Obasanjo's shame: 13 States including entire Eastern Nigeria in darkness as power cut is expected to last two weeks

The Nigerian Electricity Power Authority (Nepa) says 13 states, including the entire eastern part of the country, may be without electricity for two weeks after what it calls an attack by vandals on a vital transmission line.

Tens of millions of people in eastern Nigeria have been without electricity since Monday night.

Nigeria's Government has struggled to improve the country's notoriously inefficient electricity network since coming to power two years ago.

Nigerians are well accustomed to power cuts but rarely on such a devastating scale.

The huge area affected by this latest blackout includes some of Nigeria's largest and economically most important cities.

Struggling industries and public services, as well as private households, are already experiencing enormous inconvenience and discomfort.

Sabotage

A Nepa official told the BBC that a tower on a vital power line serving the east had been attacked by vandals and that it may take two weeks to repair.

Power lines in Nigeria are often sabotaged by gangs working for scrap metal traders, although in this instance one Nepa official is quoted as saying that no pieces had been removed from the damaged tower.
Last year an angry President Olusegun Obasanjo took direct charge of Nepa, accusing it of notorious and endemic corruption.

President Obasanjo has pledged to to increase output to a constant 4,000 megawatts by the end of this year.

But even if Nigeria attains this target, it will be producing one-tenth as much electricity as South Africa, with about three times the population.

This is why I keep saying that the quality of Nigerians on NL give a lot of cause for concern. How can you say OBJ should be shamed for a power outage in 2001 when he came in in 1999? Do you mean that the rot in the power sector that led to that kind of situation was between 1999 and 2001? do you even know what it takes to provide power to a nation? The only major power projects that was done in Nigeria were done during Gowon and OBJ's regime in the 70s. From Shagari to Buhari to IBB to Abacha, nothing was done, The system detoriorated for around 20 years. And you say OBJ should be shamed for it in 2001. You are biased but what is worse is the way you show it. You should try and be more diplomatic and dont give yourself up too easily

As fate would permit, Obasanjo did nullify some of the power that the north was wielding. I'm disinclined at the moment to expound on how the North came to enjoy such power in the first place, but I believe people like Obasanjo played into their hands and served as enablers. However, Obasanjo faltered like many before him, in the sense that he was extremely corrupt. . .he left office as one of the wealthiest individuals in Nigeria. Nigeria has been ranked as the most corrupt country in the world.
An annual survey carried out by the Berlin-based Transparency International (TI) also grouped Angola, Cameroon, Kenya and Mozambique among the top 10 most corrupt.

The damning report was released as the Nigerian President Olusegun Obasanjo made an official visit to Britain pressing for reduction of the country's huge debts.

Obasanjo orders full force Army assault on town of Odi , Niger Delta leaving approx 500 civilians dead

After just six months of civilian rule in Nigeria President Olusegun Obasanjo has unleashed the army in the oil-producing Delta region, resulting in a massacre of the population in a small town. At the same time he instituted a shoot-to-kill policy and a police roundup of members of a militant tribalist organisation in Lagos. Both measures were clearly designed to intimidate the growing opposition to the government which is carrying out IMF-dictated policies, exacerbating the already appalling levels of poverty and unemployment.

Hundreds of troops were sent into the town of Odi in the Bayelsa state region of the Niger Delta area over the weekend of November 20-21 in response to the killing of 12 policemen the previous month, allegedly by youth protesters. The youth were from the Ijaw ethnic group—the main tribal group in Odi and one of several minority tribes in the Delta. There were reports that artillery was used, resulting in a number of deaths, and the area remained sealed off for over a week.

A group of Nigerian journalists were then allowed to visit the town together with an investigative mission from the National Assembly on Monday, November 29. Their reports present a horrifying picture. Every building in the town, which is 3 kilometres from one end to the other, was in ruins. The town contained about 25,000 inhabitants, most of whom had fled into the surrounding countryside. Roofs were burnt and walls breached with thousands of spent shells on the ground. Only four buildings, including a church, a bank and a school, were left standing.

Ignorance has laid a bed for some of you. Now you are sleep talking. It's until when the man who holds a Doctorate degree and is in partnership with SHELLS Manufacturing n co, tells you it is illegal to own or drive until you are 30, tells you that you must pass through toll gates at least 6 times a week, you must repaint your car every year and also renew all its documents including the police report. Maybe that's when your lips would just start singing "In the good old days", all of which is OBJ's tenure. Nevertheless, your insults are much welcomed. But before you do that,do something wise for yourself; talk with your parents or the elderly around you and ask them who they would want to lead this country. If they tell you otherwise, look at the kind of house they live in and the type of cars they drive, the phones they use. If the 1st question you asked about whom they want to lead this country gave them a lot of trouble, ask them if they could afford their present lifestyle before OBJ's regime and that what do they foresee with the present LUCK administration. (hopefully, they are not thieves in ministerial offices and the likes, if so, you can go ahead with the insult, we all understand your predicament is an inherited one.)

Obasanjo raids and searches Thisday newspaper offices, after it investigates corrupt practices

Police in Nigeria have burst into the offices of one of the country's main newspapers, searched it for subversive documents and tried to arrest the editor.

The paper, Thisday, said it suspected the search was related to its investigation into alleged corrupt practices by senior aides to President Obasanjo.

