As part of efforts to strengthen security across the nooks and crannies of Ekiti State, the first deployment of Army personnel, by the Nigerian Army headquarters, arrived Ado- Ekiti, the state capital on Thursday.

The military personnel arrived Ado- Ekiti around 9’ o clock in the morning and converged on Fajuyi Pavillion, where they had a parade before departing to different locations for the commencement of their operations.

The troop was received by Brig General Ebenezer Ogundana (rtd), Special Adviser on security matters to Governor Biodun Oyebanji. He said the deployment of military personnel followed series of deliberations between the Governor and Service Chiefs in Abuja, prompted by recent violent incidents in the state, including the gruesome killing of two monarchs and the abduction of some school children and their teachers.

Gen. Ogundana, who emphasized the state's firm stance against criminal tendencies and the determination of the state government to ensure that the forests being used as hideout for criminal activities were combed and free the state of all criminal infiltrators, added that the state would leave no stone unturned in the bid to preserve lives and properties of citizens.

While urging residents to maintain calm and carry on with their daily activities without fear but, he urged them to promptly report any suspicious activities to law enforcement agencies.

Justifying Governor Oyebanji’s multifaceted approach to combating criminality, Gen Ogundana said government would continue to safeguard the lives and properties of Ekiti State citizens by all possible means, even while working hard to bring all perpetrators of the heinous crimes to book.

Welcoming the soldiers to the State, Gen Ogundana assured them of the state government's comprehensive preparation to support their mission and make their stay in the state worthwhile.

Briefing Journalists shortly after their parade, the Commander of the troop, Brig. Gen, John Lar, said the men and officers were on special mission to comb the various hideouts of criminals and bandits in their various hiding places in the forests.

Brig. Gen. Lar affirmed that the activities of the military in the state would commence immediately as he sought cooperation of residents during the military exercise in the state to enable them achieve the desired success.

He commended the Chief of Army staff, Lt. General Taoreed Lagbaja, for deploying additional troops to support and strengthen military activities in the state, adding that they were set to expose hideouts of all bandits and criminals in the state.

While stressing that the military would work all days and nights to clear the forests of infiltrators, Brig. Gen. Lar, disclosed that the military personnel would be swiftly deployed to their designated positions, emphasizing on heightened border surveillance to dismantle criminal networks operating within the forests.

A handful of military men will not solve the problem .

They need a minimum of 50,000 armed soldiers and that can only be sourced from the local population of the town .

.there is need for state police

Hehehe.

Nigeria is a funny country. We are always reactive, instead of being proactive.

All these fire brigade approach is just medicine after death. These guys have moved on.

If we can't strengthen the Nigeria Police, the DSS and Civil defense to tackle every forms of internal security challenge...we never start!

Withdraw all police personnel being used as private orderlies for the rich and replace them with civil defence...so, that we have more policemen to handle our inter security issues.

Is this how we are going to solve the insecurity challenge of this country? The issue of kidnapping is better solved through 70% intelligence and about 30% of brute force.

I think the DSS and the NSA should help us more. Even if they want to deploy soldies cant it be discreetly done?

By this announcement now every kidnapper in Ekiti will just leave Ekiti state for now. They can continue their nefarious acts on other states that are yet to get soldiers deployment.

We need state police, not these half measures. The military are being used in ways they were not intended to be used, thereby leading to clashes between civilians and other para military bodies, i tot tinubu would restructure this country, when a northerner was president, all the south we’re shouting restructuring, now a southerner is president, everywhere is quiet. Is this how we are going to build this country? Don’t do like Jonathan and plan for second term that did not materialize oo, so what you need to do now.

Unfortunately; military, police or any form of security agency deployment has never been known to improve security in any part of Nigeria. From Boko Haram to Abuja Kaduna road, to Benue to IPOB… military deployment escalates rather than quell violence and insecurity. It’s big business for some people: arms contracts, allowances, bribes, etc.

Reforming them to focus more on policing is part of ways to strengthen them.

Blacks are the funniest humans on earth, no wonder all races defeated blacks and used them for slavery. The solution is simple, not all of these. U cant be deploying military up and down as if u are in war. I mean, this is so wrong. This alone shows that something is wrong with Nigeria. Come on, Nigeria is at war with her own self. Solution is simply look into how Nigeria is structured. Decentralizing the police is the way to go while the military can remain unified. Decentralize the police down to community level is the best solution.
