“Lawyers come to police stations every day without issues. He was different. He acted without decorum,” Hundeyin added.

So because he was alleged to had acted without decorum that's why they arrested him since 30th December?

This country doesn't fail to disappoint.
I was about commenting before I saw this. This is my mind. And it's enough to prove that the police officers were guilty.
So they decided to punish him because he couldn't comport himself, locking him up for two days.

Why were they trying to involve higher authorities like the area commandant, if not trying to arrogantly cajole him (the Nigerian police way) to drop the case.

In a country where bail is free but your freedom is negotiable, the police are no different from kidnappers. cool

My take in this story when the IPO requested 30k and the Lawyer said 5k and the client was saying 10k. If the Lawyer had listen to the Client they would have left the Station. I Fear person wey no fear Police.

Ensure CCTV cameras are installed in all police stations.

Ensure only security personnel with body cams are authorised to carry out stop and searches.

Ensure that any raid by security operatives is recorded.

Until we institute genuine measures to curb abuse of power by security personnel, things will only get worse.

Honestly, I don't want to have anything to do with naija police! It's safer to avoid them because I'm sure telling lies and making up stories to implicate people is a core course in the naija police college and training schools

Honestly. I get angry whenever I see them approach me. I am not lying . Whenever I am close to them, my mood will change . Maybe it's ptsd or just what they ooze. Worse is being in the station. Dealing with a policeman isn't always straightforward.

A police man can do and overdo

I have lost count of events like this. If you're a lawyer in Nigeria, avoid any case that will make you have any encounter with any of our security outfits. This is because, despite this current lawyer's predicament, I'm hoping, but I don't see him getting any kind of compensation or justice. I have followed countless cases in this country involving our security apparatus and civilians, where the court will give judgement that the police, military, etc should pay certain sums to the victim. I'm not condoning bad behaviour but these guys won't pay and nothing will happen! Even in this particular case, I can bet nothing will happen to the DPO or area commander. In worst case, they get transferred to another division or state.

People like this lawyer should start living in the real world. It is enough irony that you choose to be a lawyer in a country like Nigeria. Forget about all the bullshit you might have been brainwashed with in the law school about welding any kind of power or influence. If you must practice law in Nigeria, make sure it doesn't involve the guys with the gun or means or both.

Here we go again. Now, for those of you that love your One Nigeria, tell me if these are NOT animal behaviors. First off, breach of a contract is NEVER a criminal matter but rather a civil issue. Can someone tell me how the police got involved? It comes down to the fact that Nigerian police men and women are NOT educated enough to know their roles in a civilized society, oops, I mean in an animal kingdom. Second of all, an attorney has every right to meet with his client in private (attorney-client privilege) without the listening ears of any police officer in a sane society. So, it was illegal to arrest and detain the lawyer as well as his client. The problem with Nigeria is its mere existence in the first place!

Nigerian civil servants and Nigerian police have the same mode of operations using different weapons. God help you that your file needs to pass through them for you to live, you will pay through your nose just as you will pay police. Infact I prefer to deal with a police mam than a typical Nigerian civil servant.

Some of these lawyers think they can just walk in to the police station and misbehave just because you are a lawyer.somebody gave you money to do job for her, and did a bad work for her after collecting money and a lawyer said is a civil matter.why did the lawyer write undertaking for a case he refer to as civil?
