INEC Suspends Rerun Elections in Enugu, Kano, and Akwa Ibom Constituencies Due to Disruptions and Irregularities

The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has announced the suspension of ongoing rerun elections in specific constituencies in Enugu, Kano, and Akwa Ibom States. This decision is attributed to disruptions, irregularities, and the abduction of election officials.

The affected areas include Enugu South 1 State Constituency in Enugu State, Ikono/Ini Federal Constituency in Akwa Ibom State, and Kunchi/Tsanyawa State Constituency in Kano State. INEC cited cases of thuggery, hijacking of electoral materials, and other security concerns in these regions.

Elections were suspended in Enugu South 1 Constituency due to disruptions in eight polling units where the original results sheets were not available for inspection by voters before the polls commenced. In Akwa Ibom State, elections were halted in two polling units (Village Hall, EdemUrua 003 in Ini LGA and Village Hall Mbiabong Ikot Udo 003 in Ikono LGA) where all election materials were reportedly carted away by hoodlums. For Kunchi/Tsanyawa State Constituency in Kano State, elections were suspended in all ten polling units in Kunchi LGA due to invasion, vandalization, and disruption by thugs.
INEC stated that its decision aligns with the provisions of Section 24(3) of the Electoral Act, 2022. Further necessary measures for the affected constituencies will be announced after the Commission’s meeting on Monday. INEC has invited security agencies to investigate the incidents, and the Commission commits to thoroughly interrogating any breaches involving its officials.

The ongoing bye and re-run elections involve 80 Local Government Areas (LGAs) across 26 states, aiming to fill vacancies in senatorial districts, federal and state constituencies, registration areas/wards, and polling units, with over 4.9 million registered voters(‎@NaijaAnchorNews ) #inec #nigeria #latestnewstoday #latest
