Osogbo — The Osun State government has appealed to the Academic Staff Union of Polytechnics and the Non-Academic Staff Union in the state-owned polytechnics and colleges of education to end their four-month-old strike.

The state's Commissioner for Information and Strategy, Mr. Sunday Akere yesterday said the government had approved 75 percent of their demands.

He said, "Part of what the government did was relieving the schools of the burden of augmenting monthly salaries of their staff with N9 million each which was the practice in the past. With this, each institution will have extra N108 million yearly which it can deploy to develop its facilities".

The commissioner therefore appealed the workers to call off the strike in the interest of the future of the students.

But ASUP Secretary, Osun State Polytechnic Iree chapter Deji Alabi said the strike would continue until the government meets all the demands.

The striking workers in the Osun State Polytechnic, Iree; Osun State College of Technology, Esa-Oke; the state college of education, Ilesa and Ila-Orangun are demanding, among other things, the implementation of the Consolidated New Tertiary Institution Salary Structure (CONHENS), enhanced welfare and 65 year retirement age for lecturers.
