Two thousand years ago, 967 Jewish men, women, and children reportedly chose to take their own lives rather than suffer enslavement or death at the hands of the Roman army. They were the last holdouts of the First Jewish Revolt against Rome, which had ended officially three years earlier, in 70 CE, with an unimaginable disaster: the destruction of Jerusalem and the Second Temple. During the revolt, these families found refuge atop Masada, a remote mountain overlooking the Dead Sea that had been fortified by King Herod the Great seventy years earlier. Now, however, they were besieged by an overwhelming Roman force, and it was clear the fortress would fall. At this critical moment, the rebel leader Eleazar Ben-Yair gathered the men together and convinced them to commit mass suicide. So persuaded, each man killed his own wife and children. Then the men gathered together and drew lots, determining which ten of them would put the others to death. The ten remaining men drew lots again, and one man killed the other nine before taking his own life, as the ancient Jewish historian Flavius Josephus describes:

The geo-politics of Yemen is very complex, i wonder how the country can be reunified...will the others submit to the houthis? What is the UAE long term game plan in the south?
I am very keen on seeing what happens in Yemen going forward

Crates of Thebes was a Cynic philosopher, who gave away his money to live a life of poverty on the streets of Athens.

He married Hipparchia of Maroneia, who also shared his views on materialism.

Respected by the people of Athens, he is remembered for being the teacher of Zeno of Citium, the founder of Stoicism.

Penthesilea, Queen of the Amazons.

She fought Achilles to the death. At the moment of her defeat, they fell in love.
Penthesilea (Greek: Πενθεσίλεια, romanized: Penthesíleia) was an Amazonian queen in Greek mythology, the daughter of Ares and Otrera and the sister of Hippolyta, Antiope and Melanippe. She assisted Troy in the Trojan War, during which she was killed by Achilles or Neoptolemus. The asteroid 271 Penthesilea, discovered in 1887, was named in her honor.[1]

🔸This incredible photograph from 1885 AD, of Anandibai Joshi of India, Keiko Okami of Japan, and Sabat Islambouli of Syria, who each became the first licensed female doctors in their respective countries. The three were students at the Woman’s Medical College of Pennsylvania; one of the only places in the world at the time where women could study medicine.

As Mallika Rao writes in HuffPost, "If the timing doesn't seem quite right, that's understandable. In 1885 AD, women in the U.S. still couldn't vote, nor were they encouraged to learn very much. Popular wisdom decreed that studying was a threat to motherhood." Given this, how did three women from around the world end up studying there to become doctors? The credit, according to Christopher Woolf of PRI's The World, goes to the Quakers who "believed in women’s rights enough to set up the WMCP way back in 1850 in Germantown.”

Woolf added, "It was the first women’s medical college in the world, and immediately began attracting foreign students unable to study medicine in their home countries. First they came from elsewhere in North America and Europe, and then from further afield. Women, like Joshi in India and Keiko Okami in Japan, heard about WMCP, and defied expectations of society and family to travel independently to America to apply, then figure out how to pay for their tuition and board. Besides the international students, it also produced the nation’s first Native American woman doctor, Susan La Flesche, while African Americans were often students as well. Some of whom, like Eliza Grier, were former slaves."

🔸A 3,300-year-old chariot bridge is still in use today. The Arkadiko Bridge was built between 1,300 and 1,190 BCE, making it one of the oldest still-used arch bridges still in existence even though it’s not suggested to drive on. It was built on a road that linked Tiryns to Epidaurus, and was part of a larger military road system.
