Anambra NUJ commends Umeh's intervention in Lagos demolitions

A congress of the Nigeria Union of Journalists ( NUJ), Anambra State Council, has commended the Senator representing Anambra Central Senatorial District, Chief Victor Umeh, for wading into the demolition of some property in Lagos.

The congress stated this in a communique for its November Congress jointly signed by its council chairman, Odogwu Emeka Odogwu,PhD, Secretary Comrade Aloysius Ofodile and
Comrade Okechukwu Onuegbu(Assistant Secretary)

Recall that Umeh who is the Chairman Senate Committee on Diaspora and NGOs, and Vice Chairman Senate Committee on Land, Housing and Urban Development visited the headquarters of the Federal Housing Authority (FHA) in Abuja to discuss the fate of owners of houses in Abule-Ado Areas of Festac, Lagos state which had been under demolition.

Also concerned about the huge losses and the outcry over the ongoing demolitions in Abule-Ado, Umeh had earlier intervened in the Senate and also engaged the Minister of Housing and Urban Development, Arc. Ahmed Musa Dangiwa through the Senate Committee on Land, Housing and Urban Development (where he is Vice Chairman) on the need to halt the demolition exercise and to conduct proper investigation.

Commenting on the development, the NUJ congress in its communique said,"Congress commended efforts of some Anambra representatives in the federal legislature for standing up for justice.

" Mentioning specifically the motion by Hon Lilian Orogbu (representing Awka North and South Federal Constituency) on the non-payment of salaries of some staff members of Nnamdi Azikiwe University Awka and the intervention by Senator Victor Umeh (representing Anambra Central) in the issue of house demolitions at Abule-Ado in Lagos State.

The congress also appealed to Anambra State Government to ensure that people did not lose their property and valuables to touts, cultist, street urchins and other hoodlums in communities such as witnessed at Iyowa-Odekpe and at other places across the state.

The Congress commended the state government under Prof Chukwuma Charles Soludo for the initiative to establish old people's homes to care for the elderly in the state.

It, however, cautioned that people should not abandon their aged ones because of existence of such homes.

The congress also appealed to well-to-do members of society to ensure that they remember the less privileged ones during the yuletide and try to put smiles on their faces in a manner that would respects their dignity as against mere using them for public shows.
