ONITSHA—The Catholic Archbishop of Onitsha Archdiocese and Metropolitan of Onitsha Ecclesiastical Province, His Grace, Most Rev. Valerian Okeke, and Governor Chukwuma Soludo of Anambra State were locked in a war of words yesterday over the governor’s threat to impose a fine on the Obimma family for celebrating funeral ceremonies of Ezinne Grace Obimma in a flamboyant manner.

Recall that there is an existing law against lavish burial ceremonies in Anambra State, enacted during Willie Obiano’s administration.

Soludo had at the requiem mass for Ezinne Grace Obimma, mother of the spiritual director of Holy Ghost Adoration Ministry, Uke, in Ndemili South LGA, Rev Fr Emmanuel Obimma, blamed the family, particularly Charles Obimma, who was a member of the legislature that passed the state burial law in 2019, for an over-shooting limit of burial expenses prescribed by the law.

The governor said the insignificant, low-key burial of his late father, Pa Simeon Soludo, was child’s play compared to that of the late Madam Obinna, who died at 88.

Countering the governor, flayed him for stepping into an area he had no jurisdiction, asking him to respect the boundaries or principles of separation of jurisdiction.

The cleric said: “In separation of power, you don’t make laws for the church on how to bury the dead because it’s bound to fail.

“It’s not the duty of the governor to make law on how Christian burials should be done because there are more serious things the government should do. Any law that is impossible to keep or enforce should be considered unjust.”

According to him, the church can only make laws where it has exclusive ecclesiastical powers and not for the government because they remain two separate jurisdictions.

He pointed out that the church made suggestions on how to cut expenses during burial but noted that the choice of celebrants to decide whether to spend hugely or meagrely depended on them.

Earlier, at the mass, the presiding cleric and chancellor of Onitsha Archdiocese, Rev Fr. Dr. Prudentius, Aroh, and Labour Party’s presidential candidate in the last general elections, Peter Obi, said the late Madam Obimma lived a life worthy of emulation.

In his words of appreciation, Rev Fr. Obimma, who is the founder of Holy Ghost Adoration Ministry Uke, said his mother, whose life was deeply rooted in Christ, died on All Saints Day (1st November), noting that heaven had gained a saint.

Rev. Fr. Obimma, the Parish Priest of Blessed Iwene Tansi Catholic Church in Umudioka, Dunukofia Local Council Area, hinted that Madam Obimma lived a life dedicated to the service of God and humanity.

Solido, this is your first tenure, don't fight too many battles. Otherwise, your chances for a second tenure will be jeopardized.

Soludo is just naive and politically suicidal to pick fights with traditional rulers and the Catholic Church in Anambra State. He hasn't done fantastic work in his first tenure and he is busy attacking his major support base. Him whom the gods want to kill, they first make him mad.

Wahala! This foolish governor of my state is increasingly damaging his chances of getting a second tenure. What is his business with how people conduct their burial ceremonies?
Does he think Anambra state is his home compound where he can act as he likes?
It's a foolish nza bird that would feast to his fill, and challenge his Chi to a wrestling match.

To be clear: the article mentioned that Governor Soludo didn't enact the law. The governor wanted them to abide by an existing law, which, if we are being honest, is very reasonable. I am just wondering the essence of spending a lot of money to bury people who are dead. Sometimes, with the way the so-called clergy behaves, you begin to wonder if they actually have the spirit of God in them.

These are the same people that usually give crazy terms and conditions to bereaved families before they can participate in funeral rites. Throwing a big party for dead people doesn't send them to heaven. The last time I checked: Catholics believe in praying for the dead so that God can accept their souls, not throwing a big party to impress people.

If you don't know the tradition of people or part of such settings just keep quiet. Anambra State has her own tradition of burial rites and acknowledged by all without complaints. So Soludo should face Governance and allow the state do their thing.

After all the money is not his and moreover demand u are talking is alien to them.

The dead must be accorded full respect.

Oga, rest! Who made you the mouthpiece of the people? Who told you that everyone can afford to throw an expensive party in Anambra to bury their dead? Again, Soludo didn't enact that law; he just told people to obey an existing law.

Then, the archbishop mentioned that whenever laws don't work in Nigeria, it means it's unpopular. This is a blatant lie. Laws fail in Nigeria because government officials don't enforce them.

Even Soludo - who could afford to use all state resources to bury his father - obeyed the same law. What is wrong with Black people?! Nigerians are incorrigible and need strong hands to govern them.

Likewise you.If he's doing wonderfully well, why then is he interfering with what is not supposed to be his business?
Someone who is doing wonderfully well shouldn't engage in What's not related to proper governance and development.
So shut your gutter of a month if you don't know what to say.
Am sure you are not even Igbo, not to talk of being from Anambra, and you are ranting.

Somehow it is good that they fight. The catholic contrived to monopolize political power in anambra state and push the anglicans and other denominations to the sidelines. The anglicans and others are just folding their arms to watch the whole show.
