A 400-Level Student Of Kwara State University, Malete, in the Moro Local Government Area of the state, identified as Rashidat Shittu, has reportedly committed suicide over her academic performance.

According to her colleagues who confided in Sunday PUNCH, the deceased committed suicide ahead of her upcoming exams by ingesting insecticide.

Shittu was said to have been pronounced dead on arrival at the University of Ilorin Teaching Hospital where she was rushed to for treatment.

It was reliably gathered that she was first taken to the school clinic before she was later referred to the teaching hospital to save her life.

Also, a staff member who was part of the medical team that attended to her at UITH but did not want her name in print said that the student was brought in dead.

“Her colleagues said she was having issues with her academic status in school. She later informed her colleagues when she started feeling the pain that she had ingested insecticide,” she said.

A resident who witnessed her Janazah at the Muslim cemetery, Osere, Ilorin, told our correspondent that the deceased was buried at the facility by family members and employees of the students affairs unit of KWASU.

When contacted, KWASU’s Director of University Relations, Dr Saeedat Aliyu, in a text message, said that she was not aware of the death of the student.

“I am not yet aware of the information on the death of any of our students. But I will find out and get back to you as soon as those who should give the information confirm it,” Aliyu said.

People should stop taking their lives because of trivial issue or something that can be amended. Taking your life because of academic failure is foolishness,, you can start all over again and make it right, it's that easy.

Parents should stop pressuring their children and wards over academic performance. It's okay to encourage and counsel them....but never make them feel like failures simply because they aren't at par with their colleagues or meeting up to your expectations. No be everybody head de fit carry find x!

Paper qualifications no longer put food on the table. With a pass degree, if you are skilled you will be fine. This is a digital age.

I don't know if they still do it, I graduated 5 yrs ago... Asking students to write 10 papers within a week can be really stressful... Some write two exams per day... So if u can't cram u r in deep trouble...and there's no E as a grade 44 is fail....

Plus sch fees for for indigenes is 110k plus other charges go dey enter like 200k, or 250k, non-indigenes pay 210k, plus other charges go dey enter like 300k or 350k... So I can understand d pressure to pass especially when you're from a poor family.

Damn! It's such a pity! This girl just wasted her precious life on what is not even worth it. How many graduates are done with courses even better than what she was studying with even first class and still roaming the streets in search of jobs? How I wished she came to the realization that school certificates does not even translates to a successful career. How I wish she understands that even the lucky graduates that are gainfully employed are still struggling to survive with the hardship of life and their salaries are barely enough to cater for their needs. How I wished she knew these things. How I wished she understands that Tunde or Musa or Emeka who is topping her class may end up as a skool teacher just for survival and the kudirat or nkiru or aminat who managed to graduate with lowest grade may end up in CBN or FIRS as a result of good connection. Parents and guardians should pls keep watch on their wards. Relate with them, encourage them to study well and again enlighten them that it's not a do or die affair to top the class.

There are so many third class and pass graduates who are professors today and are doing awesomely well for themselves. The Koko is have you given up on yourself to know and say you can never do well?
