THE SPIRIT. by Maynman: 6:27am On Dec 12, 2023 |
What is The Spirit? If you ask a Christian, the average response might be that God is Spirit. But what exactly is the Spirit, and why is it attributed to God? This will be a somewhat lengthy discussion that will be divided into two or three threads, addressing: Where does the spirit come from? Who sent it? Other names for the spirit. Relationship between the sender of the spirit and the spirit. What does the spirit do? Finally, what is the Spirit? Jesus began his ministry at the age of 30 after being baptized and receiving the Spirit (Luke 3:21-23). 32' Jesus was about thirty years old when he began his public ministry. I'll commence with John the Baptist; he's in the best position to discuss where the Spirit came from and who sent it. He was the sole witness to Jesus' testimony, and even Jesus affirmed this John 5:32-33: 'John bore witness to the truth, and you sent to him.' According to the Gospel of John, John the Baptist tells us about the initial descent of the Spirit from Heaven, to which he bore witness. John 1:32: " And John testified, saying, 'I have seen the Spirit descending as a dove out of heaven, and He remained upon Him.' The outcome of this event, when the Spirit descended upon Jesus and stayed with Him, resulted in His identification as the Son of God, chosen to baptize with the Holy Spirit (John 1:33). "Upon whom you shall see the Spirit descending and abiding on Him, He is the One baptizing with the Holy Spirit." Subsequently, the ONLY NAME of the Son of God is Holy Spirit, not Jesus, Son of Mary. John 5:43: Jesus mentioned, 'I have come in my Father's name, and you do not accept me...' John 12:28: 'Father, glorify your name...' John 17:12: 'While I was with them, I protected them and kept them safe by that name you gave me... John 17:26: And I have made Your name known to them and will continue to make it known.' Note: In John 1:29, John was baptizing at Bethabara beyond the Jordan. During the 1st century AD, the Nasurai inhabited the regions around Jerusalem and the River Jordan. Baptism (Maṣbuta) necessitates Living Water, which refers to fresh, natural, flowing water known as mia hayyi. https://mandaepedia.miraheze.org/wiki/Nasoraeans In John 3:25, when John's disciples approached him regarding the man he bore witness to, he assured them not to be surprised. He emphasized that the testimony Jesus received is from heaven, and he would only testify to what he had heard and seen. John 3:33: He testifies to what he has seen and heard, but no one accepts his testimony. John emphasized that Jesus' words and testimony all originated from God, as Jesus had been bestowed with the Spirit from above. John 3:34: For the one whom God has sent speaks the words of God, for God gives the Spirit without limit. Jesus himself affirmed that the testimony he received is from heaven. John 5:34: But I receive not testimony from man.' John 5:37: And the Father himself, which hath sent me, hath borne witness of me......" Jesus used specific names to refer to the Spirit he received. He called it the Word, Testimony, Eternal Life, Deeds, Living Water, Bread, Flesh and Blood, Teaching, Commandment, and Counselor. John 6:63: ".....The words I have spoken to you--they are full of the Spirit and life." John 7:37-39: "......When he said 'living water,' he was referring to the Spirit, who would be given to everyone believing in him". John 14:26: "But the Counselor, the Holy Spirit, whom the Father will send in my name....." He consistently emphasized that his words, teachings, and commandments were not his own but originated from the Father who sent him. John 14:24: "...... And the word that you hear is not mine but the Father's who sent me" John 7:17: So Jesus answered them, “My teaching is not mine, but his who sent me." John 12:49-50: I have not spoken on my own authority; but the Father who sent me gave me a command, what I should say and what I should speak. And I know that his command is everlasting life. Therefore, whatever I speak, just as the Father has told me, so I speak. John 17:14: "I have given them your word....." John the Baptist also testified that his teachings came from Heaven/Above. John 3:27: John answered and said, 'A man can receive nothing, unless it is given to him from heaven.' John 3:32: He testifies to what he has seen and heard, yet no one accepts his testimony. John 3:34: 'For the one whom God has sent speaks the words of God...'" Now that we understand the Spirit descended from Above/Heaven and was sent by God, we can examine verses outside John the Baptist's account that also shed light on where the Spirit originated and who sent it. John 3:13: "No one has ascended into heaven except he who descended from heaven, the Son of Man" John 3:16: For God so loved the world that he gave his one and only Son...." John 6:33: "For The Bread of God is he who has descended from Heaven and gives life to the world.” John 6:38: For I have come down from heaven not to do my will but to do the will of him who sent me. John 6:50: this is the bread that comes down from heaven...." John 6:58: "This is the bread which came down from heaven....." Note: The Scripture/Bible is not the word of God that came down from Heaven. Femi Aribisala put it nicely "Ask a Christian a question about Jesus, and he might answer with a quotation from Paul. But who tells us Paul speaks for Jesus? Why do we need Paul to speak for Jesus when Jesus speaks for himself?" https://www.premiumtimesng.com/opinion/143425-the-word-of-paul-is-not-the-word-of-god-1-by-femi-aribisala.html?tztc= Even Jesus had a witness, which was significant for his own ministry. John 1:6-7: There was a man sent from God whose name was John. He came as a witness to testify concerning that light, so that through him all might believe. Who is Paul "the apostle" witness??
