He was more than “above average” but you are right about him being overrated. While others were winning league trophies and champions league, he was wandering in Bolton at the “height” of his career. Kanu, with or without, the heart problem is the only one that can be mentioned with the likes of Touré, Eto’o, Essien, Drogba, Pele, and Weah.

The writer got it all mixed up in his writing.

While acknowledging that CAF APOTY started In 1992 he still went to credit Abedi Pele as the APOTY of 1993 whereas CAF APOTY 93 is Rashidi Yekini.

CAF started organizing APOTY awards in 1992 and decided to go with France football's choice which is Pele.

From 1993, CAF decided to make their own choice away from France football and yekini was crowned for that year.

The common assumption that Abedi Pele won 3 APOTY is nothing but a myth.

Cameroon mightily represented. Winning out all the three spots in 2000. Thomas N'kono was truly a goalie par excellence. Winning the France-Afrique Ballon D'or thrice. Went on to represent Cameroon in the Italy 1990 World Cup that saw the Indomitable Lions come out as the first African Team to reach the Quarter Finals

France Football, the organisers of the Ballon d’Or, organised the Ballon d’Or Africain from 1970 till 1994 and the winner of that award was recognised as the African Footballer of the Year. In 1995 the magazine opened its main Ballon d’Or award to non-European players and discontinued the Ballon d’Or Africain.

CAF began awarding the African Footballer of the Year prize in 1992 and it continues to do so till this day.

A very informative piece.
CAF (especially under Issa Hayatou) started the open manipulation of the awards to suit its whims and caprices in 1993.
Abedi Pele was clearly the best African footballer in 1993 after having been the best player in the Champions League and playing crucial role to help Marseille defeat AC Milan in the final.
But there was huge noise and influence by some Nigerians e.g. Abiola for the award to be given to a Nigerian (Rasheed Yekinni) because Nigeria has just qualified to the world cup and Yekini scored the highest goals in the qualifiers.
So CAF started amending/manipulating the criteria in order to suit which player they wanted to give the award in a particular year. That is why there has been so many fraud in the awards since then.

Mustapha Hadji was also given the award when most people believed Okocha should have won it.
They manipulated and gave it to for El Hadji Diouf (Senegal) in 2000/2001 when Osei Kuffour (Ghana) was the best African player after having won the treble with Bayern Munich (UCL, Europa, and League).
They manipulated it for Yaya Toure (CIV) to win when Mikel Obi was clearly the best player after having won the UCL, Europa and Premiership.
They also manipulated and gave it to Samuel Eto'o Fills in a year that he did not win anything major.. etc

What did Okocha do in 1998 that was better than whatever Hadji did? Keep in mind that impact matters when giving out this awards.

If you are the lady in your DP, you don't need to go into football. That sport will drain your beautiful body, making you look like alika (a lanky person). By the way, typically, a team needs a maximum of 22 players for a tournament. In a country of over 100 million females, it will take the grace of God for anyone to be selected among the 22 players. It gets even worse if you play for a local team that is terribly neglected by the government. So, stay where you are and make sure you are the best of what you currently do.

The factors you mentioned can not primarily be responsible for the masculine shape of our female players. Although we limited info about the nutrition because we don't know much about them on a personal level. As a professional, they are expected to train hard regardless. Clean environment? Do you mean they stay in an unclean environment ? What can we say about beautiful ladies with nice physique who doesn't play football.

Japhet N'Doram and Tabitha Chawinga.

Stories about some of the people in the list.

We often used Japhet N'Doram as an example of someone that would never win the African Footballer of the Year title. He scored a lot of goals for Nantes and Monaco, but he was from Chad which never qualified for the African Nations Cup or the World Cup. That was his handicap. He could work magic at his club in Europe, but he would never be able to replicate it at major international tournaments.

Surprisingly he came second in 1997.

The present day equivalent (on the ladies side) is Tabitha Chawinga. She is a phenomenal striker and has scored a lot of goals in China and Scandinavia. She was the highest goal scorer in Italy last season (with Inter Milan) and now she is lighting up France with PSG. The problem is that it seems like she and her sister are the only good female footballers from Malawi.

Till today Chief Segun Odegbami (MON) often talks about coming second to Jean Manga-Onguéné.

Meanwhile, one of the stars of the Cameroonian women's team (a person that has often been in the top three in the CAF awards) is Gabrielle Aboudi Onguene. People always assume that she is Jean Manga-Onguéné's daughter, but they are not related.

Laurent Pokou, who appears in the 1970 and 1973 editions, was the highest goalscorer in Nations Cup history. Rashidi Yekini needed only one goal to equal his record and I was sure that he would beat the record at the 1996 edition, but Nigeria withdrew from the tournament. It was very frustrating.

Rabah Madjer was an obvious choice for the 1987 edition. He scored a crazy back-heeled goal in the final of the European Cup to enable Porto equalise with Bayern Munich (1-1). Porto went on to win the match with a 2-1 scoreline.

Abedi belonged to a different class of players. He could single handedly change or win a game! The videos of his games when he was at Marseille are something this generation should watch and see pure magic!
