There was a heated gunfire exchange, on Thursday, as the police rescued Segun Akinyemi, an Abuja resident, who was kidnapped just as he was driving out of his house.

The kidnappers were taking Akinyemi from Abuja to Kano State when the police swooped on them, according to Police Public Relations Officer in Kaduna, ASP Mansir Hassan.

He said on January 18, 2024, operatives attached to Kawo Divisional Headquarters, Kaduna, received a distress call of a kidnapping incident from Abuja.

He said they were alerted that the culprits and their victim were transiting through Kaduna.

“The Operatives, at about 0010 hours, blocked a grey Toyota Hilux van with registration number Abuja RBC 90 DC, carrying four passengers, the driver inclusive, suspected to be the vehicle conveying the kidnappers and their victim.”

“On sensing danger and in an effort to escape, one of the kidnappers fired at the Policemen, and they responded accordingly. In the resulting gun duel, the victim, a certain Segun Akinyemi of block 10, flat 2 FCDA quarters Area 3 Garki, Abuja, was rescued, and one of the kidnappers, a 28-year-old Chinaza Philip of Life Camp Abuja, was arrested,” he said.

The police said the three other suspects who escaped are being trailed, adding that the vehicle belonging to the victim, two Retay G17 model pistols, one Beretta pistol, ten 9mm P.A.K ammunitions, and five 9mm special ammunitions were recovered from the kidnappers.

He said preliminary inquiries revealed that the victim was abducted on January 17, 2024, by the kidnappers just when he was leaving his home situated at the aforementioned address.

He said the three escaped suspects were; Chidibere Nwodibo of Life Camp, Abuja, one Auwal surname unknown, and the gang leader whose identity is yet to be ascertained.

The kidnappers were transporting their victim to Kano before they were intercepted by the Police.

The Commissioner of Police Kaduna State Command, CP A.D Ali, while commending the Operatives for the brave feat, still tasked them to continuously go after criminal elements in the State.

He called on the members of the public to avail themselves of security agencies’ hotlines for any distress call requiring a prompt response.

Kudos! Let the police and other security agencies step up their game. These criminals are living among us and are not invincible.

Nowhere is safe as it now in Nigeria and this is unacceptable by the citizens. Our security network should dominate the criminals, whoever they are and wherever they may be

Judging from the name of those arrested, it is now evident that this kidnapping business is a marriage of Northern and Southern criminals.

There should be a law that will allow public execution of criminals within 7 days televised live on TV.

There should be a special court for kidnappers,
Judgement should be fast tracked and execution should be the verdict when found guilty

Kidnappers are igbo and hausa. Victim is yoruba. Also, likely a combination of Christians and Muslims.
Ah, majority ethnic groups have failed Nigeria.

They gave the full names of the Igbos but not the others. I’m suspicious.
Why should igbo be there in the first place considering they are the biggest critics of the government particularly since the rising spate of insecurity in recent weeks and extensively in the FCT?. Remember, this news was reported by dailytrust and the narratives that'd be built around it can only be imagined.

Yeah, that’s why I said something stinks with that report. They want to redirect the people’s anger, and gullible Nigerians will fall for it as they continue to be kidnapped by the real kidnappers.

Bet it with your last kobo, there is no Igbo or any other ethnicity among this particular kidnap in Abuja. I suspect the names are made up to stifle the aggression against Fulani militia banditry. To maintain national cohesion certain lies are told.

Two Southeasterners are fully named while the other names including the leader of the gang are not identified.

You see how media works?, as long as we give tribal colouration to every pressing issues, it becomes an entanglement each one would try pulling the other deep into. When you link a tribe to a tribe, would you blame them when they retaliate?

You're making a grave mistake if you're making criminality an exclusive of a particular tribe without considering the antecedents of others as well. You'd be quick to demonizing a particular stranger without realizing you're sleeping next to a close door demon.

police failed, man was just lucky, with finger prints and dna samples flying all over crime scenes in this country, most of these criminals would've been apprehended and streets cleaned out.also Nigeria does not have a system which monitors excons once they are free, you cant type in the name on their national id card and see security details about them officially forwarded by the correctional facility which detained them, why its taking Nigeria so long to put these things in place would make you question the leadership honnesty,i just hope things would take a turn for good.

See you symphatizing with kidnappers. How can they rope criminals arrested in action? Abi we no get Ibo person for police force again?

No one is roping anybody in, those guys are criminal and I wish Nigeria police can just shoot the MF at sight.

I pray they catch those that escaped soon and shoot them at sight too. I don’t know why Tinubu hasn’t reigned on the IG to implement that yet. OBJ once did that against OPC back then.

Whether Ibo or Fulani, any kidnapper caught should be shot to death.
