Insecurity: Oyebanji Meets Service Chiefs, Seeks Strategic Intervention In Ekiti by AngelGabbyShara(m): 9:34am On Feb 02
Ekiti State Governor, Mr Biodun Oyebanji on Thursday met with the Service Chiefs in Abuja to fashion out a more strategic approach to stem the current spate of insecurity in some parts of the State.

The Governor’s meeting with the service chiefs came on the heels of recent security breaches in the state, specifically the killing of two traditional rulers in Oke-Ako area and abduction of some school pupils and their teachers in Emure Ekiti.

Governor Oyebanji, who was at the Defence Headquarters, Abuja alongside the Chairman of Ekiti caucus at the National Assembly and Senate Leader, Senator Opeyemi Bamidele, met with the Chief of Defence Staff, General Christopher Musa and the Chief of Army Staff, General Taoreed Lagbaja separately. He also met with other security chiefs.

Oyebanji, at the meetings, explained that Ekiti State had been experiencing peace for the past years, but that the peace was truncated by the security breaches that occurred some days ago.

“I need to rush here because the President spoke with me and gave certain directives that I needed to act on as soon as possible.

“What makes the Ekiti situation a bit pathetic was the dimension it took. Among the Yoruba people, the traditional rulers are next to God. When you bring down two traditional rulers at once in such a gruesome manner, it sends a very dangerous signal to the entire race”,
the Governor lamented.

He pointed out that the abduction of school children portends a dangerous dimension, adding that such had never been experienced in the state.

The Governor who exchanged ideas with the military top hierarchy, pushed for the deployment of more military personnel to the state to burst criminal hideouts, as well as provision of a Forward Operating Base to strengthen the security architecture of the state.

“If we have enough men on ground, I mean the armed forces, there is a way we can police the three senatorial districts because we have an idea of where these people are and most of the time when the Army join the local vigilante groups, they make some arrests.

“My plea to you is that if they cannot give us a Command in Ekiti State now, because I don't know the budgetary provision for that, we need a Forward Operating Base (FOB) as soon as possible. Whatever it is going to take, as a government, we will provide because announcement must be made to strengthen the security architecture of the state and give the people some respite.”

Governor Oyebanji promised the state government's support for the military to get rid of the criminals infiltrating the state.

In his remarks, the Chairman of Ekiti Caucus at the National Assembly and Senate Leader, Opeyemi Bamidele, explained that the recent situation in Ekiti demanded a military intervention and called for immediate intervention.

“The situation in Ekiti is a further wake up call to the nation and I know that two days ago, we had to discuss this issue on the floor of the Senate following our discussion with the Excellency and some other stakeholders In some other states like Plateau, Benue, Ekiti, Oyo and other places we felt it is time for us yet again to sit down with our Service Chiefs in a close door session as elected representatives of the people, to ask questions and get some briefings and clarifications and even get educated as to where things stand."

Responding to the demands, the Chief of Defence Staff, General Christopher Musa, assured the Governor that the Armed Forces would do all within its power to track down the perpetrators of the crimes that happened in Ekiti State.

Just like the Civilian Task Force(JTF) in the North, the Chief of Defence Staff said the Army was ready to work with the local security network, stressing the need to leverage on technology, establishment of State-Community Policing, introduction of animal ranches, amongst others.

“We do not have enough manpower on ground so we always have to make do with the locals. I was in the North East and we used the Civilian Joint Task Force (JTF) and they gave us lots of support. Maybe we put them on contracts and on renewal basis and we are able to monitor them if we see anyone misbehaving we remove them, this brings out the issue of community policing, it is very critical", General Musa added.

Governor Oyebanji also had closed door meetings with the Chief of Army Staff, Major General Taoreed Lagbaja at the Nigerian Army Headquarters, as well as the Inspector General of Police, Kayode Egbetokun at the Force Headquarters also in Abuja, in continuation of the discussions on the strategic intervention of the security agencies in the Ekiti matter.

The Governor said giving the assurances he got from the meetings, Ekiti State would become uninhabitable for criminals, adding that the perpetrators of crimes in the state would be fished out.

Since the death of Aketi (God rest his soul), insecurity has upped in the South West...

Other governors should take Amotekun serious the way Aketi did because the central govt doesn't care about individual security.

