The Federal Government has taken a bold step to suspend the evaluation and accreditation of degree certificates from Benin and Togo Republics. This decision comes in the wake of an undercover report by the DAILY NIGERIAN, revealing how these degrees are obtained swiftly and without merit.

The government expressed deep concern over the unscrupulous methods employed by some Nigerians to obtain degrees, aiming to secure job opportunities for which they are not qualified. The Ministry of Education, in a statement signed by Augustina Obilor-Duru, on behalf of the director Press and Public Relations, highlighted the grave implications of this issue.

The suspension is in place pending the outcome of a thorough investigation involving the Ministries of Foreign Affairs and Education, as well as the State Security Service (SSS) and the National Youths Service Corps (NYSC) from both countries. The Ministry of Education has also initiated internal administrative processes to ascertain the culpability of its staff, with the promise of applying applicable Public Service Rules.

The government is urging Nigerians to cooperate with the committee and provide valuable information to address the problem of obtaining substandard foreign certificates. It reiterated the global challenge of degree mill institutions and its commitment to sanitizing the education sector, emphasizing inclusivity and the cultivation of various skill sets.

Furthermore, the Ministry assured the public of its dedication to collaborating with stakeholders, including civil society organizations, to enhance the Nigerian education system. It emphasized the need for patience and understanding as it works to tackle these pressing issues. This stance positions the Federal Ministry of Education as a resolute force in upholding educational integrity in Nigeria.
