Clever move. The Chinese are now a force to reckon with on the global scale of things. Imagine if we couldn't speak English, that would have brought it's own limitations. Language is power. Inasmuch as our ethnic dialects are less developed, its not a minus to learn new ones. That's why polygots are in hot demand. |

CockPit: I don't know who you are but this is the BEST comment I have read on Nairaland ever. I had this same discussion with my mother and we came to the conclusion we must incorporate our native languages into our educational institutions if we want to compete favorably with other nations. The top nations in the world do not use other people's language to instruct their citizens. Isn't it curious that we are using a foreign language to communicate amongst ourselves? Where is our identity? Our native religions? Where are our philosophers, authors, scientists etc? I have so much to say about this topic. How many Einsteins would we have produced if our children are learning in their native language? Even Einstein wrote all this papers in German, not English. But I doubt it will happen. We see our native languages as vernacular and not sophisticated enough. 2 Likes |

Did a project that made me tour some riverine communities years back ,,, come see where people were using same river water they bathe in and shit in, to cook and drink . To make it worse , oil debris floats on top ,,, Chai. You will wonder if they have a Governor 2 Likes |

Though it is sad this is another phase of colonialism but it's better than English and its evil Christian culture that held Nigeria down for decades since adoption. Chinese culture is better. If at least we must be colonised, Chinese is better among two evils. |

Morbeta11: Ok, they are being proactive because they are convinced they have been sold to China hence learning the language, fine but have they finished learning indigenous languages? |

member13: That is one of the reason the Asian countries are performing better in maths than the western world. Their language is visual and easier to count/represent numbers and do mental maths. There are some linguistic ambiguouties when you count/depict numbers in English Language for example, there is no linguistic relationship between the number 9 and 10 on the numbering system. None between number 19 and 20 and so on. The way the numbers are represented in the Korean or Japanese local dialect makes it easier to understand and visualize the flow of numbers making it easier to comprehend and manipulate tgerefore are naturally good at maths. There was a big research conducted in this regard and you can find more details in the book "outliers" by Malcolm Gladwell. We are more than 200million people and its a shame we do not have a fully developed language system. Swiss is about two million people and they have developed an advanced language system. 1 Like |

CockPit:We need to develop our culture and society first. We are in an era of globalization, and any culture that doesn't developed will die a natural death. Our preference for foreign languages over our native ones is subtle sign of how we see ourselves. The coming generation will rather learn English or Chinese over their mother tongue if they see that associating with speakers of these languages will open opportunities for them. Their native dialect will serve no use for them since it's natural environment can't guarantee them a future. Why do you think some Nigerians, just to school abroad, spend large amount of money of TOEFL when we can speak English fluently? That's the power of an higher society's language. |

They should also include ibo, Yoruba and Hausa in their curriculum. With this in place it will help eliminate the barrier of ethnicity that has eaten this nation. Pornography is short-term pleasure which can never provide long term happiness, but ultimately leaves its users increasingly dissatisfied. - Anon |
