say so.
