A Muslim media sparked mixed reactions after accusing staff at the University College Hospital (UCH) Ibadan of rejecting a sick newborn baby over the mother's refusal to remove her niqab.

Muslim News Nigeria shared a video of the encounter at the hospital.

In the video, the medics, who were wearing scrubs, are seen explaining to the parents of the newborn that no one can enter the neonatal intensive care unit (NICU) without changing into scrubs. This is to avoid the spread of infections to newborn babies.

The hospital staff also indicated that they too were wearing scrubs and explained that it is the rule to avoid the spread of infection and protect the preterm babies who are still very sensitive.

However, the father of the newborn refused to listen to their explanation and told the staff that they should have told him the rules before he made payment.

The video received mixed reactions after it was shared online.

One X user wrote: "Wallahi, I will turn that place upside down. That's a government facility not a private one."

However, many users told the Muslim Media that the safety of other babies cannot be jeopardised by one mother.

Doctors have now weighed in. They explained that long coverings like the niqab and clothes worn from outside are not allowed into the NICU.

One doctor wrote: "Are you guys serious at all?

"When I worked in the ICU as an intern, I didn't go into the ICU with my work clothes, there were scrubs and shoes kept for everyone outside, and we changed into them.

"We covered our hair and wore face masks!!!!

"These are children with very low immunity and you want to bring a “hijab” that's not sanitized into an ICU!!!

"What sort of nonsense mentality is this fgs!!!"

A health organisation known as Health Simplex wrote: "The intensive Care Unit is strictly very hygienic because the patients in an ICU, especially 'New Borns' are very vulnerable.

"The staff of the ICU are not even allowed to go into the ICU with the clothes they wore from home, why do you think a hijab would be allowed?"

With all this explanation that they are not against any religion oga is still arguing and with all his education i'm surprise he doesn't know d rules of a NICU, he should go and ask for refund because nobody will allow them access without changing into scrubs.

Well on that same IG page they have said even in the north it's not allowed.

Upon all the explanation it's for infection control and security reasons, you want them to expose other babies there lailai.

What are we even saying sef, any parent who has had a baby in NICU knows this.

The hospital where we were Father's are not allowed, we wore hospital gown, we can't wear outside shoes in. Too much rules and the nurses keep on saying their immunity is low and some of them have not been immunized.

Even if they want to do naming on the 8th day, the mother will carry the baby to a glass partition within the NICU, the pastor or alfa will stand on the other side of the glass partition outside and say the prayers.

There were 2 full hijabite women there that I know during the period our babies were admitted and they complied

These things are not negotiable abeg. The father is busy recording seeing it as an attack on his religion when even Muslim doctors and nurses know the standard.

Now since the OP is asking who is at fault, it's the mother I will partially blame, she is the one who carried and delivered the baby, she is the one who is carrying a sick child and should know how to sort the husband out.

Hospital won't bend rules for you and expose other children.
