The Federal Government of Nigeria has put an end to the study of the Higher National Diploma (HND) Computer Science across all the technical institutions operating in the country. This is to encourage diversification into the world of Computer Science and allow the country's graduates to access the wide space of the field.

The stoppage of the study of HND Computer Science across HND Awarding institutions in Nigeria is contained in a letter obtainable by The Round Table which was dated January 8th, 2024, and duly signed by Prof. Idris M. Bugaje, Executive Secretary, National Board for Technical Education, Federal Republic of Nigeria. The letter was addressed to the Director General, National Youths Service Corp (NYSC) while the Director General, Industrial Training Fund (ITF) and all Rectors, Provosts and Head of Polytechnics, Monotechnics, and all similar technical institutions were copied.

With this development, no HND Awarding institutions will be allowed to admit a new set of students to study Computer Science from the 2024/2025 Academic Session as the board projects to ease out the study of HND Computer Science by 2025.

Meanwhile, students who might have wanted to study computer science at the HND level can now choose from any of the four specialized areas floated from the former "Computer Science" discipline.

The four newly floated areas of specialization floated from Computer Science include HND Artificial Intelligence, HND Networking and Cloud Computing, HND Software and Web Development, and HND Cybersecurity and Data Protection.

What about the conversion of HND to BSc/Btech?

Computer Science has broaden due to the advancement of Information technology.
perhaps, in the future, there will be faculty of Computer science or Information technology with departments like data science/analytics, cybersecurity, ai/machine learning, app/web development, ui/ux, etc

This is a good development, but I just hope the practical aspect of these courses are top notch instead of theory-based knowledge they keep pouring on students.

The polytechnics and technical colleges have derailed so much they think they are competing with BSc.
While I consider it better to give graduates a sense of direction into newer, hotter, narrow fields of CS they can realistically practice, more can still be done.

Computer and elect-elect engineering is another bastardized program in the HND space. PC technicians are even equating their ability to troubleshoot PCs to full fledged computer engineering and will gladly shame CE or EE graduates with their ability to use gmail or identify a bad RAM or install an OS.

My problem is how are they going to get lecturers , these lecturers you see are theorical, those guy that are good at these courses would not like to take up this Job... Non of this polytechnic lecturers or University lecturers in Nigeria can write html which is hypertext mark language... God help us.

Still better than generic CS where they end up not knowing even the branches of CS talkless of specializing in any.

If you observe IT courses offered around the world, you will notice they tend to have attachment to some BSc programs and always have about 4-6 levels of specialization.
Beginners/Associate
Intermediate/Professional
Advanced
Expert
Architect.

Cisco for example will offer
CCNA(Associate)
CCNP(Professional)
CCIE(Expert)
And then Architect level tasks mostly for experienced professionals.

At Google, starting salary for AI engineers is 1 million DOLLARS.

If they are not just teaching them definitions but they are really expert, such graduates wouldn't be unemployed for long.

All curriculum needs to be unbundled and entrepreneurship should be the foci point instead of the senseless curriculum.

I believe they would arrange for resource persons to take it, all this they already know. So very soon advertisement for lecturers for those positions would be up. You don't expect them to use those outdated lecturers for these new courses.

In fact, Polytechnic educations should be scrapped across Nigeria, or their applications clearly stated.

There's no need wasting the students' precious time in Polytechnics when their certificates would be subjected to ridicule after graduation.

The whole educational system of this country need to be overhaul, from primary down to the tertiary institution.

Though, this is a way to go but it should never be what we should applaud.
