TRUSTWORTHY FRIENDSHIP

And Jonathan made David reaffirm his vow of friendship again, for Jonathan loved David as he loved himself.

1 Samuel 20:17

Friendship built on love and commitment to one another is usually very strong. When we love people wholeheartedly we are committed to their courses and we share in their victories and sorrows.

David and Jonathan were an example of true friendship. A love bond that was sweeter than the love of women. David loved Jonathan and Jonathan likewise. Even when Jonathan was the natural heir to Saul’s throne he knew God had annointed David King in place of him and his father. Jonathan did not respond with hate or competitiveness. He understood and stood by David and made a vow of loyalty.

In a world full of betrayals and selfishness we can see the need to be selfless in love and friendships from Jonathan and David. Even in death David still loved Jonathan extending this love to Jonathan’s only child Mephiboshet who was lame.

May our love for those who we call friends be full of trustworthiness and loyalty just like David and Jonathan.

Key Point: A lasting love is built on selflessness and loyalty.

Prayer: Lord help me in my friendships to be full of love and trustworthiness.