Correspondents say the forced closure of newspapers and arrest of journalists was common during the government of the late Sani Abacha, but it's the first such police action since Mr Obasanjo came to power last year.

Obasanjo appoints National Security Advisor with close connections to Babangida, and  prepares to impose austerity measures including devaluation of Naira.

Obasanjo has appointed Aliyu Mohammed, a retired general from the north of Nigeria, as his national security advisor. He has close connections with former military dictator Ibrahim Babangida, who played an important behind-the-scenes role in Obasanjo's election campaign. Joseph Sanusi, the managing director of one of Nigeria's largest commercial banks, has been appointed to head the Central Bank. While maintaining control of the oil portfolio himself, Obasanjo has appointed the outgoing secretary of OPEC, Rilwanu Lukman, to act as his special advisor.

Plans have been made to review the 1999 budget inherited from the former military government. Obasanjo has had discussions with the International Monetary Fund and has promised to rationalise “bloated national institutions”, meaning that he must make substantial cuts. Federal and ministerial tender boards are to be revived and given wider powers to assess all contracts in order to encourage competitiveness and cut out the so-called “Nigerian factor” (backhanders), which can add 50 percent to the cost of contracts. An anti-corruption bill is to be brought before the National Assembly before the end of June.

The previous military government had made an agreement with the IMF to address the country's outstanding international debts. Two-thirds of this external debt is owed to the Paris Club of official creditors. This amounts to $16 billion, of which $5 billion is owed to Britain. The IMF had agreed to loan $3 billion in February of this year, on the basis of a Nigerian pledge to push through privatisation plans and maintain interest payments on foreign debts.

IMF head Michel Camdessus went to Nigeria in March to see what progress had been made in implementing these demands. IMF officials are due to return to Nigeria in July to discuss the proposed loans and a two-month delay is expected. The IMF wants the new government to accept certain criteria, including a permanent monitoring mission at the ministry of finance and the central bank, and independent audits of the state-owned bank and the Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation, which is also state-owned.

Nigeria faces enormous economic and social problems, despite being the world's sixth largest oil exporting country. Under the impact of the collapse of oil prices and years of military rule, it has become the world's thirteenth poorest nation.

With due sense of objectivity, Obasanjo will always earn my respect. He has good and clean record, free of corruption and nobody has never tried developing our economy like he did. Those who do not understand economic key performance indicators do relegate him.
How much was Obasanjo worth in 1999 before he became president?
So where did he get the money to buy 200million units of Transcorps's shares - he admitted this and talked about blind trust
And they were concessioning/selling key public assets to the same Transcorp (remember NItel?)
He started making $250,00 monthly from his farms. What happened? Where did he get the money to revamp it? Salary?
Where did he get the money he used to but jeep for his gf. You remember the cheque Atiku published when he went to town on Atiku?
Obj directed that work should begin on Abuja stadium without budgetary/legislative approval. Why the hurry? A Stadium?
He imposed Yaradua on us, a man who would not have passed medical test to join Obasanjo farms
Obasanjo has ruled the longest in Nigeria
It took 2 air crashes for Obasanjo to fish out and address a (by then 1-year old) letter intimating him of aviation sector problems

Crude and controversial his ways and idiosyncrasies might be to some; his patriotic love, vision, unity and the achievement of greater things for our beloved country Nigeria is unwavering.

@original poster,
can u just listen to urself? if you describe obasanjo with the words above and still call him the greatest, it is another way of saying we have no one. a popular armed robber(Annini) was said to be sharing stolen money to the public those days. is that not patrotism. shina rambo another international armed robber was only target big cars which he was moving out of the country-is that not vission? the military govts did not divide nigeria even with all their powers, is that not unity? talking about great things, we are seriously embarrassed with the gifts of mineral resources and in the presences of all the great things obasanjo did for us, we are one of the most backward countries in africa.
i have no problems with obasanjo but u the observer. u are talking about unity in nigeria where every region complain of marginalisation. i am an igboman, are the igbos part of this much talked about unity? does the ever presence of the Joint task force in the niger delta part of your unity programme? can we also see the boko haram madness as a unity package? can this particular greatest obasanjo walk alone in any part of this country? if yes, pls name the region or part.
read through all our national dailies and link me to one good news.
if obasanjo could not unite ogun pdp talk-less of ogun state as a whole then where is this idea of unity coming from?

Obasanjo admits huge Ota farm wealth  - he claims to be earning  N500million per year from farm

Some Nigerians feel it is unfair for Obasanjo to earn so much money when most are poor
Nigeria's President Olusegun Obasanjo has for the first time publicly declared the income from his private farm in the south-west.
A spokesman for the president said he was earning 30 million Naira ($250,000) a month from his farm in Otta.

Mr Obasanjo had made the public declaration to quell rumours that he was stealing money from the Nigerian state, the spokesman said.

Africa's major oil producer is ranked among the world's most corrupt nations.

Despite the oil wealth, the majority of the population lives on less than $1 a day.

Mixed feelings

The BBC's Nigeria editor Bilkisu Labaran Ohyoma says that the farm is massive and diverse, with various livestock including chickens, ostriches, pigs and fish, as well as crops.

The grounds also include a conference centre, where Mr Obasanjo recently hosted a regional summit on the crisis in Ivory Coast.
