Seun, we don’t need a block button for those monitoring offensive posts , it will only enable tribal bigots post and hide from those monitoring their offense posts, a block button will enable a user to tell a lie about another user and then block the user from seeing , report or replying to post.

I also think it’s the simplicity of nairaland that made it flourish , very easy to use , it’s not heavy and so it doesn’t use much data to load pages and this is what made it possible for this platform to accommodate everyone from every social class irrespective of their financial capacity compared to instagram that will finish your data fast

What I think is you can have a app version or mobile version designed in a different way for those requesting for design change , I don’t know if that’s possible though .

As for the trolls, I’ve been able to liberate my self from them by converting them to wailer-Adsense by trying to take advantage of their trolling with positive response that promote my image here, so they are just like google Adsense to me now, they have made me very popular.

One of the most important thing that need attention is how to eliminate some scammers post that promote porn , betting in the comment sections and I think I’ve noticed improvement in that area recently .

You can also evaluate and compare the level of tribalism on this platform with that of other platforms like twitter or Facebook to gauge how well you are doing in this area, may be create a poll because people will always try to emotionally blackmail you no matter how well you try, they will still criticize your shadow

Use empathy rather than sympathy

We are all victims of racism and tribalism
Racism on the global level and tribalism at the national level , I agreed it should be fought to the bearable minimum

Lastly beware of gangs , groups from WhatsApp groups with their own agendas trying to influence decisions here to achieve their principals goals , these people are hired.
I was once a victim of such WhatsApp group in the past, they planned everything there and came for who they want to come for on this forum , a nairaland clearance sales WhatsApp group , one of them later met me in person during a transaction and told me they will add me to the WhatsApp group but I rejected the offer , so take note of this too

Thanks
We wish you well as you work to elevate this forum to higher level .

You should also vet some usernames, as some are nasty and could be inciting. E.g
Seunosewapenis
Thhiefnubu
Obidunce
Yorubasaremad
IgbosAreslave
How about the slangs? For context, if I say 'ronu' or 'shukudi' it is derogatory and is likely to trigger a similar response. How would your mods arrest these situations? Censoring a few words did not help as these people are always a step ahead.

I think such usernames already made made things easy for the moderators, will make it easy to identify the wolves as such moniker users already cast themselves by reflecting their inner mind at first sight, he should just be gifting them weekly whenever he feel like.

Good one here.
May God help you to achieve them.

However, something bothers me about Nairaland.

On a Muslim thread, to make any form of comment, you need to confirm you are a Muslim, but on a Christian thread, it's not the same, even a traditionalist can freely make comments.

Where is the place of fairness and equity.
What Is good for the goose should also be good for the gander.

Do something about this selective act.
It doesn't portray Fairness that we preach here.

Or let me ask, what is your intention in putting up such restrictions in Muslim threads.

Ire oh.

Not surprised one bit.

I implore Seun to ignore this one who once called pastors Mafia. Are you saying that dude is Gbawe? Mr-My-Epistle-Does-Not-Make-Sense? shocked

If as a minister, that means na Keyamo be that who celebrated like he won a lottery after buying a property in the US. Typical Nigerian elite.

I already observed how his busy hours (travels, court sessions etc) always coincide with the disappearance of the moniker on nairaland long before I let him know. His epistologies gave him out as uncle Gbawe of old.

He is obviously a lawyer and it shows in his presentation of arguments.

Include a block button, I made this suggestion to you around 2019, but you seem reluctant to do that. The major thing keeping me on this forum is the Express Entry thread and its other related thread (like the TEF thread). Once I have collected ITA and I am cleared to immigrate to Canada this year, I won't be on this forum except you include a block button... I prefer to block tribalists, trolls and annoying forum posters myself rather than wait for you or you moderators. Their comments would still be visible to others, however I would never be able to see them, if I were to block their accounts.
Blocking has the tendency to be not favorable for business. Even Elon Musk is trying to remove it from Twitter.

Seun:

There are other ways to do it without blocking. If you put a block button, it will affect your business. Depending on how you want to do it, an option is that you allow users to rank posts. You will do less work on home page hijackers too...and naturally, intelligent posts will be upgraded to the front page. Then, you configure the algorithm so that when a user has posts downgraded, you limit such an account. Users can downgrade trolls and abusers too.

See...I abuse people who insult me first here also. But if you have such...I don't need to retaliate, I will just press the button to move down the post. I will share it also so that all my followers can descend on such a post. By the time the person gets such treatment, things will be ok.

This method has its downside too cos haters will deliberately injure many accounts. grin So, you may need to create a section for appeal for anyone whose account has been destroyed so that a mod can investigate it.

Your success is all about who you employ and how they respond. Shikena. I have had an encounter with you and your mods. I know some of them who I would sack if I were you. Also, mods should be paid very well...and that is why you should create a means to generate more income to pay them well. Not saying there should not be volunteers, but you will need mods that are paid well sir. As in good pay. Not just mods...but backend workers too.

I have changed my account like 6 times....we used to be friends sef...but see...the love I have for Nigeria is why I am doing this. At a stage, I wanted to see if I could start something, but I didn't have the time. My focus is on something else.

Good luck sir

This is pure lie, unless you're not aware.

U should remember a certain individual here who always cancel SELECTED members' comments here before you disallowed cancellation eventually.

