For the first time since 2004-05, neither Lionel Messi nor Cristiano Ronaldo will see their teams involved in the Champions League quarter-finals.

Messi and Barcelona were eliminated at the last-16 stage by PSG, who drew 1-1 against the Spanish side on Wednesday to seal a 5-2 aggregate triumph.

The day before, Porto stunned Juventus and Ronaldo, advancing after a thrilling extra-time battle in the second leg in Turin.

What happened in 2004-05?
The last time both superstars missed the last eight of the competition, Messi and Barcelona were eliminated by Chelsea in the last 16.

Ronaldo, meanwhile, was with Manchester United at the time, with the Red Devils also going out in the round of 16 against AC Milan.

Overall, Ronaldo has won the Champions League five times, while Messi has won the competition on four occasions – most recently in 2014-15.

Barcelona end 13-year quarter finals streak
In addition to both players ending a long streak of reaching the quarter-finals of the Champions League, Barcelona also saw a long stretch of reaching the last eight come to an end on Wednesday.

With their elimination at the hands of PSG, Barcelona failed to reach the Champions League quarter-finals for the first time since 2006-07, when they were eliminated by Liverpool in the last 16.

The Blaugrana were on a run of 13 consecutive quarter-final appearances, the longest such streak in the competition’s history.

End of an era?
With Messi at age 33 and Ronaldo now 36, there has been plenty of speculation that the era of both players dominating the European scene has ended.

This season's Champions League has seen two players, in particular, emerge as potential successors to the dominating duo.

Kylian Mbappe, whose PSG side defeated Barca, scored four goals over the two-leg tie, breaking Messi's record as the youngest player to reach 25 Champions League goals in the process.

Erling Haaland also scored four goals in Dortmund's last-16 tie against Sevilla, with the 20-year-old phenom becoming the youngest player to reach 20 Champions League goals.

you can say its d end of an era but I still think dey both have 3-4yrs to play European football bcoz i haven't seen any other player for now dt is ready to chase these aliens off the stage..
even at such age their clubs are still over depending on them and they are still giving opponents n goalkeepers sleepless nites...

watch Ronaldo's sister come and say that he's a victim of circumstance, which by the way is true. But at least he shouldn't have backed the ball.

To be candid, Messi and CR7's consistency at the top top level since 2007-2008 has been staggering. Since that time, only Arjen Robben, Lewandoski, and Luis Suarez have had a semblance of top-level consistency for a lengthy time but it's still far from that of Messi and CR7. Prior to Messi - CR7 era, it was an outstanding feat for the best attackers to be in their prime for 6 - 8 years i.e Ronaldo De Lima, Henry, Eto'o, Owen, Raul, Shevchenko etc. Both players are truly a special exclusive breed of footballers in the current generation.

But moving on from the collabo talk up there, currently, Messi is still way ahead of CR7 as a player. The stark difference was laid to bare over the 2 legs of the UCL second round ties for both players.

Of all the teams available to go he chose Juventus all in the name of taking up challenge to shame Messi..

I don't see how Messi would go to any of the top european league and not win the league and score goals..

Jumping ship is not the same as taking challenge

But Ronaldo performance against ajax and lyon floored messi's performance against PSG.... he only shined in one half in 4 halves and still spoilt the one half with a penalty miss ... besides...Ronaldo had always been eliminated on away goals rule...but messi keeps on being disgraced... 5.2 for goodness sake and u talking about his performance....mbappe totally annihilated him and barca over the 2 legs... haba , how can they eliminate u 8.2, 5.2 back to back and u talking about his performance... what performance?? Where was he when they loaded them 4.1... he had a terrible campaign this year to b honest...way below expectations... 5 goals of which 4 whr penalties... so remove the penalties and he wud hv only 1 goal, a consolation...

Balderdash. Please compare like with like, what they both delivered at the same time of their matches since Ronaldo went to Juve.

Compare Ronaldo's performance against Ajax with Messi's performance against Man Utd
Compare Ronaldo vs Lyon with Messi vs Napoli
Compare Ronaldo vs 10-man Porto with Messi vs PSG

The superiority of Messi's overall individual performance in the above match-ups is unquestionable, except of course for those who are ignoramuses in football.

Ronaldo is 36 for goodness sake...u guys are not considering the age difference...compare their performance when he was messi's age ... besides, he join a Conservative team... have u ever heard that juve scored 5 goals in a match , they havnt done that in many years.. even 4 goals is an uphill task... they are not an attacking side ... despite winning the scudettos consecutively for 9 years...and i don't think they ever had a player in their winning team win serie a top scorer

Oga stop these terrible lies abeg. Ronaldo at 33 was at Juventus nd was eliminated by Ajax. At age 33 a 36yrs old Fabio Quagliarella outclassed nd outshined him in becoming d top scorer in serie a. Abi u dey suffer from amnesia?

Hmm, almost a fair point from you, but then I remember that when the comparison started in 2007 and a prime Ronaldo initially had the edge, no one put up a defence of Messi saying he was 2 and a half years younger and therefore still immature. In the Man U vs Barca matches, the comparisons were straight head-on between the two with no regards for age (Messi was 19 and Ronaldo was 22). It is therefore inevitable that the same narrative would be maintained throughout and any attempt to shift goalposts resisted!

Are people still not also comparing Ibrahimovic and Ronaldo in the Serie A despite Zlatan being 3 years older?

Comparison is best done at the same time they played the matches. Why will I be comparing someone's performance in 2018 with another's performance in 2021? Is it Messi's fault that he dragged his team to qualification when Ronaldo was being eliminated? Or you think if he had not scored all those goals or assisted against Man Utd and Napoli, Barca would have qualified?

Immediately after CR vs Atletico game, Messi himself had a super game against Lyon where he delivered 2 goals and 2 assists to put Barca through the tie. Without that input Barca would have been eliminated as well.
