What Are Igbo Customs On Divorce? by vicoson(m): 4:27am On Dec 06, 2023
I have been married to an Igbo lady for 13 years. She is from Imo state. Her character is appalling. I have reported her several times to her family but they keep defending her. Some time in 2021, I intercepted an email correspondence between her and a pornography company demanding payment for a sample she performed. I confronted her immediately and she told me that someone introduced her into it but she gets someone else to perform those samples while she pays the person. I did not ask further questions. I just forwarded the messages to my inbox. The next moment, she wiped her phone clean and said nothing till we separated about 6 months later.

The problem now is that, after alerting her people for a peaceful dissolution of the marriage, it took them almost two weeks to inform me that I should seek a legal means of obtaining a divorce as Igbo customs and tradition forbids it. Please house, advise. We did not register the marriage in any court but wedded in a church after traditional marriage.

So, na her people you marry and not the woman in question? I ask since you went to "her people" to seek the dissolution of marriage instead of the woman herself. Shey "her people" no wan give you divorce naw... wetin you wan do? lipsrsealed

Anyways, so long as you are unwilling to engage the woman who was wife to you for those 13 years, and demand you both reach an agreement on how you both go your separate ways, I don't see any other way for you to go about this. undecided

You said nothing about children?
I've read on here so many times and told by Igbo friends that Igbo custom is, once they return the bride price. If they want the marriage to continue they simply will refuse to return bride price. Igbos in the house, am I right? Where art thou??

Funny enough, I did not pay the bride price at the time of TM. I refused to even pay again due to her waywardness. The father keeps reminding me whenever there is an issue. I just ignore him.

That's what marks it a cooked-up story. No one would tell that story without mentioning the children and their welfare and how that fits into the whole scenario

My brother, stories like this, if true, invariably start thus: "My wife and I have been married for 13 years. We have four children together, two boys and two girls..."
Your wife's name is Pauline?

What is your problem? Is your sister's name Pauline?

You obviously want the story to be fake. You can't just believe that people can be so useless and stupid.

What do you really want? I gave you proof, and you are bitching about it. Do you know me or is it only one person that answers Pauline? Anyone who knows me obviously knows about our story even on this forum. Do you know for how long I have been vilified? She should also start answering questions. By the way, her family have seen worse messages than these. Let me not blow up this forum if you continue to push me.

I am not shouting FAKE or anything at all. I only pointed out some things about your story that tend to go with fake stories.

I checked out your profile. You've been registered since 2012 and I saw your earlier thread.
I don't think the story is totally made-up and is actually front-page worthy for wider input.

I don't understand you.

Do you want her father to return a bride price you didn't pay or you want a magistrate you didn't meet for a legally binding marriage to separate you and your wife??

Sorry, but that charge and bail pastor you contracted to join you and your wife without paying her bride price has only wasted your time and resources.

You don't have a marriage as the Nigeria Laws confer no legal status on cohabiting couples. There's absolutely nothing to separate here, however, a lawyer can help with the welfare of your kids. The Matrimonial Causes Act made a provision for such.

You are a very funny man, sha. You spent and did everything except the actual marriage. I bet you bought traditional wedding dresses, hired a photographer, a baker, an MC, contracted a fake pastor from an unlicensed church, bought a suit and wedding gown, cooked plenty of food, etc. You did all of these only to ignore the main things: bride price and registry? grin

If you didn't pay bride price, there's no marriage here even if you spent 1 million on Traditional marriage.
If you didn't wed in the LGA Secretariat or court theres also no legality .
So there's no customary and no legal marriage therefore means both of you are cohabitating.

You had a traditional marriage and didn't her pay bride price and you are still assuming you were traditionally married? Your story don't add up!

By igbo culture you were merely co-habiting, if you has paid her bride price, all you need to do is go with some of your relatives to see her family for the refund of the bride price and that ends the marriage.

You were never married to her traditionally thus no refund, with the marriage certificate issued by the Church you wedded in, your lawyer can take it up from there.

My brother, she was handed over to my father. They asked him both during TM and church wedding if I settled everything which he affirmed. I settled most of the items in the list but I didn't pay the BRIDE PRICE. Why I brought this here is to know if it is necessary I go to her place to inform them that their daughter is no longer with me or I should just face my front. I don't want a situation I will be called later regarding her whereabout.

Go with your relatives as witnesses to inform her family the union has ended and you are no longer involved in her life, after which you should engage a lawyer to have your Church marriage dissolved in court, based on the assumption that the Church you wedded in was licensed to officiate weddings.
