Ukraine’s Air Force reportedly rejected a donation of Australian F/A-18 Hornet jets, with a senior official calling them ‘flying trash.’ In a report published on Tuesday, the Australian Financial Review (AFR) quoted a defense contractor who was present at the initial talks over the planes.
The Hornets had been retired from Australia’s Air Force, and a plan was floated in March 2023 to donate 41 of them to Ukraine. However, when Kiev was encouraged to take up the offer of the donation, a Ukrainian Air Force official reportedly called the planes ‘flying trash’ that Australia was trying to offload.

‘That basically killed the F/A-18 deal,’ said the defense contractor. ‘Had he not done it, they would have been flying over Ukraine now.’

Several months later, following Ukraine’s failed summer counteroffensive, the topic of the Hornets was brought up again, but Australia said the jets had now been scrapped. Kiev lost out on a similar chance to obtain Australian MRH-90 Taipan helicopters before they were scrapped, with the defense contractor telling AFR, ‘Ukraine didn’t get its request letter in on time for the Taipans. They’re not good at paperwork’