This kidnapping is getting out of hand...APC is just a plague to this country...worse than natural disasters...since 2015 till date we recorded more kidnappings and crime related more than we had from 1995 to 2014....but it got worse since the agboda master came on board...security of life and properties is the purpose of government..any government that fails to provide adequate security to life and property has already failed

So sorry Mr governor! You had to run to fct to secure your ppl!
The point is police is weak and there's no central command that train for tackling insurgency in the force! They rely mostly on the army!

Finally, locals when faced with these kind of situations need the support of military to be armed

Work with Fayose.

The security of Yoruba land is beyond politics.

Fayose singlehandedly tackled insecurity in Ekiti state during his tenure. So, work with him.

If need be engage the local hunters. They are the one that know the in and out of the forests in their areas.

Those service chiefs are not that reliable. What have service chiefs done about Nigeria security since all these years?

So, work with Fayose and other intelligent people in the state.

Oga, stop dancing around. Don't be a coward.

Gather hunters association, give them 50M cash for mobilisation. Buy them like 2,000 hunting dogs. Promise to give them 2M per bandit killed in the bush. You will see what will happen.

When herdsmen were being stupid in Ekiti, it was local hunters Fayose used to treat their insanity.

The division is the reason why state police is necessary. Every state is enough to be a mini country

The government wants a reduction in insecurity, but they don't want to find a solution to extreme hunger and poverty.

Insecurity would never stop. NEVER. until the poor is allowed to breathe, until they provide jobs , until the price of common amenities as food and drugs are affordable to the common man in society.

Insecurity would never stop. If they like let them allocate billions of security votes/funds to governor's and senators. Insecurity would never stop.

Inflation keeps biting harder, prices of goods keep going higher. Purchasing power keeps getting lower. While government and their officials sleep in their high tower, and have a lot of security entourage tagging along their Range Rover.

INSECURITY WOULD NEVER STOP. We all know the new business in town now. KIDNAPPING. it would never stop. As far as the poor are neglected and they can't afford their basic needs. The president keeps flying abroad for medical treatment and exclusive Private lavish excursion. But the poor keeps dying of not been able to afford medical treatment.

Alot of people are out now to avenge the loss of their loved ones caused by how the government and others in power has neglected them. So the worse days are yet to come.

STAY SAFE.

During Dr. John Kayode Fayemi's second (2nd) term in office i.e from Year 2018- 2022, Ekiti state coordinator of the Anti-Grazing Agency- Sola Durodola warned his principal (JKF) on the probability of conflicts between herders and farmers. He advised the EKSG on a headcount register of all herders in Ekiti-State when a clash happened in the year 2019 within the Ikole-Ekiti Axis.

The JKF Administration rather than heed to Sola Durodola advise suspended him from office and he was warned not to cause apprehension amongst the herders by thwarting the registration initiative.

Dr. John Kayode Fayemi was accused by Ekiti indigenes as taking the step to suspend the Ekiti State Anti-grazing Co-ord. so that he would not incur the wrath of former President Mohammad Buhari. Grapevine also claimed the former Governor received calls from the centre to temper down on the Herders registration issue to avoid unease and apprehension. Fayemi was also accused of turning a deaf ear as a result of his earlier presidential ambition.

The results are evident as the same set of people have been accused of masterminding this sacrilegious, despicable and abominable act on Yoruba soil. Never has such happened in one day where Tradition, Culture and divinity would be affronted barefaced on Ekiti soil.

The late Governor of Ondo State Aarakunrin Rotimi Akeredolu adopted a no-nonsense approach towards the Herders/ farmer issue and agitated for the strengthening of a coordinated regional security network.

The Governor of Ekiti State should note that if the executors and masterminders of this act will be apprehended it will be by the Locals and Amotekun. The Army has two checkpoints along the Ikole Route as a result of insecurity. The savannah vegetation and fallow landmass along the IPAO EKITI-IKOLE EKITI axis makes the soil attractive for herding livestock. The presence of herdsmen in that axis is higher than other regions in Ekiti State.

My candid advice for the SW Governors is to headhunt retired Military personnel with strategic capacity of handling local intelligence into Amotekun. Amotekun's security architecture fortifies of all forests and reserve areas along the six(6) core southwestern states.

Laws for a special category of Amotekun members to carry light ammunition should be enacted as they face superior firepower most times.

All the governors and president are not serious with issue of insecurity until they allow state police,or local vigilante to be backed by law.
They are just wasting the life of people