He's also a bully, he bully those who are political rivals to him. He bullied Hungerbad till death on this forum.

He has been doing this since 2014 till this moment I type.
He has hundreds of monikers he's using.

Omenkata Cursedabiola Fatimaabubakar Asampetenwaanyi Isaabubakar bloodykiller are some of his old monikers.

Prigidypogodo is one of his recent moniker. He has always wanted to be moderator

Till today he's still bullying members here and nothing done yet to him.

Special appreciation to the CEO of Nairaland, for this wonderful platform for edutainment and dissemination of information, kudos to the Nairaland team for onerous of purpose and to the fans of Nairaland, Happy New Year to us all.

I have a useful suggestion for this platform, we can achieve a lot with the current advancement in technology. I will like to share my thoughts privately with the management of Nairaland.

Once again, Happy New Year to this wonderful family.

People use blocking to get rid of online harassment and trolls on other social media, if Elon Musk removes, he will lose millions of users because it means that someone can keep throwing insults at you, while you keep waiting for a moderator to intervene.

Fellow Nairalanders,

I'm pleased to wish you a Happy New Year!!

2024 will be the year of Nairaland's resurgence. I will face Nairaland squarely like I used to before the discouraging Data Loss Incident of 2014. I will hire more hands to help us to improve Nairaland.

The problems of Nairaland that we should have solved years ago will be solved.

* We will defeat tribalists, trolls, & spammers.
* We will complete our advertising platform.
* We will improve the UI and UX.
* Home page topics will be educative & fresh.
* We will reverse the anti-women trends.

However, I must warn you that things will get worse before they get better. Please stand with us and fight for us as Nairaland faces the tough challenges of 2024, which have already started.

Happy New Year and thanks for using Nairaland!

Seun Osewa,
Nairaland's Founder.

I would say do not introduce any breaking change to the UI of the site. A lot of those clamouring for a redesign just want to see something new, not that the present one is not working. You may introduce some fine-tuning here and there, but keep it simple.

I like the dislike button on reddit, perhaps we could have something like that here. Shelve the block button idea for now.

How do you know he will lose millions of users? Cos you think so? What are your parameters for saying that? Oh...Twitter cannot be monetized cos the way it was built...if Elon tries it...it will collapse. Has it collapsed after monetizing it? Oh...he is a slave to advertisers, he must worship them.... The last time he said no to them and cut them off...has he gone out of business finally? Dey play. Show me that removing the block button has made any social media platform crash. Which one?

because it means that someone can keep throwing insults at you, while you keep waiting for a moderator to intervene.
Go back and read my post and I gave another option..That should be looked into also...did you consider the option I have given there? Or you don't even bother to read it but just cos you think blocking is the solution? Give other people's opinions a chance too. It is not what you think will work that always work. Most Nigerians don't even know about topics they engage in arguments....they hear many saying something will work...and they automatically start promoting it without knowing themselves if such will work.

Blocking hinders social media businesses and most platforms are looking for a way to avoid it without violating rules. Though some regulatory bodies mandate it, it is not the only way out. Personally, if I were the owner, it would be the last option I would use after trying others.

Did you even read my previous post? I guess you don't still understand what I wrote there...cos if you do....you won't return with this.

Good luck!

How do you know that it is very easy for his developers to remove it? Keep making baseless assumptions. grin Oga, I don't know exactly the reason, but I know that regulations in the US require some of these platforms to include the block button. So, perhaps the application for removal is not yet complete. I don't know and you don't know. I don't want to make any assumptions, but most app owners say the same thing...blocking is bad for the business...and there are other ways they want to explore. The question is that...have they been able to prove beyond reasonable doubt that some of the other options are better?

Again, you have refused to read the proposal I gave. You only want to push your own. This is the part I hate about uninformed Nigerians. By the way, are you a developer to say with an affirmative tone that it is easy for his developers or not? Na waoooo!

You need to be able to block people like me because you don't agree with me. Yet, I haven't in any way insulted you.

Seun...follow the conversation btw this guy and myself and see that he is all about his own will. Seun, I don't agree with all your tactics, but I am a businessman who considers owners cos I know how it feels. Listen, bro, if you listen to these people and just do what they want, you may regret it. Test everything you want to implement very well on a smaller group in the whole population of NL and see if it works. Do not bow to pressure from people who only want their will. Most of these people will promote their agenda and there won't be any balance and check. Yes, social media is for reading pros and cons....advantages and disadvantages. This particular guy will only want his inner "will" done. It is not healthy. Someone like me should not be deprived of the right to challenge him. What we don't want is ethical and religious intolerance. Yes...we can even share our opinions about our religion. I should be able to tell Muslims that killing for their gods is rubbish (not that their god is rubbish...but killing humans for its sake is rubbish). It is my right. They have to defend their stand logically and not with violence also. And Christians should be challenged too that their pastors are thieves if therr are evidences they are. And if they want to promote killing people or violence, the social media should be able to track them down and make goverment arrest such peoppe. Of course, only a demon will promote killing another fellow because of his god. Therefore, beware of what you use.

Nigeria is a delicate region. Someone like this should not be allowed to have his way. Nope. He needs to be continuously checked because he will want to use social media to promote his dangerous will. His will must be checked well before being accepted. Anyone who does not want anyone to check his will is dangerous to society.
