The ruling African National Congress (ANC) in South Africa has reignited calls to rename Sandton Drive after Leila Khaled, an activist and member of the resistance movement Popular Front for the Liberation of Palestine.

The ANC in the Greater Johannesburg region launched the petition this week and picketed outside the US Consulate on Thursday.

The petition has been supported by ANC secretary-general Fikile Mbalula, who posted a video on his X account, saying the petition was supported by Luthuli House (ANC headquarters).

“We support the renaming of Sandton Drive to Leila Khaled Drive, not yesterday, today,” he said.

Khaled, 79, is recognised around the world as the first woman to hijack a passenger aeroplane and the face of female Palestine militancy and resistance.

In 1969, she hijacked a passenger jet flying to Tel Aviv from Rome and diverted it to Damascus. There were no injuries.

Other people championing the call include Thuthukile Zuma, the daughter of former president Jacob Zuma, who has been calling for people to sign the petition.

On Thursday, the ANC Greater Johannesburg Region, with members sporting Palestinian keffiyehs, hosted a picket outside the US Consulate, demanding the City of Joburg implement its Council resolution to rename Sandton Drive Leila Khaled Drive'.

“The decision was taken five years ago, and we urge the city to expedite the implementation of this important resolution not only in honour of Leila Khaled but in solidarity with the struggle of the people of Palestine,” said ANC Joburg regional secretary Sasabona Mangaye.

According to a September 2023 report in the SA Jewish Post, Joburg's Transport MMC Kenny Kunene, who is also the deputy president of the Patriotic Alliance, which is pro-Israel, will not allow the renaming to take place.

“I disagree strongly with the renaming of Sandton Drive to Leila Khaled Drive, and the Patriotic Alliance will never vote for it,” Kunene told the publication, adding that local heroes were more deserving.

In December 2018, the ANC, supported by the Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF), tabled a motion in the Johannesburg Council for the renaming of Sandton Drive to Leila Khalid Drive.

At the time, EFF Joburg region chairperson Musa Novela said the city of gold had a responsibility to stand with the people of Palestine and highlight their plight.

“It's our duty to stand in solidarity with the people of Palestine against the oppressive state of Israel.”

The Democratic Alliance (DA), which was running the city with the backing of the EFF and others at the time, shot down the motion, and its Community Development MMC, Nonhlanhla Sifumba, said the motion lacked substance as the name Khaled held no meaning for the people of Joburg.

She said at the time that street names should promote a sense of ownership and the character of the city as per its street-naming policy.

“In this case, this motion fails to meet any of the requirements.”

The motion was reportedly adopted.

In October, Khaled, on her most recent visit to South Africa, delivered the keynote address at the Third International Dilemmas of Humanity Conference, which was hosted by the National Union of Metalworkers of South Africa in Joburg.

Over 14,500 people have been killed in Gaza since Israel began it's bombardment.

The Palestinian death toll in the Gaza Strip has risen to over 14,500 - including the massacre of 6,000 children and 4,000 women - since the outbreak of the Hamas-Israel conflict on October 7.

You want to honour a terrorist that hijacked a passenger plane undecided

This "South Africa and Terrorism" romance won't end well.

I sympathize with them in advance.

In Palestine they have a place named al-abeed.

A neighbourhood where black descendants of slaves reside.

South Africans attack African migrants under operation dudula, so I'm not surprised that they are teaming up with Arabs who also have anti black sentiments.

Stop siding with racists and terrorists. Instead of renaming a street in SA after a foreigner, why not work on changing the colonial name of South Africa to a more indigenous one?

Don't be daft, go ask the US what good the statue of Lady Liberty is doing or ask Brazil what good Christ the Redeemer statue has.

There's no more perfect name for SA since its a geographical location and has the word Africa in it.

Are you done defending Jews, who actually killed the Jesus you pray to?

I don't share any religious sentiments so I don't agree with Christ the Redeemer statue either. The statue of liberty can be perceived as art.

It doesn't matter, it's a name given by colonialists and Africa doesn't mean anything in any sub-saharan african language.

Going by your logic, should I assume you're a Muslim?

Lol, the statue of liberty was actually a gift to the US by France, the same way the statue of Mandela was a gift from the city of Johannesburg to the people of Palestine. Google the purpose of both statues and you'll stop asking silly questions like what good are they doing.

You should concern yourself more with why your largest city Lagos has a Portuguese name, and worry less about what SA is called - the people of SA are not complaining.

I don't have to be muslim to care about the wellbeing of Palestinians. Are you supporting Israel because you're christian? Lol, i hate to break it to you but Israelis are Jews, not christians.

Are Palestinians terrorists or freedom fighters? They been under Israeli occupation and apartheid for 80 years now. How else should they gain their freedom? Their retaliation shouldn't be labelled as terrorism - Israel itself are terrorists disguised as a democracy.

And who is a Palestinian? There has never been a nation or state called Palestine in history. What are the names of some of the past Kings or rulers of Palestine? Or the name of their capital city or cities?
You can't answer any of those questions because no such thing has ever existed
All the major cities in that area have Hebrew names like Jerusalem, Bethlehem, Nazareth, Hebron etc and Hebrew is the language of the Jewish people.
The Jews were offered land in East Africa, but as principled people, they rejected it because the only land they wanted is the land of their ancestors.
Your ignorance is appalling.

What freedom? The land does not belong to them and if they insist on any nonsense they will be dealt with like the born criminals they are.

Your lack of reading skills is even more appalling - when did i mention biblical history because i clearly stated 80 years, which dates back to the 1940s.

The whole world has agreed there should be a two-state solution to attain peace in that region and yet Israel continues to grab land meant for a future Palestinian state. And then you all wake up like dummies on some October 7 Saturday crying terrorism when all along Israel had been terrorizing Palestinians. Nonsense!

Imagine the bile being spewed by this xenophobe.

First of all, the Hamas you support made a speech in SA few days ago, where they once again rejected a two-state solution. So it would appear you're living in delusion. You should be the one paying more attention to and improving your reading culture.

Secondly, if you care about the wellbeing of Palestinians, you should tell your terrorist friends to channel their aid money into building a stable and growing economy for Gaza, and not looking for weapons to kill Israeli civilians.

Lastly and more importantly, SA has been carrying on as if they can do without their African brothers. They kill Zimbabweans for flimsy reasons, kill Nigerians too for other flimsy reasons and so on and so forth. African governments are mostly terrible at governance that they are too busy quenching fires at home. Thus they have paid little attention to SA.

If Nigeria decides to take on SA, even with our dysfunctional system and terrible leadership, we would easily bring the useless ANC to their knees. From MTN, Multichoice etc to ShopRite and others, your foolish ANC officials will queue up in Abuja to beg.

Focus on that, and leave Israel alone. They are not your enemy. When push comes to shove, they will be the ones protecting you from terrorists like Hamas.

So the people who have a continuous identity and attachment to the land from thousands of years ago are the colonisers, but the ones whose identity dates back to 80 years are the real owners?
Thank you for proving just how stupid the average South African is. No wonder a dimwit rapist like Jacob Zuma was able to succeed in South African politics.

The Internet is the worst place for the exhibition of ignorance and stupidity because the internet never forgets!
Imagine making this type of blunder when the truth about who is rejecting the two state solution is well known to all the world, smh.
Your Palestinian dimwits should buy as many body bags and dig as many graves as they can because death is the only thing that awaits them if they insist on terrorism.
